595 words; about a 3 minute read
Mission:
Tabula Rasa
Location: Security Offices
Sterling had met the Captain and the Counselor eaten a nice dinner and even though he wasn't supposed to check in until the next day. He wasn't even sure his new boss would still be the office, but it wouldn't hurt to try.
He approached the office, saw light beneath the door, decided to take his chances and pressed the chime.
"Come in," Eamon announced from inside.
Sterling stepped into the room with a smile. He gave his chief a smart salute, "Good afternoon sir," he said. "I am Sterling Kamala, reporting for duty sir.'
"Ah, my new Security Investigations Officer," Eamon stood and offered his hand. "Welcome aboard. So what brings you to the flagship? Just because we are the flagship doesn't mean we get more action then other ships." He chuckled.
"I'm just a simple Warrant Officer. Starfleet calls and I obey. This is actually my first permanent position. So I am looking forward to it."
Eamon raised an eyebrow. "I'm sorry you may have misunderstood. Did you request to work on Calypso or did command assign you here?"
"I have been around, don't get me wrong, but I've always been a short timer, They sent me to whichever hot spot they needed someone good at. But to answer your question, I requested a permenant assignment. I had heard lots of good things about the Calypso, but I did not request her specifically."
Eamon wasn't sure what was going on with this guy. "Very well. May I ask how you intend to go about your duties?" He asked deciding to move things along.
"I guess I'll let you take the lead, you are the department head after all. From what I understand I'll just be a normal security officer unless there is a crime that needs to be investigated. Unless you want me to operate differently."
This was a strange meeting, Eamon thought. "Partially yes you are a regular security officer should the need arise for it otherwise you are primarily to investigate any and all crimes; and there are the unusual mysteries that you will take the lead in solving. How long have you been with Security Investigations for?" He asked.
"I have been working with them for about three years now," Sterling replied. There was something about the other officer's demeanor that was just slightly off, at least that was the read he was getting. He wasn't quite sure why.
"I appreciate your clarifying my duties. I have been in several postings where they only used me on a part time basis for Security Investigations. I'm glad to see that, that will be a full time position here."
Eamon smiled. "You must have been bored?"
"Well to be honest, routine security work is a bit dull compared to investigating crimes, but I suppose the experience is helpful."
"What if there are no crimes to investigate? You must have other interests to keep you entertained until a crime happens?" Eamon asked.
"I like to cook, do some painting and love anything outdoorsy. What about you?"
Eamon smiled. "Well I'll have to get back to you on that as I don't have much time for myself, Security is a full-time job as I am the chief." He stood and offered his hand. "I better let you get to work, we have much to do."
"Understood sir, but you should try to find some free time, otherwise you're going to burn yourself out and then you won't be any good to yourself or the department." Sterling finished as he turned to leave.
