Jason swallowed hard when he was taken by surprised of the weapon drawn on them by men in uniform. He moved closer to the marines, hoping for protection. He stayed quiet, waiting for XO to say something diplomatic to ease their emotions.
[NEW]
Leroy didn't have to bark any orders, the Marines instantly formed up around the fleeters behind him. Reaching down and behind him, Leroy felt the pistol grip of the phase rifle in his right hand, while his left flexed, feeding him a knife hilt. He wanted to speak up, try and diffuse the situation, but it wasn't his time. He'd wait until he needed to attack, or he needed to defend someone else. "Sir, if you need us to, we'll hit them quick, and knock them out, on your order sir," he whispered as quietly as he could to Karma.
Suddenly a voice rang out among the crowd from everywhere and nowhere at once, indicating that it's owner knew the area well. It didn't shout but the tone carried weight, as if propelled by its own volition.
"Stay your men Captain Danjou, these people come in peace, we are obligated to return that in kind."
From the crowd materialized a man that was unremarkable in any physical sense, though at that moment his face and head was mostly obscured by a hood on his long light jacket that covered the rest of his simple but functional clothing. Reaching out to the side with one hand he seemingly lightly touched the wrist of the man he had identified as Captain Danjou, and the hand it was attached to seemingly fell away from the grip of his 23rd century era Phase Rifle.
The hood angled up in the general direction of Karma, and the hands folded in front of him at a respectful angle.
"Captain Danjou is a reliable and fine soldier, but he is still learning the ways of diplomacy and reception. Welcome to New Paris, by treaty the capitol city of Turkana IV. I am Xon, Chief Administrator for the Union of Turkana IV. Are you the erstwhile Commander York?"
Leroy took a step back, releasing the grip of his own rifle, and signaling his men to loosen up. With a twist of his wrist, the handle of the knife was gone as well. "Who are you?" he asked the man suddenly. "Except for you, we havent exactly gotten the warmest of welcomes here Sir. I know my men are edgy, so are yours. So please, to get a little, you need to give a little."
Captain Danjou growled. "You're the strangers here. Drop your weapons." He looked at Xon for further orders.
Jerry's eyes looked at the man who'd appeared, his mind and tricorder both scanning him carefully to try and figure out what he was and what he wanted. Jerry still was a little blown away by all this. All these closed minds, such anger and fear.
Before Xon addressed Leo he turned to Captain Danjou and spoke with a little more force.
"Captain Danjou, I personally selected you as the commanding officer of my personal guard for your protective instinct, but you will remember your place in the Union. I gave you an order to stand down and you will comply."
Without checking to see if Danjou had in fact complied, Xon looked back at the away team and first addressed Leo.
"I fail to understand the logic of your demand sir, as I have in fact identified myself by name and by title. Unfortunately due to the conditions on this planet I have no official object or certificate of my position or office other than the sworn statements of those present, so if official recognition of my title is what you seek then that is the full extent of confirmation that is available to you."
Then he turned to Jerry and nodded sympathetically in his direction before he spoke.
"Do not fret or worry young betazoid, things are often more complex here on Turkana IV than most other worlds, even for a talented empath as yourself. Undoubtedly the cloud of thoughts from those gathered here blunted your empathic abilities, and the nature of the machines that course through our circulatory systems allows us to blend in rather copiously with background energy readings, rendering your handheld scanning devices moot to a certain degree."
Karma had seen enough and stepped forward. "We're here on a peaceful mission. There's no need for hostilities. Is there somewhere more private we can talk?"
The hood nodded before Xon half turned and swept his arm in the direction which he had apparently taken.
"Indeed, there is what used to be a forward observation post during the Great Destruction. It's private enough, plus it appears we have more than enough security to conduct our meeting in private. Shall we Commander?"
"By all means," Karma said with a nod as he gestured for the man to lead the way.
