As soon as Samantha got her boxes stored and found herself a room, she went in search of Captain Montgomery. She had a number of questions to ask him while they were waiting.
The CO was quietly pleased with the way his staff was shaping up, now all they needed was access to the ship! A lieutenant in a teal uniform entered the temporary office suite.
Sam looked around for a moment, then walked over to the Commander. "Commander Montgomery?" she asked, hoping she was in the right place.
"The one and only" replied the Commanding Officer, "and you are Lieutenant Samantha York, I've just ben passed your file" he exclaimed with a grin, as he stood up and shook hands with Samantha.
"Yes, I am Sam," she said with a grin. "A pleasure to meet you. This is the second time I've been on a ship from drydock."
"I find it a much more rewarding experience than joining a crew that's already had time to gel, everyone is trying to sus out everyone else and it creates a unique dynamic!" He paused, "Which other ship did you leave drydock with?"
"The Republic. The Captain let me cut a hole in the floor of the main science lab so the botany lab on the floor below could grow trees." She gave him a cheeky grin. "I'd like to do that with the Orion, too."
Montgomery looked slightly alarmed but figured if it had been on the Republic it wouldn't matter on Orion too much. "Run it past our Chief Engineer, she'll be having the final say on the re-fit before we leave."
"I'll do that. And it's okay," she added, noting the expression on his face, "it's quite safe and has great potential for scientific research on the ship." Plus people entering the main science lab for the first time always gave it a second look.
"A sort of centrepiece" said Montgomery with a grin, "it'll look like engineering but with a great big organic warpcore" he paused and looked around the small makeshift office. He was itching to get on board Orion.
"Yea," Sam said, grinning. "That's a pretty good analogy. I'm also going to set up a secondary database for science along. It'll provide redundancy and added stability as it'll be independent of the main computer and run on its own power. So that if we have to run long-terms tests we don't drain power and we don't cause experiments to catastrophically fail because of a loss of power. Other than that, I'll be good, I promise." For now, she said silently. She really didn't mean to be a trouble maker, she just had some stuff she wanted to set up while she could.
Montgomery grinned, "Why do I get the feeling you're goin to be the cause of a lot of my headaches?" but he added quickly, "I quite agree with the database idea, if you need any help ask the Chief - if you can get any of her time in the next ten years that is!"
"I hope I'm not too big a headache." That thought made hr chuckle. "Thank you. I'll definitely have a talk with the Chief. It was nice meeting you, sir."
With a nod, Samantha turned and left his office.
