Personal History | Shan to her friends, Shan to herself even, the only people who call her Lei are her family and her Mate. Shan was raised on Mars, within sight of Olympus Mons. One of her favorite sights is the mountain at sunrise, seen after a vigorous workout or a yoga routine. Her parents are Tu and Ling Shan, her only other living relative is her grandmother, Lan Shan. They still live on Mars. As the only child, Shan was loved and somewhat doted on, but her parents carefully avoided spoiling her. She grew up relatively well-adjusted, with a slight wild streak, but never in a malicious sense. She just liked to have fun. She has always been quite competitive and enjoys sports. She loves puzzles in many forms and has a favorite holoprogram about Immortals who engage in armed combat with swords to compete for an Ultimate Power. Shan joined Starfleet Academy for the challenge mostly. She wanted to see if she could. So she did. Her grades were never outstanding, mostly because she was having as much fun as she could reasonably get away with, but they were good enough to graduate and get a decent posting. It annoyed several of her professors to no end that she didn’t fully apply herself. Two years ago she met a delightful puzzle named Savar, a Vulcan Intelligence Officer who expressed emotion and found her as attractive as she found him. Being a girl who liked to have fun, she didn’t initially take it seriously, just as a flirtation and very satisfying physical relationship. She thought that was what he wanted as well and so was dismayed when she found herself falling in love with him. As Savar’s Pon Farr approached, a Vulcan woman arrived to claim him as her Mate; Savar turned her down and chose to Bond with Shan instead, who had to fight for the right to become his Mate. They were Bonded in Vulcan tradition. For Shan, that’s enough and she currently has no plans for a Human-style wedding or marriage. Over the next few years, Shan went on several “undercover” missions with Savar, usually posing as a wife, girlfriend, mate or escort to provide a distraction or diversion. The danger and challenge were exhilarating. Unfortunately, the frequent clandestine trips damaged her professional life slightly. On the official record they are listed as Leave Time, which made her seem less than serious about her career. She was passed over for promotion twice. Recently, her Mate transferred out of Intelligence and into the Diplomatic corp, assigned a temporary position on Vulcan. In order to stay with him, and partly to get away from a ship where she felt the Command Crew had developed a negative image of her, she went into an 'inactive reserve' status, putting her commission on hold so to speak, while she thought about the next steps in her career and her life. When she applied to go back into active duty status, she had really hoped to be able to able to use the new duty station as a way to have a chance to make a good first impression and get things back on track. Being offered a position as Assistant Chief of Operations was almost beyond her wildest dreams and she leapt at the chance. Savar was supportive of her taking the position, and even helped by getting some her less sensitive work with the Intel department declassified so she could get credit for what had previously looked like excessive amounts of leave. He seemed as willing to leave Vulcan as she was, and was transferred with her to her new duty station on the Calypso |
