Hawkes was heading back to his quarters and as he turned the corner, he spotted his new Commanding Officer 2nd Lieutenant Raine about to press the buzzer on his door.
"Good morning, Sir." Hawkes addressed his CO.
Damon turned to see the Gunnery Sergeant walking towards him. "Convenient timing." He said with a smile.
"Gunnery Sergeant Hawkes, reporting for duty, Sir." The CO was shorter than Hawkes and had a few scars on his face. Hawkes was glad his new boss wasn't green.
"Glad to have you on-board Gunny. Your file, from the pieces I actually could get my hands on, looked very impressive." His smile changed into one of intrigue. It had taken a number of calls to some pretty influential people even to get as much as he did. He wanted to ask why that was, but quickly dissmissed the idea. If it was sealed, it was that way for a reason. "I know you aren't on duty at the moment, so I thought I would invite you to the lounge for a couple of drinks. I want to hear your ideas on training this," He paused for a moment to consider his words, "unique group of Marines. Nothing official, of course. Not yet at least."
"Brilliant idea, Sir" Hawkes smiled. "I've just given our unique group of Marines a 15 mile run around the station, there's alot of work to be done there." Hawkes reached down and patted Bella behind the ears. "And this, Sir, is Bella." he added as they headed toward the lounge.
Damon regarded the wolf with a nod. "Pleasure to have you on board Bella." He made no attempt to pet the wolf, in his experience it was better to let the dog come to you and read the signs before reaching your hand out. "Seems we already have ourselves a mascot." He said looking down the hall.
"You may not remember me, but we stomped some of the same grounds together at the start of the Dominion War. Chin'toka I think it was." Hawkes remembered his new CO well. At Chin'toka Raine pulled three Marines out of a firefight, holding back a counter-attack by himself so the Marines could withdraw.
Damon's eyes went wide with surprise. "You were at Chin'toka? Well hell, you standing here means you did better than half of the odds. What company were you with?"
"2 Pl, Alpha, 4th. Only 2 of us got out." Hawkes taps the prosthesis. "Your platoon was the first ones to reach us after the first wave attacked. We didn't stand a chance, the mortar round that took my leg off, was the first of eight that preceded the infantry attack. The medic was dragging me out when he took a round to the head. He landed on top of me and they walked right over us. I passed out during the counter attack and woke up in hospital." By the time Hawkes had finished talking they had gotten to the lounge.
Damon chose a table out of the way from the loud crewembers and sat down. He waved over the bartender before continuing with a sigh, "I remember seeing your lines get hit. It was my first real combat action and watching that left a lasting impression, I still have nightmares about it. It took almost two and a half hours to take back that land." He shook his head at the thought. "You must be one tough son of a bitch to live through that."
Hawkes just smiled and lifted his glass. "Cheers, Sir."
