1,220 words; about a 6 minute read

Mission: Food for the Gods
Location: Conference Room
Timeline: Fifteen minutes after "Approaching the System"

ON

Five minutes before the briefing, Sam had the images she wanted and walked into the conference room to take her seat at the table.

Munich was not far behind his Commanding Officer in his coming off the bridge and into the meeting. The PADD he brought would be very active as is usual for Munich and any briefing.

Commodore York." Munich greet as he entered and stood behind the chair on the right side of York. "I have confirmations that all the required staff acknowledged the request for the meeting."

"Thank you, Mr. Munich."

T'Pral walked in precisely two minutes prior to the appointed hour. "Commodore, Commander," she offered in greeting before taking her seat. The situation presented so far intrigued her, and with Lieutenant Dixon doing well in Engineering, she was looking forward to an opportunity to investigate further.

Shan took a bit of a deep breath before she walked into the conference room, head high and a confident, sure smile on her lips. As she was new to the Assistant Chief position, she hadn't been in a lot of meetings with senior staff. She didn't have to show that, though. A quiet nod to the officers already there and general, "Afternoon," was her greeting as she slid into a seat somewhat towards the foot of the table, but not all the way at the end.

Sam smiled a greeting to T'Pral and Lei. "As this was short notice I didn't put anything out, so feel free to replicate something if you wish."

Shan nodded very slightly. "I'm fine, thank you," she said. She didn't feel the need to busy her hands with food and drink, and she would hate to have a mouth full of something if she needed to say something brilliant and insightful. On the off chance, she thought with a little internal laugh and reminded herself to share that plan with Savar later tonight.

Damion entered quietly, coffee in hand, as he took his seat. He seemed in his own world, taking at least a moment to acknowledge the Captain, before drinking from his mug and looking through his PADD.

Remy walked into the Conference room with Kirk, his Capuchin on his shoulder, and a PADD in his hand. He took his seat and reached into his pocket, removing a bag of dates. He handed one to the monkey and tucked the bag back in his pocket.

Kirk grabbed the date with both hands and excitement. He smiled, letting out a happy squeak before taking a bit. He grinned from cheek to cheek before throwing his hand up, as if waving hello, before going back to his treat.

When everyone had gathered, Sam began. "As you know, we have a rather delicate situation on our hands. Something on the planet has called for help. Granted, it appears to be an automated repair signal, but I don't want to let whatever it is fail in case it causes harm to the people who inhabit the planet. At the same time, we have to make sure that we follow the Prime Directive. I want to send a team down to examine that edifice that's the likely source, but I want to hear what the rest of you think."

"My team and I have come across things like this before." Remy said with some firmness in his voice. "If you give us the appropriate time before you launch your away team we can go out into the Horus and retrieve some useful information to help the team blend in a bit more accurately. Pulling news feeds and any other type of media should give us some idea of where they are and what to wear, more importantly, what to avoid. Political topics and the like. Not to mention we can properly assess their defensive capability. We don't know if we are dealing with a warp capable species, but just because they haven't yet traveled the stars, doesn't mean their weapons and defenses aren't up to par with ours. They just might be the type who prefer their little corner and choose to ignore everything else."

"There are no news feeds or media," Sam said. "Not according to communications or the scans from the fighters. However, feel free to do a more details scan to get clothing and any information on daily routines."

"Perhaps the Captain would prefer to send the fighters, whose ships are NOT equipped with the proper technology to deal with this type of situation?" Remy replied quickly.

Damion rolled his eyes a bit before shaking his head. "If you're going to be so offended, maybe we could not bother to use your shuttle at all, Batiste?"

Shan's eyes darted back and forth between the two men, wondering if there was a history there she wasn't privy to. At the risk of taking a side, though, she pointed out, "Actually, if we can manage it, it might be best not to use a shuttle. It could be found or seen. Some basic precautions would allow us to beam down safely and discreetly. A couple sub-dermal implants would allow for communications and provide a reliable signal to beam back out."

Remy laughed. "You don't know the Horus. It won't be seen. I assure you."

Sam looked from Remy to Damion and shook her head. "Not in here, gentlemen. If Mr. Batiste does not wish us to use the Horus, we can use the Calypso and scan from a distance. It is quite capable of gathering the information we need"

"Not what I said, but it's nice to know my words still fall on deaf ears." Remy replied quickly.

"I understood what you said," Sam replied before anyone else could.

She turned to Lei. "That's an excellent idea for the away team. They need to look and act like they belong on the planet. Commbadges and tricorders would be too obvious. I also believe they should stay away from the inhabitants as much as possible."

"If we could get an idea of their clothing and things they use en mass." Munich began. "If the females carried some satchel or such that we could modify to our advantage." He continued. "Camouflage the things we need; I have seen a wrist watch with a display that could relay readings from a tricorder in a purse or satchel kind of thing so we are not so obvious as well? If we are creative it might help us get the scans we need on the ground?"

Sam nodded in agreement. "Jewelry would be better, if they wear any. Harder to lose. Other suggestions?"

"We shouldn't rush the away team onto the planet. The little information we go with, the more of a mistake that can be made. Why not come up with ways to obtain this information before jumping to running around and draw attention to ourselves?" Damion said softly as he looked around. "While I do not agree with the Chief Intel's methods, his team does have experience in these kinds of things."
