[Mercenary Ship]
[OLD]
He waited patiently for them to move in closer, it was a gambit to be sure, but it would throw them off their game. He suddenly wished he had told someone he was stopping as it seemed the rest of his group had moved on down the hallway without him. They weren't far, but far enough that he wouldn't have fire support for a few seconds.
[NEW]
Trent's finger moved its way to the safety; flipping in with a barely audible click. His finger then slowly found its way to the trigger and he steadied himself for what was about to come.
After a final exhalation he yelled out. "CONTACT REAR!" Immediately Trent pulled heavily on the trigger filling the hall with titanium rounds.
At only ten feet away, the first four mercenaries were caught completely off guard by the explosion of sound and full automatic fire at such a close range. They were each hit multiple times and dropped dead. Two others in the second rank were also wounded as stray rounds found their marks.
The dozen or so mercenaries behind them instantly wheeled back around the corner searching for better cover. Two or three of them snapped off shots of their own which went high over Trent's head, but they had a good bead on his location due to his TR's muzzle flash; the mistake of height wouldn't be made twice.
It took only a few seconds for them to re-organise and Trent's advantage was eaten up. They began barking and relaying commands to each other as they advanced under a hail of fire.
Having sensed the shift, the Marine had already started pulling back around the corner. Once satisfied that he had reasonable cover, he jumped to his feet and ran full tilt towards the other Marines as the hallway behind turned into a brilliant display of deadly ballistic tracers and phaser fire.
"INCOMING!" He yelled as he ran up to his squad.
Maxwell looked over his shoulder as Trent came up from behind him screaming that they had incoming. His concentration had broken from the front for a second but from the corner of his eye he noticed shadows moving at the end of the hallway. He quickly readjusted. "It looks like they have surrounded." He said to no one in particular.
Kara had her rifle at the ready, set for a wide-range burst. As soon as Trent was clear she fired, dropping six with a heavy stun. Unfortunately, the rest of them were still behind the corner. She had no idea how many more were waiting for them.
Down the corridor behind them she could hear the distinct sounds of subtle movement. She looked at Thompson and pulled out a stun grenade, giving him a nod. He grinned and pulled out one of his own. "On three," Kara mouthed, pointing the way she was going to throw. He nodded.
On the count of three they both pulled their pins and threw. Kara's hit the wall and rolled neatly around the corner. Thompson's lay in the corridor just past the wall. After a few seconds, there was a faint pop and the sound of bodies hitting the floor.
Kara tapped her combadge. "Melo to Mangalia. We've got company. Watch your six."
"It's not over yet Sergeant." Maxwell said as he looked down the corridor. He could make out the shadows of men against the bulkheads of the corridor then he noticed the front of the barrel pointing in their direction. He quickly took aim but before he could fire one of the men from around the corner fired off their weapon.
Maxwell duck behind a cover as the beam flew right above him. He quickly moved back into his position the weapon aimed and as the man readied his weapon to fire again Maxwell took his shoot and hit the man. The body dropped out of the shadows and to the floor.
"Cover me." Maxwell ordered the few marines that were near him as he moved onto his feet and down the hallway his weapon pointed forward the whole time waiting for someone to jump around from behind the corner but that never happened. He came around the corner to find an empty corridor. "Clear!" He yelled back as he motioned for them to follow him.
Kara signaled her men to follow Tate. When she caught up with him she whispered, "I never said it was over. But it was a safe moment to warn the Lieutenant. Just in case he hasn't hit trouble yet." She nodded to her team to tell them to spread out. "Go ahead. We'll cover you."
"Point taken Sergeant." Maxwell said as he looked at her with a smirk on his face. He nodded as she instructed him to take point and slowly began moving down the corridor. The corridor that they were venturing down was long with no other corridors leading into it or away from it and no doors along the walls. This presented them with advantages and disadvantages.
It was easier for them to keep an eye on the front and back and not have to worry about other directions but the disadvantage was that they would be pinned down easily. He would have also preferred to have a corridor with multiple entry points.
As they were nearing the end of the corridor they could see shadows moving in the area as well as voices from multiple targets. Maxwell motioned for them to stop and take a knee. He listened and watched for a couple of seconds. He motioned to the rest of the team that there were five tangos in the area.
Kara groaned silently and got into position. She motioned to the others that she'd take the second target. She signaled for Thompson to take the third before turning and preparing for the next assault.
