[OLD]

"I am so sorry." Gaia closed her eyes for a long moment and waited and then opened them and wondered did anyone ever have a happy life.

[NEW]

"Thank you," Sam said. "I long ago came to terms with it." She had mostly come to terms with her alternate self's family still being alive in this universe. "It actually gave me the drive to be where I am now, so it did have a positive side."

Gaia smiled "That is why you are successful as the Captain."

"That and I have a good support network here on the ship." Especially Damon, who'd always been there for her. "What about you? Do you keep in touch with your family?"

Gaia grinned her voice held a light happy tone "Oh yes, almost constantly as they are a vital part of what I do. I am sure that Maia, my sister will come to visit as soon as she is able to take some time away. My grandfather Teji, He may not come to visit as he is pretty busy but we talk frequent enough."

"That's wonderful. It's always good to be close to your family."

"Do you have any children?" Gaia asked curiously

"No." There really was nothing more to say on the subject. Sam was happy that Damon asked her to marry him. He was so afraid that his job would lead to a short life that he was afraid to commit to anything but his job.

Gaia nodded she would say that she understood but she had yet to marry or even have children. Most races lived much shorter lives then her so children was often a correct question to ask a married woman. They usually ranted on and on about how great their kids were. Mostly it was irritating to Gaia but she had some sympathy. "I see"

Sam just nodded. "So, what are your plans for Bazinga's here on the Calypso?"

Gaia smiled "We will of course make a profit, but besides that give your people an inviting place to relax."

"It does." Sam looked around. "I must say, I like the decor. This will be a nice change from the lounges we already have. More upscale." She smiled at Gaia. "You've done well."

Heat rose up in Gaia's face as she glanced down at the table top. She was not used to such compliments. "Thank you, Ma'am. That is very kind of you to say so. Unlike many people we do not change our decor every other month. What types of events would you like to see or participate in for the morale of the crew?"

"Sam, please. I'm fond of a live band. We get an occasional impromptu concert in the lounge, but it's not quite the same. I know this may not be something that can happen right away, which is fine. And if you don't like it, feel free to ignore me. It might also be nice to have a ballroom night every now and then where you have a full orchestra -- live or holographic -- and ballroom dancing."

Gaia nodded "We might be able to make those accommodation for you Captain."

"Only if it fits in with your idea of this place. You've done an amazing job. I don't want you to make changes just because I asked you to," Sam insisted.

Gaia smiled it lit her eyes she really enjoyed this woman's company and hoped that they could and would have other opportunities to talk. "Capt... um... Sam, I never said that it would change the focus of Bazings's. It is quite easy to remove chairs and tables to open a space where someone such as yourself could enjoy being in the arms of a handsome man as he twirls you around the floor. One day perhaps I will be so lucky to find someone like that."

"I'm sure you will," Sam said. "Who knows, you might find someone here on the Calypso. There are a lot of good people here."

Gaia shrugged "Perhaps and then again perhaps not. My profession keeps me pretty busy, for instance. I am here speaking with you when I could be else where making a club sandwich or creating a new dessert. All be told, I don't get out much." The dark haired woman laughed lightly.

"I'll have to see what I can do to change that," Sam said. "I will likely ask you to help with an away team from time to time. I like having a variety of opinions when I'm gathering information."

Gaia raised an eyebrow at the woman. "Hun, I know about two things, cooking and dessert. Concerning dessert it should preferably be anything that has chocolate in it. Beyond that there is not much else to my world."

"That's okay. Your point of view will be enough. And maybe your cooking skills can come in handy, too." Sam wasn't sure how, but she'd keep it in the back of her mind in case something ever came up.

Gaia nodded not sure what else to say "Well, Ma'... um Sam is there anything else I can get you?"

"No, thanks. I'm good for now. Thanks for the chat."

Sterling had heard about some of the unusual occurrences going on around the ship. He had yet to be affected by them personally, but he had only been on board less than a day. He could sense the emotional tension though and could have simply because of his training, his natural, though somewhat limited empathic ability only emphasized the fact.

The second to the last thing he wanted was to be with a bunch of people with all their emotions vying for his attention, the last thing he wanted was to be alone. So he found himself walking into the lounge.

The first thing he picked up on was the sound of gaming going on in a different part of the establishment. His natural instincts were to go and investigate, make sure everything was being run legitimately and above board, but he stopped himself. He wasn't here in an official capacity so he forced himself to relax.

He was dressed in an old pair of white chinos and a teal polo shirt that fit a little snugly around his lithe frame. He looked around for a host or server.

Mojo stepped up the man "Evening Mon, gambling, bar or a table?"

He smiled at the host, "If I can get some food, preferably not the replicated kind, at the bar I can go there, I don't need a table just for myself.

"The chef can make you almost anything you like." Mojo replied and led him to the back room, the water parted as they neared the gambling area and closed behind them after they entered. Mojo led him to the bar to sit next to Maria."
