[OLD]
The doctor looked across the table at Kaj, "Tychu is fine. He will be fit for duty tomorrow..."
[NEW]
Sam took her seat at the head of the table where her cup of carrot tea and a hot cheese croissant sat. "Lieutenant, I think the Marines are more than capable of taking care of themselves." She smiled at Damon before continuing. "Now that everyone's here, let's get started."
"First, I'd like to welcome Lieutenant Delon Tovan, our new Chief of Operations. And Commander Karma Sinclair, who may not be new to the ship, but has replaced Commander Sheridan as Executive Officer." She smiled at both men.
"Computer, first image." A holographic image of Turkana IV appeared just above the center of the table. "This is Turkana IV. For several years, it was considered a Federation Protectorate, but because of the political instability of the planet it was abandoned."
"In the 2330s civil war broke out. The planet gave power to two main factions, the Coalition and the Turkana IV Alliance. Thirty years later, they declared themselves independent and left the Federation."
"Computer, next image." An image of the current state of the planet appeared. Most of the surface of the planet had been destroyed by war. "The last we knew, the planet was a lawless, brutal place. However, two years ago a group calling themselves The Union took over the abandoned Federation colony. They have been working on establishing peace on the planet. It seems to be working. The fighting has ceased and crime is down."
The image disappeared. "Turkana IV is not a Federation planet. However, we've been asked to go in as third party observers to help broker peace. And to make sure everything goes well. Once we enter the sector we'll be out of Federation territory and essentially on our own."
She looked around the room. "Any questions?"
Winchester raised her hand. "What are the military capabilities of the three 'peaceful sides' in question."
Jaxara shook his head, at the intonations in Winchester's statement, and chuckled slightly.
"The people now live up to three kilometers below ground. Nukes, heavy weapons. Rape squads." She hadn't mentioned this last one because she knew some of the crew wouldn't like it.
Alexandria looked down. "These people need Klingons, not Federation forces." She muttered, just soft enough for Jaxara to hear, but no others.
"Did you say 'Rape squads'?" Jaxara asked. "Recommend restriction of female personnel for safety reasons."
"Thank you, Captain Obvious." Alexandria muttered, again, just soft enough for him to hear.
He kicked her in the shin.
Damon said nothing, but nodded at Jaxara's words. He stared piercingly at Samantha indicating without words that he wouldn't have her within 10000 kilometers of that planet if rape squads were running rampant.
"They did have rape squads. But things have calmed down a lot since The Union got involved." She sighed. "Three of the people that will be needed for this mission are female. Lieutenants Nava and Tal and, after the initial contact, me." She continued on, "Commander Sinclair will be in the first away team. Their job will be to assess the situation. I'll go down in the second one along with Nava and Erin."
Lorne appeared about to say something. Alexandria shook her head at him, and he kicked her in the shin again.
"Captain, I insist on having a strong security detail present with all away teams, regardless of whether or not things have calmed down." Jaxara said. "When I say 'security detail', I don't mean strictly Fleet personnel. I would like Marines to go down with them, as well."
Ka's face had gone from grinning to glowering rather quickly. He had met people who had escaped Turkana IV and was acutely aware of the psychological and physical toll a place like that could inflict on a person. However he had somewhat kept up with intelligence reports and remembered a rather important bit at that moment.
"I agree with Lorne, sending the marines down would be prudent to say the least. Also as I recall Turkana IV is also a haven for mercenary groups and their ships, so I'd also recommend that we keep up a patrol of fighters to screen for fast-movers in case any of the merc get any funny notions about trying to take down a galaxy class."
'Fashionably late' was not at all the best way to describe the new Science chief's arrival to the briefing. Instead, tardy, or one of those other words which describe someone who appears far too late to be explained away by a simple mistake, was the best. He arrived just at the words "take down a Galaxy-Class", but had no idea their context. Not wanting to make an ass of himself - or draw attention to himself, he sat down at the unoccupied chair and remained quiet. 'Well, that's one demerit', flashed through his mind.
Erin's expression was one of utter revulsion. ''As much as I'll like to express what I think of the squads in question- remember who we're dealing with. These people are obviously... barbaric and unhinged. We spend in patrols of fighters and squads of marines and they're going to assume we're here to attack.''
She sat back, folding her arms. ''How do you think they're going to react? And remember, they do have nukes. Sending in marines will be no help if they see fit to threaten us. We'll only be adding fuel to the fire.''
''Now as much as I'd like a heavily armed squad with us, its not a good idea, considering who we're dealing with. Only the minimal security detail is advisable.''
