Mission: Tabula Rasa

ON

Sam spent two days talking to people and observing. Then she pulled people aside and selected leaders. Leaders of twenty, leaders of one hundred and leaders of five hundred.

It was these leaders she called to a special meeting to discuss options.

Cameron was umong the first to arrive with Kara close behind. It seemed like the two of them were inseparable. Spotting the woman she'd talked with, he nodded to himself and walked over to her, "Sam"

"Hello, Cam and Kara. Thank you both for coming."

Sterling came a few minutes after Cameron. He wasn't sure what to expect, or what he might be called upon to do, but he was willing to try anything at this point. Anything that might give them a better chance of surviving.

Mandy was also at the meeting, though she chose not to speak right away. Too many strangers, and she didn't trust them all yet.

"Hi. I'm Sam," she began. "I know we don't know each other, and we don't know what's going on, but I think it's time we start taking control of our own destinies. To that end, I've asked you to help me get us organized and see if we can start getting some answers."

"We need hunting parties to get meat, gatherers and planters to help with the edible plants, people to go out in teams and explore the area and people here to organize groups for cooking and making cloth. Is there anything else we need?" she asked.

"The only other thing I can think of is security patrols. All the things you mentioned are important, but we need to make sure we are not attacked by something or someone and we need to try to ensure from internal attacks and arguments as well."

"Okay, who would like to head these up?" Sam asked.

"Well my preference woulg be exploration," Sterling said, "But it was my idea so if no one else wants the assignment I can head that up."

"Mine, too," Sam said, grinning at Sterling.

Hans came through the doorway with a mental list of what projects he had to oversee; the repairs and hunting to bring supplies are what he ahd focused upon the most. His biggest problem was establishing communications between his people and establishing a type of code with mirrors to flash and get things done. The language barrier between some races when excited they diviate from what has become established as the common language they seem to share as a group. It seemed most had control enough to work together.

"Goot Day Mine friends." Hans said with what would have been a click of the heels has he hard enough heels in his shoes to do so.

"Thank you for coming," Sam said.

Sterling looked up at the man who had just entered. A rather unpleasant thought crossed his mind. A distant memory he couldn't quite recall. He gave Hans a long rather incredulous look. He had never met the man, didn't even know his name and the man had the gall or perhaps simply arrogance to call him friend.

He bristled at the thought and glared at the speaker his arms folded across his chest. "Who the HELL are you? he asked, and how the hell do you think we are friends since we have never met?"

Gaia entered at this moment was was taken a back at the anger that rolled off the dark haired man with spots of sorts on his face. She visibly looked scared for the briefest of moments. A memory nudged its way forward and she remembered seeing Sterling fight another some where else, some time else and spoke up as she moved closer to the group. "Who cares, if he called you friend or not. You on the other hand are not a friend. You like to fight, so cease and desist!"

"Until we know better," Sam interjected, "We are friends by necessity. We all have to work together if we are going to survive. That means no fighting amongst ourselves. I don't care if you don't like each other, just behave."

Gaia glared her eyes at the spotted man and then at the woman called Sam who seemed to think she was in charge. Gaia felt that she normally gave orders and seldom took them from anyone so she did not understand why she was here to take orders from Sam. She almost walked away at the woman's comment.

Lizzie was standing in the back and spoke up. "I know a bit about plants. I'd like to go with the team that goes foraging."

Sterling glanced between all the other speakers. There was something about Han's demeanor that just didn't sit right with him. Nor did he especially care for the words of the woman called Sam. However he wasn't going to start anything right now.

He continued to glare at Hans, but relaxed his stance slightly.

Mandy tried to break the silence. "I would love to go with the hunting group, it just seems like the kind of thing I'd be good at. Call it a gut feeling, but hey, that's almost all I have to go on now." She smiled, trying to be humorous.

Helga walked into the group. "If it's all right with the rest of you, I will stay here and sort out blankets and other supplies." She had a soft Swedish accent. "I prefer to make sure we are able to help anyone who gets sick or injured."

Damon sat quietly at the edge of the room sharpening a shiv he made earlier from some scrap metal. He discretely used his time eying out who was going to be a threat to the groups survival. So far his list included Cam, this guy Sterling and at least a half dozen other people who had either grumbled or out right disapproved of the peace Samantha was trying to foster within the colony. He thought passingly of quietly killing them in the night should they continue making a fuss. He shrugged to himself, either that or make them his allies.

Gaia looked around once more and determinedly walked away and went back to cook.

Sam watched Gaia go and shook her head. "Okay, the rest of you, let's divide up and get moving. The sooner we get organized, the sooner we can figure out what's going on."
