Samantha spent the rest of the day going over personnel files and reviewing her command staff. She needed to pick someone to take John Sheridan's place. Her first choice, Damon, wasn't a possibility, so she had to find someone she could trust and someone who would fill in the gaps in her command style.
Finally, she'd ended up with one name. Karma Sinclair. She was a little hesitant because he hadn't done very well on Tiberius IV. But since then, he had thrown himself into his command courses and done quite well.
Perhaps he would be a good fit with her in command and Damon as Second Officer.
She tapped her combadge. "York to Sinclair. Can you meet me in my office, please?"
Karma looked up from the report he'd been scanning and nodded, although she obviously couldn't see him. He scanned the rest of the report and closed down the display before walking out of his office and moving to the nearest turbolift.
A short time later, he stepped out of the lift and paused to look around the bridge. He smiled as some of the officers paused and gave him nervous looks. He acknowledged them with a nod and quickly walked to the ready room door. He pressed the chime and waited, glancing over his shoulder at the assembled officers again.
"Come in," Sam said, standing as she saw Karma walk in. "Lieutenant. Good. Have a seat."
She waited until he was seated and sat down behind her desk. "I've been looking over your records. I notice you recently passed the bridge exam."
"Yes, ma'am," Karma replied. "On my second attempt," he admitted, shifting slightly in the chair.
"It's an intimidating test, isn't it?" she said, smiling. "Congratulations." She paused for a moment, not sure how to proceed. She opted on the direct approach. "Commander Sheridan has been reassigned to Earth."
Karma looked at her and said, "That's a little sad. I didn't know him well but I know he was a good man and the crew will miss him."
"He is a good man. He'll be missed," Sam agreed. "Admiral Burke asked me to find a replacement among the crew. She felt we'd had enough upheaval lately." She slid a small box across the desk.
Karma opened the box and saw a black pip. He looked at her and said, "Does this mean what I think it means?"
"It does. I'm offering you the position of Executive Officer and a promotion to Lieutenant Commander," she said simply.
Karma looked at the box again and smiled. "I would be honored to be your Executive Officer," he said, looking at the box again.
"Excellent. Just so you know, I use Damon a great deal to bounce ideas off of. I think the three of us will be work well together."
"He's a good man and I'm sure we'll get along well enough," Karma replied with a nod. He looked at the pip again and smiled. "Maybe this will allow me to walk the corridors without seeing fear and distrust in everyone's eyes," he said, more to himself than to her. He looked at her and said, "Have you found someone to replace me in Intel yet?"
"He is a good man. I'm lucky to have him," Sam replied, smiling. It was true in more ways than one. "I haven't found a replacement for you in Intel yet, but the department should be okay until we find someone. And you can still help out from time to time if necessary.
"I can go to the base and talk to Commander Adams," Karma said thoughtfully. "And, yes, I can still lead the department until we find a suitable replacement. I have no problem with that."
"Neither do I. I'm still involved in the science department, although I've almost turned everything over to Ronnie until we get a new department head. But I still help out as needed," Sam told him. She couldn't say anything against his working in his old department as she was doing the same herself.
"Is there anything else?" Karma asked. "If not, I'd like to get to the station and talk to Commander Adams as soon as possible."
"Not at the moment. You'll need to talk to the various department heads as they'll mostly go through you, but you have plenty of time for that," she said. "For now, you're dismissed."
Karma nodded and stood up. "Thank you for your confidence in me," he said before turning to walk to the door.
