| Personal History | Apu was born in Mumbai, India on April first, 2345. He has five brothers and two sisters, so he learned early how to fend for himself. He spent a good deal of his free time on the streets f Mumbai selling trinkets, playing tour guide or running errands -- all for a credit or two. He learned early the value of money and how to get it. He got in trouble for bookmaking in school. He was taking bets on the outcome of the national football championship. He managed to talk his way out of it by proving that, although technically illegal, the school had no rules against betting on other teams. They only had a rule against betting on their own team. So, technically, he hadn't done anything wrong. And he donated all his winnings to the school for a new library. When he got out of school he went to university and got degrees in psychology and business. He had no interest in working in the field, but the knowledge helped him in the career he really wanted. He opened a small pawn shop where her bartered anything and everything. His reputation grew and people came from all over Europe and Asia to get 'rare an exotic' goods from Apu. Unfortunately, many of his 'rare and exotic' goods were also illegal and he was sent to a penal colony. His wife divorced him, not wanting to have their kids raised with the stigma of a criminal for a parent. Apu served less than half the time, electing to work for Starfleet as Quartermaster where he could be watched over and where his special skills could be used to benefit the Federation. (He became quite good at acquiring stolen artifacts.) He still makes deals, if the price is right. He prides himself on being able to get most things within 48 hours -- a week at most -- if he's close to a starbase or planet. He has the respect of the Ferengi who admire him for his skill in business negotiations. Apu enjoys his reputation and keeps a close eye on what is being sole by whom and where. He has a wealth of information at his disposal and enjoys being the ship's supplier. He is constantly out of uniform, preferring to wear olive drab army fatigues with his rank pips and combadge. But, since he's so good at his job, he gets away with it. |
