Mission: What Dreams May Come?
[OLD]
"The chef can make you almost anything you like." Mojo replied and led him to the back room, the water parted as they neared the gambling area and closed behind them after they entered. Mojo led him to the bar to sit next to Maria."
[NEW]
"HI," Maria said, nodding to the newcomer.
He smiled albeit a bit tentatively at the woman. "Good evening," he replied, It's a nice night, well I just arrived it still seems like the middle of the day to me. Very interesting establishment, I've never seen one quite like it."
"And you won't. Each Bazinga's is unique to themselves, no two alike. What can i get you?" the bartender asked as Mojo walked away from the man and the woman.
"How about some Terran food. A cheeseburger with bacon and grilled onions, some fried sweet potatoes and I'd like a nice ice cold lager. Can your chef fix that?"
"Yes, she can." the bartender replied
"I'm Maria," she said to the newcomer. "This place is new. It's pretty impressive, isn't it?"
"Very," he replied, "I'm not really into the whole bar thing, but this is definitely a unique experience. I could even get used to it.
Maria nodded. "It just opened. I figured since I couldn't sleep, I might as well check it out." She glanced at him again, noting that he seemed to be well-rested, which was stood out among all the exhausted personnel she'd run into of late. "Are you new?"
"I am, I'm sorry please forgive me. My name is Sterling. I'm the ship's new Investigator. It is nice to meet you. I'm on a different cycle so I'm not really tired. You're more than welcome to join me. We can stay up together."
He blushed slightly, "Wait that may have come out wrong. I wasn't trying to be flirty."
"It's okay," Maria assured him. "At this point, any conversation is better than my own." Her eyes widened. "Okay, that didn't come out right, either. Sorry. Put it down to sleep dep. Let me try again. Yes, I would like some company."
He tired not to let his nervousness show. He always felt awkward in these kinds of situations. He'd dated before and of course this was just an informal meeting of strangers it could hardly be considered anything close to date, but he dreaded the possibility of getting too close and bonding with someone.
"Well good, I'm just ordered some food can I get you something?"
She considered for a moment. "I think comfort food is in order. I'd like a plate of French fries, if it's okay with you."
"Of course it's okay," he replied. What would you like to drink?" he paused for a moment. "White wine? No that seems to predictable. Tequila perhaps, or am I off base?"
"Sangria," she grinned. "Cold."
"Of course. Sangria is always good. So do you feel like talking about what's going on around here or would you rather talk about something else? Or maybe not even talk at all.I do play a mean game of pool."
Meanwhile Jourdan had been following the sound of music in the jeffries tubes for an hour now. She had been wondering if it was a problem with the comm system, also she wouldn't admit it but she was pretty lost.
"Why did I take a posting on such a huge ship?" she asked herself out loud as she opened a Jeffries tube hatch.
She was surprised to see that it was quite dark where she was. She crawled out and found herself behind the bar at bazinga's looking at the customers.
"Hi, can I have a martini and coke, a sweet apple cider and a blue lagoon please". Jourdan looked around the bar looking for how to make the drinks then stopped.
"Wait a minute, I'm an engineer not a bar tender..."
"So your behind the bar, so engineer or not make me a drink." The customer replied
The bartender came back with the burger for the customer and placed it before the man who ordered it.
"Thank you and don't forget the fries for my friend Maria." the Kirosian replied.
"Hey what are you doing back here? Only employees behind the bar unless you want to start working for us." She said as she looked at Jourdan.
Jourdan put on an innocent smile.
"Well I can go where I like, it comes with the position of Chief Engineer. Plus, I wasn't aware that this Jeffries Tube hatch came about behind the bar" she said. "I'll happily crawl back in and find somewhere else to come out; if you like?"
"No, your fine." She smiled "We placed that there deliberately so if needed, an engineer could come out and serve drinks to the customers."
"Well, not 'the' Chief Engineer. I best get back to work. I need to go home to Ruby" Jourdan said as she looked around the room for the door. The turbolift was probably the easiest option.
"Through the sheet of water and across the room and then out the door." The bartender gave directions to the engineer.
"Thanks" Jourdan said. She quickly made her way out of the room and into the corridor. She just didn't often do social situations.
The bartender just shook her head and wiped the bar off after she picked an empty glass up.
"Aye, que chica," Maria said, chuckling. "She is a force to be reckoned with. Did you know she used a steam engine -- a real 21st Century locomotive -- to maintain life support while she rebooted the ship's computers?"
Sterling's left brow arched in surprise. He almost pointed out that he had just come on board so how could he have heard such a thing, but that would have been terribly impolite. So instead he said, "No,I did not. that sounds like a fascinating story. Tell me about it."
"It's been the talk of the ship lately. I wouldn't be surprised if you heard it from someone else." Maria munched on a French fry for a moment. "The ship's computer got a Borg virus. Engineering had to shut down everything and do a cold boot. So, Lieutenant Abbott used a 21st Century steam locomotive that she has running around one of the lower decks to power life support while we were dead in the water. The Commodore and some of the senior staff were trapped on the holodeck -- a wake and a promotion for the Marines -- so they missed it all."
"She sounds like she is incredibly bright and talented, I'll have to hear it for myself from her some day. But tonight, I just want to hear about you. Tell me more about yourself.'
"I was born and raised in the Yucatan on Earth. Lots of ancient ruins in the jungle. I used to pretend to be an explorer as a child. So, when I grew up, I became a scientist and joined Starfleet. I still love ancient civilizations. So, I guess you could say I never really grew up." She grinned and continued. "I'm also a wicked futbol player. What about you?"
