Marek mimicked Erin and skulled the Reddy-Brown liquid then started coughing. Once it subsided his voice was horse. "What? What is that?"
[NEW]
Erin's eyes were watering at the sharp ale but she still managed to laugh at Mareks plight. ''Sorry, should have warned you. You wouldnt be able to pronounce the name- its name out of a type of red root indigenous to a part of the Delta Quadrant and fermented for at least six years in heated vats.''
She nodded at her own empty glass. ''I like this stuff! Great way to ring in the new year, huh?''
His voice still a little horse, Marek answered. "Yeah," he coughed again then an aftertaste pleasured his mouth. "Hmmm nice," he added a moment later.
"Oh I saw Nava over there," Marek gestured to the Ferengi. "Shall we join her?"
Erin nodded, grabbed the remainder of her drink and headed over to Nava, sitting beside the Ferengi.
''Hey Nava, Happy new Year.''
"Happy new year Nava, if I may use your name ma'am?" Marek asked the Ferengi.
Nava nodded "Happy New Year to the both of you as well." She said "And yes you may use my name. I'm not used to responding to my rank." She said with a smile "How have you both been?" She asked knowing that she had secluded herself from the rest of the crew after the last mission.
"I've been well," Marek replied with a smile as he sat down next to her and took another sip of the Kazon beverage. He started coughing again as he did before and looked over at Erin. "Will I get use to it?" He asked in a horse soft voice.
Nava took a sip of her champagne and looked at Marek and then at Erin "What did you give him?" She asked with a small smile.
Erin laughed, slapping Marek on the back. ''In about twenty years or so.'' She told him with a grin before turning to Nava.
''Its an old faveorite- something of a Kazon special brew. Want to try some?''
Doctor Hart sat there alone, listening to the music playing about 15 feet from him, and drinking his drink. He looked around the room, watching the crews making conversation at their table or at the bar. He feels relaxed and is not sure if he wants to join the crowd yet.
Apu waited until there were enough people in the room to keep from standing out. He carried two cases of ale and dropped them on the ground behind the bar. "This didn't come from me," he said with a sly grin to the bartender. "And if the Captain asks, you didn't see me."
He slipped out the back door and came back, carrying two more cases. "If you're going to celebrate, you need to do it in style." He opened one case and pulled out a bottle of blue ale. The label had been conspicuously removed. "One's blue, one's red, one's green and one's purple," he said with a sly grin. He slipped back out the way he'd come, his job for the night finished.
The bartender had just finished stashing all but one of each bottle when Sam walked up to the bar. She saw the unlabeled bottles and raised an eyebrow. "Looks like Apu wasn't here," she said with a sly smile. "I think I'll try a small glass of the red one."
The bartender tried not to chuckle as he poured her a glass.
She saw Randy sitting at one end of the bar and walked over to him. "Hi, Lieutenant. How are you this evening?"
Randy smiled tiredly. "I am just unwinding. I am grateful you gave me the opportunity to get back at the punks who creamed me so thoroughly before." He took a stiff drink of the julep. "I didn't include it in the debrief, but the ship that we boarded," he paused and smiled evilly, "I pulled info from the Osprey's sensor logs, and that was the same ship that almost cost me my life, getting back here. It was rather fulfilling to take it apart the way we did." He looked up at the Captain, unabashed at having left that little personal tidbit out of the logs.
"Well, you know what they say about karma," Sam said with a grin. "Or serendipity, if you will. I'm glad things worked out for you. And I'm glad you made it back."
Randy just grinned at her. "I'm too stubborn to die just yet. Besides, I really enjoy serving on the Calypso. All of you are like family to me, and I can't just stand by and die, just to leave you guys hanging around in boredom."
"We are a family," she said, chuckling. "I can guarantee this place is anything but boring. But it's good to know I'm not the only one." She raised her glass to him in a toast.
Randall met her halfway. "To the family of the Calypso. Happiness, health and home."
"To the family of the Calypso," she echoed, touching her glass to his.
Damon walked into the room late and tried to look as inconspicuous as possible; quietly blending into the crowd of people. It wasn't like him to arrive at social functions, or any function for that matter, so past due.
Truth was he had a lot on his mind of late with the Marines performance on the last away mission. He needed to get it off his mind or he would be left in a sour mood for the evening. When something bothered him his default coping mechanism was the gym and it proved to be once again as he headed straight there after his shift ended. The workout succeeded in distracting him, but unfortunately it also made him lose track of the time. Once made aware of the hour he had rushed out and cleaned up as fast as possible, only to forget to shave before arriving.
His hand rubbed against the stubble on his face as he grabbed a glass of blue liquid from the bar. He sniffed it tentatively and smiled. He knew exactly what the glass' contents were. In fact, he knew the brand and year of harvest as well; having a private stock of the illegal substance himself. He made a mental note to 'thank' the bartender later.
From across the room he spotted Samantha surrounded by people. Quietly he weaved through the crowd, offering polite smiles and nods to those who made note of his arrival.
He sat down next to Samantha and offered a smile to her. "Sorry for coming so late." He apologised.
"I'm just glad you're here, love," she said, giving him a brief kiss.
As the room seemed to be packed and everyone was in good cheer, Chi got up to make a speech. "WELL HELLO EVERYONE! IT'S GOOD TO SEE YOU ALL TONIGHT AND I HOPE YOU CAN ALL SIT BACK AND RELAX. NOW I HAVE I TOAST TO OUR BELOVED COMMANDER SAMANTHA YORK. WELCOME BACK TO YOUR HOME. YOUR FAMiLY WENT TO HELL AND BACK JUST THE SHORT TIME YOU WERE GONE. SO HERE'S TO YOUR LONG AND HAPPY HEALTH." She raised her glass. "TO COMMANDER YORK!" Then slammed her glass sat back down.
The effusiveness of the toast made Sam a little uncomfortable, but she accepted graciously.
"To Captain York!" Damon added to the roar of the room. He couldn't help but grin at it.
~You're not helping~ Sam teased Damon telepathically as she smiled fondly at him.
Sam raised her glass. "To the crew of the Calypso. The finest group of men and women in the fleet!"
