Mission:
Transitions
Location: Holodeck
Timeline: Current
Erin headed to the starbase's holodeck suites for some R&R.
Being back in dock just reminded her of the year spent working in a bar on one, and it wasn't something she particularly liked remembering.
Humming to herself, she strolled along the pavilion, looking for the entrance.
"Hello, Counselor," Karma said as he quickened his pace to catch up to her. "How are you enjoying shoreleave?"
Erin stopped momentarily and turned, grinning when she saw the Lieutenant.
''Very well.'' She replied brightly. ''As much as I love my job, its good to get a while off of the starship. How about you?''
"Taking care of a little business," Karma replied. "Where are you off to in such a hurry?"
Erin craned her neck til she saw what she was looking for.
''Ah. There.'' She pointed towards the holodeck suite's entrance.
''I was just off to some calm relaxing combat programmes. Nothing like it to calm down after a few weeks in space. Care to join me?''
"I prefer something a little less violent when I want to relax," he said to her. "But it could be interesting."
Erin shrugged. ''Not a problem, most people I meet in this quadrant seem to agree with you.'' She told him with a smile.
''Not to worry, there's thousands of programmes to chose from. If combat isn't your thing I wouldn't want to mentally scar the people who's mental health I'm responsible for. So tell me, what do you do to relax?''
"Paint and play the violin," Karma replied. "Though I do neither one very well."
Erin laughed as they reached the Holodeck door. ''I share your love for painting, but I'm unfamiliar with the violin. What kind of instrument is it?''
"It's a stringed instrument," he said to her. "It's really quite beautiful when played well."
''As most stringed instruments are.'' She agreed, fondly thinking of her guitar- the one possession she hadn't lost or broken yet.
''So if not combat, what programme do you usually run on the holodeck?''
"I usually don't spend much time on the holodecks," Karma told her. "When I do manage to find the time I usually run a camping program."
Erin raised an eyebrow. ''Now that I wouldn't have guessed. Usually people with your profile tend not to enjoy camping. Interesting.'' She grinned.
''Sorry, I tend to psychoanalyze everyone a bit too much. So camping, huh? Seeing as you've done that before, lets go crazy. There's a funfair programme here that if you haven't tried, you haven't lived.''
She turned and began searching the databanks.
"Are you going to analyze every move I make?" Karma teased as he waited for her.
''Its quite unconscious, I really don't mean it.'' She reassured him with a grin, tapping the console til the fairground materialised before them.
Bright lights, fast music and roller coasters roared by as the control arch disappeared.
''Viola. The perfect way to spend a few hours.''
Karma looked around and smiled. "What would you recommend first?"
Erin's smile turned a little dark as she pointed at the huge twisted roller coaster that screamed by over their heads.
''You up for it?'' She grinned teasingly. ''Granted, there is a few loop-the-loops. but no-ones died on it yet!''
"Yet..." Karma said, looking at the coaster. "I've never been on one of those before."
Erin looked at him seriously. ''You want to know a secret?''
She grinned. ''Neither have I. But I imagine that's what it would feel like to fly. C'mon there's a first time for everything!''
Grinning she lolloped towards the booth.
Karma shook his head and smiled as he moved to follow her.
Minutes later Erin was fixing the straps across her chest, making sure they were secure.
''Ready?'' She grinned nervously as the carriage began to move up towards the top of the holographic track, before plunging swiftly downwards.
Karma closed his eyes as the car plummeted to the bottom of the hill. He'd managed not to scream but when he opened his eyes he realized he'd grabbed Erin's hand. "Sorry," he yelled over the commotion as he realized his grip on her hand.
Erin shook her head, her eyes tightly shut.
''No problem, its a natural reaction.'' She called back, keeping a tight grip on the seat until the side was over.
''Okay.. little more violent than i anticipated.'' She admitted, scrambling out of the car.
''How you holding up?''
"That was interesting," Karma said to her. "Not sure my heart is suppose to be moving that fast but it was still fun."
''Yeah, that was probably a little too fast to be healthy but you're right, it was fun.'' Erin grinned, stretching.
''Okay, I chose one. Anything you want to go on?''
Karma took a moment to look around the area. There were so many rides to choose from. "Let's try something a little less life-threatening," he suggested, indicating a Ferris wheel not far away. "We can catch our breath and get a good look at the rest of the rides."
Erin nodded in agreement, heading off in that direction.
''Its advised to do one thing a day that scares you. Now I'm seriously doubting that advice.'' She agreed, looking up at the Ferris wheel.
"I don't know if I can handle that on a daily basis," he agreed as he moved to sit in one of the seats.
Erin shook her head. ''Probably not. But it would give me a lot of patients.'' She joked, turning to look at Karma as the ride started.
''So how has the socializing been going since we last talked?''
"Better," Karma said to her. "I ran into the ship's doctor on the holodeck and she didn't seem put off when I mentioned my position."
Erin grinned. ''Good. See? I told you there was some decent people aboard. Just need to find them is all.''
"That's one person out of how many on this ship?" Karma asked. "I have to admit, though, it was nice to talk to someone without the 'fear' I see in so many others."
Erin nodded. ''Its good to start somewhere, right?''
The Kazon looked puzzled. ''But why would people be afraid? I don't understand.''
"I can see it in their eyes," Karma said to her. "They seem to think that as an Intelligence officer I'm out to find out all their deep dark secrets."
Erin 'hmmed', chin in hand.
She almost missed the view of the carnival, she was so busy thinking.
''Then why did you become one, if they're hated?''
"It's a necessary service," he told her. "I'm good at it and it needs to be done. We can't always go around trying to do what makes everyone happy."
Erin nodded in agreement. ''Ain't that the truth.''
She shrugged. ''Its odd, people dislike intelligence officers for the same reason they LIKE counselors. Its on odd mixture. Just give the crew time, that's all.''
Karma looked at her and nodded. They were again at the top of the wheel and had a view of the entire complex. "Do you see anything else you'd like to try or have you had enough?"
Erin checked the time. ''Well I don't have much time left, but the carousel looks fascinating. Is it strange to say I've never been on one before? What about you?''
"I've never been on one either," Karma said to her, "So I guess it isn't all that strange at all."
Erin smiled. ''I have an excuse for not visiting funfairs. Whats yours?'' She teased as the ride came to a stop.
"I just never had the opportunity," Karma said as he stood up and waited for her.
''Well this is it!'' The Kazon exclaimed, bounding towards the carousel.
''Last one, I promise- but I cant resist the charm of the painted wooden horses."
Karma looked at her and smiled as he shook his head. He followed her to the ride and climbed on a white horse and waited for the ride to begin.
It was a typical carousel ride, and was over in no time, but Erin was grinning like a child.
''Wow, humans really are big into leisure aren't they?'' She commented, checking the time and frowning.
''Well that's my time up. Thanks for the company, Karma.''
"It was my pleasure," he said to her. "It was good to get out and do something."
