The light from the computer screen flickered off. Tovan leaned back in his seat closing his eyes as he did. It felt nice that he was finally going home. A smirk appeared on his face as he realized that he called the Calypso his home. He wondered when that happened. He had been to a few ships but none of them were home. They were simply a stop that he had taken while traveling on his journey.
As he rested in the seat in the back section of the runabout he could hear the hum of the engine coming from behind the bulkhead. He wondered what was happening back on the Calypso...just what had he missed in the time he had been gone...only time would tell.
Dezzy's boredom was beginning to take over. She sat in the chair using her legs to swivel it back and forth. She hated the trips in between ships and her travel companion seemed too content to just sit. He was returning home and she was a new arrival. She let out a sigh as she continued to swivel in her chair.
The silence that had once filled the room was no more. The noise from the swirling chair quickly filled the room. The idea of taking a nap had quickly vanished from his mind. He slowly opened his eyes looking in the direction of his travelling companion.
Dezzy noticed the attention, even as slight as it was. She flashed her best smile before she spoke. "I'm sorry...was I disturbing you?"
He gently shook his head as he looked away. "No, you aren't." He added. He pushed himself out of his seat and headed towards the replicator. "Raktajino." If he wasn't going to have a chance to take a nap he better have some coffee. He turned his head in her direction. "Would you like anything?"
Dezzy simply nodded as her smile changed, " Sure...a brazaldi tea would be nice." She tapped her finger lightly on the edge of her chair as she looked over her travel companion. She made it a habit to evaluate everyone she met, whether or not she had any interest. It was as much a scientific decision as a primal one.
Tovan nodded and turned his attention away from her and back to the replicator. After both drinks had been prepared he grabbed them and headed back. He held out her drink as he approached her chair.
Taking the offered drink Dezzy immediately set it down on the table next to her. "So Commander, how long have you been gone?" She hoped that he would go along with the conversation. "From the Calypso that is?"
Tovan took a sip of his coffee. It seemed like small talk was unavoidable. After taking another sip he set the cup down and looked at her. "About seven months..." He adjusted in his seat in order to get more comfortable. "I was called to Earth for a special assignment."
"Ooo...sounds exciting." Dezzy started, there was a hint of sarcasm in her tone as she spoke. Extending her arm she retrieved her cup. She savored the sip as she looked over the Commander. "Seven months is a long time to be gone, I bet you are glad to be getting back." She could tell he wasn't thrilled at the prospect of this conversation, but for once she was doing what she wanted. She was bored.
"You can say that..." Tovan stated with a smirk on his face. He retrieved his cup of coffee and sipped at the same time as she did. However, after he was done this time he didn't place it back but simply held onto it. He looked down inside his cup. He might need another one. "So, you are the new science officer..." He stated as he looked back up at her.
"Yep thats me." Dezzy stated with a flirty grin, not that she had another kind. "I am technically an Linguistic specialist, but Starfleet Command sees fit to combine all us science people" She took a sip of her ramining drink. This time when she finished she set the cup on the table and adjusted in her seat. She crossed her legs allowing the flowy fabric of her dress to move around her.
Tovan nodded. "They do have a habit of doing that." He brought the cup to his lips. He paused for a second as he looked at her then sipped at his coffee. He had noticed that smile now on several occasions. It was a nice smile and she wore it well. Now, that his cup was empty he once again got up from his seat grabbing her cup on his way to the replicator. "Are you looking forward to your new assignment?" He asked as he placed the empty cups inside the replicator then turned to her.
"Actually yes." Dezzy stated simply. "I am looking forward to a new challenge. Granted I won't have as much time to spend with the Universal Translator, but I think I will live." She paused for a moment. "How about you? You looking forward to getting back into the swing of things?"
Tovan nodded. "Yes, I am. It will be nice to return to a familiar place. Even if most of the time all we seem to do is push paper work." He chuckled as he headed back to his seat. "Is this your first time being a department head?"
Dezzy nodded as she held the cup in her hand. "I have been an Assistant Department Head for about a year." She took a sip of her newly refilled beverage, "It isn't that I get bored easy or anything, but I found myself wanting more out of my position then covering beta shift."
"I completely understand." He stated as he took his seat. "Your new position will present its challenges. It will take some time to get adjusted to it but I have full confidence in you that you can do it." He smiled at her for probably the first since they began their conversation. "If you ever need any type of assistance please don't hesitate to find me."
"I might just take you up on that." She replied with wink. She absently tapped her fingers against the cup as she thought of what he said. "How do you have full confidence in me, you have just met me?" Her question was more to keep the conversation going, but the curiosity it brought was just an added bonus.
Tovan noticed the wink and smiled once again. He had meant it in a professional manner of course but he allowed that to just sit there. "You bring up a good point however if Starfleet didn't think you were fully capable of handling the position they would have not given you the job. Plus, I had reviewed your file before coming aboard." He grabbed the PADD from the desk and winked at her.
The fact that he was playing her game made Dezzy amused. "Well you have a valid point." She began, "I am glad to see that I will be working with such a diligent officer." She took a sip of her drink, "One of these days I am going to actually look at my file...should be an interesting read."
"Thank you. I will try not to disappoint." Tovan stated. He placed the PADD back down and then leaned back in his chair looking across the way to her. "You would think that it would be but it wasn't all that interesting really." He said with a grin on his face. It wasn't like him to come across the way he was. It must have been the coffee. Or maybe it was that the past seven months had changed him ever so slightly.
In a very immature fashion Dezzy stuck out her tongue in a playful gesture. "I have lived through my career, I know for a fact it is interesting." She feigned hurt as she spoke. Her lips slowly formed a smile as she set the cup down. It was her turn to get a bit ansy as she rose from her seat. She didn't have an end destination in mind, but she felt the need to stand. Moving to stand just a few feet from her chair. "You are right, other then one scandal there isn't much out of the ordinary about me."
Tovan couldn't honestly help but laugh as she stuck her tongue out at him. He didn't say anything in response at first simply watched her as she got up from her seat and walked a few feet away from it. "I don't think that there is anything ordinary about you, Lieutenant." Tovan said with a grin on his face as he watched her.
"Well...For a Betazoid I am pretty run of the mill." Her tone was still playful. "No special titles to speak of, I was always good at things but never great. Except languages and you can guess how useful that is among a society of telepaths." Her natural dramatic flare bubbled to the surface as she spoke. She tucked her hands behind her back as she leaned into the wall. Although she was starting to enjoy the company she was anxious for her arrival on the Calypso.
Tovan once again leaned back in his seat allowing himself to get comfortable and closed his eyes. He listened to what she had to say. "Jack of all trades...master of none..." He said as he opened his eyes moving his chair around to where he can be facing her.
"I guess you could put it that way." Dezzy replied. She looked over the man sitting in front of her as he spun his chair towards her. "So any deep dark secrets you feel like sharing with a complete stranger?" She added with a laugh.
A voice came over the intercom "I apologize for the interruption Commander, but we will be within transporter range of the Calypso in a few moments."
"Roger that..." Tovan responded to the voice the whole time looking over in the direction of his travel companion. It was going to be an interesting return home. He got up from his seat. He got saved on that one at least for the time being. "Shall we Lieutenant?"
Dezzy simply nodded in response. She couldn't help but laugh at the timing of their arrival. She had a feeling she would be getting to know Lieutenant Commander Delon Tovan. The idea was more than amusing as the interior of the USS Tarim disappeared and was replaced the transporter pad of the USS Calypso.
"Welcome back Commander." The familiar voice came from behind the console. It was Lieutenant Faye along with Chief Munro standing behind it. They both smiled as they looked at the new arrivals on the transporter pad.
"Thank you..." Tovan responded and looked over to his travel companion. "This is currently the acting Chief of Operations Lieutenant Faye and our transporter chief Mr. Munro."
Morgan walked around from behind the console. "Welcome aboard." She said with a smile on her face.
Tovan looked over at James who was his usual self.
"Thank you" Desiana replied with a simple smile. "I am Lieuenant Torel. The new Science Chief...well as soon as I speak to a Commander Raine that is."
"It's a pleasure to meet you. I believe Commander Raine is in his office at the moment." Lt. Faye said with a friendly smile on her face.
With an apprecitative nod Desiana stepped off the transporter pad. Bring the strap of her bag over her shoulder, she turned her attention to Commander Tovan. "Until next time Commander." The flirty smile on her lips was magnified by her amusement. She found Tovan intriguing and she fulling intending on finding out some of his secrets at a later time.
"Until next time Lieutenant." He said in a very professional manner. He did however return her smile with one of his own. I might not have been as flirty as hers but it was there. He had found her to be an interesting individual.
With one last glance Dezzy turned the corner as she exited the transporter room. She needed to report for duty. Once she was settled in she could find a reason to get to know the good Commander.
Morgan watched the exchange between the two of them but didn't comment on it. However, James on the other hand looked at the Commander with a grin on his face. "I think she likes you, sir."
Tovan looked over at James. "Good day, Mr. Munro." Tovan grabbed his bag from the transporter pad and headed towards the door.
Morgan looked at James and shook her head.
"What?" He gave her a dumbfound look on his face as he watched the two of them walk out of the transporter room.
