[En route to conference chambers]
Erin caught up with Nava before the peace talks began yet again- there was something she wanted to ask of the diplomat. During the talks they had had little time to confer and she wanted to know that they were all on the one wavelenght, so to speak.
''Hey, how do you think the talks are going?'' She asked, jerking her head in the direction of the hall.
Nava looked at Erin "I don't like the feel of it." She said thoughtfully "It almost seems as if they are playing the ends against the middle. One doesn't seem to want to concede anything." She looked back at Erin "I'm worried that this is going to fail miserably. We're not wanted here by at least one faction and possibly more." She shook her head "What's your impression?"
Erin nodded. ''It doesnt take a physcyatrist to see the tension between the factions. With this level of animosity between the leaders, any peace talks or treaties are not going to last very long.''
''At best, I think the mission here will be a failure. At worst I think we'll be caught in the crossfire. But I'm going to trust the captain judgement on this one.''
Nava nodded "I think you're right. I would like to think that everything will work out in everyone's favor, I just don't see that happening right now." She said thinking about the talks that she had just witnessed "I fear that the factions will team up and then work against the others only creating other problems. I'm not sure how to best help them meet all of their needs."
Erin looked uneasy. ''I cant think why we were brought out here if the faction leaders wer'nt all in favour of this. It seems like they were.. coerced into the deal. Whats the point of peace talks if they dont want peace? How did they even agree enough to invite us?''
Nava was thoughtful for a moment "I don't think all parties were involved in the decision to bring us here." She said "I think the Union brought us in without notifying the others until it was too late." Nava looked up for a moment "I think that there are definitely ulterior motives behind us being here." She said "It will be interesting to see how this plays out."
Erin nodded darkly. ''Interesting is one word for it. Come on, we'll be late.''
[Conference Chambers, New Paris, Turkana IV]
Samantha and Damon walked into the conference room promptly at 0900 the next morning. Sam was once again in her dress white uniform.
She hadn't spoken to Delon, but she assumed that all went well with his dinner plans.
She squeezed Damon's hand before watching him take his seat.
"Good luck." He mouthed the words to Samantha as he found a comfortable spot. If the last meeting they had was any indication of how these proceedings would go today, she was going to need all the luck she could get.
Delon stepped into the conference room a few moments after 0900. He was once again dressed in his dress uniform. He noticed Commander York and Major Raine were already present. He gently shook his head as he looked at Commander York. He didn't have anything to report. The dinner had gone in the direction that he did not expect it would. It had turned out to be a personal visit and not professional. He took the same seat as he did the day previous and waited.
Sam nodded, understanding Delon's message.
Erin was the next to arrive after Delon, and took the seat she had used the day before.
Even on the small amount of experience she had had on the planet, she was liking it less and less. There was nothing concrete, but the tensions between the leaers had her on edge. Shrugging the thoughts away, she sat and waited.
Nava had followed the group in and sat towards the back of the room so that she could watch. She was interested to see what the proceedings would bring to light.
The main conference doors opened wide as the echoing noise of high heels hitting the ground echoed in the conference room. Lumiya Onasi stepped into the conference room. Her eyes fixed on the conference table. She was either early or the others were running late as she only noticed Commander York sitting at the table. She turned her head to the seats reserved for observes. There were quite a few empty ones but she did notice Tovan. She turned back to the table and headed for it.
She was once again dressed formally, however this time she was not in a dress but instead in a pair of high heels with a pair of black slacks and a jacket to match. The blouse underneath was white. She approached the table and took a seat. "Good morning Commander." She said as she sat down leaning back in the chair and crossed her legs.
"Morning," Sam replied. "Wish I could have dressed less formally. A dress and heels would be a nice change from dress whites. The disadvantages of being the commanding officer," she said, grinning.
Grand Marshal Varik walked in much the same way he did the day before. He sat himself in the same spot at the table and pointedly ignored the Starfleet presence. With a brief glance he regarded Lumiya before folding his arms across his chest and took to staring at a fixture on the wall.
Nava watched the Grand Marshal closely and noticed the look between he and Lumiya. It was subtle but she was watching everyone closely.
Gloriana walked in and smiled at everyone present. "Good morning. It has again fallen to me to begin the proceedings today. I wish each party to delineate what they want to see in a lasting peace accord and how they want to government set up." She looked pointedly at Grand Marshal Varik. "You may begin."
"I'm no politician." Teenan began "I have little to say on the matter as well. What I will say is that I would rather submit to death by Sieran beetles than see Lumiya or Xon in control."
There was a rather brief smile that light up on the face of Lumiya as she watched Teenan from across the table. For a moment she had imagined Teenan being submitted to death by Sieran beetles and it was almost a pleasant thought. It sure would make these peace talks a lot easier. "I'm sure that can be arranged." She said smiling at the Grand Marshal. She almost count believe that those words left her mouth but she didn't regret it. It felt rather good to say it.
The corner of Teenan's mouth lifted in amusement over her comment. He quite enjoyed the fact that he managed to illicit that kind of comment out of the normally calm and austere facade.
"I doubt that would be the torture of your choice, Lumiya. For that I would think snakes would be your preferred method; considering your obvious kinship to them."
Lumiya couldn't help herself but laugh lightly at the comment. She found it amusing and had no problem showing just that. There was a new found confident to her. "Indeed snakes would be more appropriate, I'm sure you would feel right at home than." She leaned forward with a grin on her face looking across the table at Teenan. "Now, let's get these discussions started like adults."
