Alexandra was so struck by surprise she couldn't even speak for a minute or so. Whaaat did you say?? The botanical gardens?? The doctor believed she knew her daughter well, and was sure such a place would be on Veronica's 'never to visit' list. But, for some mysterious reason, that was exactly the place the girl begged her to have the two of them to visit while on vacation on Vulcan. So, she planned the trip to the large arboretum located in the capital city, and the two of them were on the way to the air tram station, when she received a sudden emergency call from the Calypso.
"Vacation over... at least temporary...", Alex told Veronica with sad eyes, as she hurried to the next transporter station to get back on board in a hurry. They didn't specify anything. They just said it's an urgent medical emergency situation, involving the ship's chief engineer, Lt. T'Pral.
Leaving Veronica in the turbolift leading to their quarters, the doctor rushed to sickbay, hoping to find the people she have summoned - her new assistant and the on-duty nurse - already being there. "Report.", she said, as she entered the room, quickly getting into her medical lab coat.
Softtouch heard the call from the explosion and figured there mighthve been Calypso personnel at the scene. Without a word he started to get the SIckBay ready; explosions often came with the need for an operating room, especially a direct beam to the Sick Bay.
[Explosion planet side; one in the blast radius who is Calypso.] Softtouch signed with his gloves. [Close range and a Vulcan Officer T'Pral.] The synthsized voice was almost human in tone. [Her medical records are on Padd ner Bed one where she is due to arrive.] His hands were moving almost like a blur as the tanslator worded him qiuickly. [I willcontinue prep of O-R- 1.] Softtouch informed. [In case needed?] It was a requst for confirmation.
Doctor Lita Williams swallowed uncomfortably, standing in the eye of the storm that was the skeleton crew of of medical staff dashing around to prepare themselves for those injured in the explosion. She hadn't properly toured Sickbay yet, and she hardly knew a single member of the crew. Technically, the Calypso was still extending shore leave. An emergency of this magnitude, on Vulcan of all places, was the last thing that anyone had expected. The ACMO stepped up to Alves' side. "Where do you need me, Doctor?"
During all the chaos, the telltale whine and blue glow of a transport in progress deposited the Vulcan engineer on the emergency biobed. Dust and green blood colored nearly every square centimeter of her torn Vulcan civilian robes. Underneath the dirt and caked blood her face was barely recognizable. Her life signs were faint, but at least she was intact. A minor miracle, given how close she was to the blast.
"Oh dear...", Alex shook her head as she listened to Nurse Jemnar explaining the situation concerning the explosion. She knew it was something of this magnitude, otherwise they wouldn't have called her in such a hurry. On the other hand, the precise and quick work done by 'Mr. Softtouch' came as a pleasant surprise, and she looked at the nurse with a grateful smile. "Thank you, Mr. Jemnar. Please, continue preparing O-R-1."
"I'm afraid that's it for vacation.", she told Doctor Williams with grim shrug, while indicating the direction they were heading to.
Accompanied by her assistant CMO, Alex rushed to biobed one and picked up the PADD prepared by the Minaran nurse, while the dirt and blood covered form of Lt. T'Pral materialized on the bed. She picked up a medical tricorder and quickly scanned through the unconscious Vulcan woman. "Life signs are faint. Internal bleeding. Severe trauma on multiple places. Fragmentation injuries.", she explained, looking at Lita, "But no sign of tertiary injuries. No bone fracture or severed limbs. She's intact. A smaller miracle.", she said, with a faint hopeful gleam in her eyes, "Let's prepare her for immediate operation.", she ordered, then gave the tricorder to the other doctor, "Keep her under close surveillance."
"Yes, Doctor," Lita acknowledged. She tapped away at the screen, all the while biting her bottom lip. Pulse was erratic. Despite her apparent survival, whatever blast the woman had been caught in had done its job in tearing through veins and arteries. This was going to be a complicated surgery.
Naturally, it was in one of those few moments when Doctor Alves had to step away that the Vulcan's heartbeat began to fall into a shaking erratic pattern in its futile attempt to make up for falling blood pressure. Doctor Williams shook her head even as the tricorder began to chirp a shrill warning. "No, no, no, no! She's going into V-Fib! You, nurse, cardiostimulator."
"Right away, Doctor."
"You!" Lita pointed to another nurse, a young man to whom she had yet to be introduced. She reached out to the nearby supply tray and grabbed a low powered materials torch. With an underhand toss she threw it over T'Pral's body at her new colleague. "Get these clothes off of her. Computer, establish a sterile field. Level 2."
By the time Lita had finished pulling up her sleeves, the first nurse slapped the cardiostimulator into her open hand. She wasted no time in setting it against the Engineer's torso, bare skin, a few inches to the right, where the Vulcan heart was located. Green blood pooled where she applied pressure. One quick shock to the heart. Two. Three. Four. T'Pral's lifeless body rose and fell with each application of directed electrical energy, until finally the tricorder's shrill beeping died away and returned to a steady pulsing rhythm. This would buy them another few minutes before surgery would begin.
Lita wiped her forehead with the back of her arm, her hands slick in Vulcan blood. She exchanged a look with the nurse across the bed from her, who had placed their patient's clothing into a nearby storage bin. The ACMO breathed an exasperated sigh. "This has been quite the first day."
