Kalyka had two racquets and a ball in her hands, waiting for Karma to show up. She was wearing casual workout clothes, not too tight, but not so loose that it would get in the way. Her hair was pulled back into a low ponytail, but already bits of it were falling into her grey eyes.
She smiled as she saw Karma walk up. "Hey, Karma. Ready?"
"Hi," Karma said to her as he walked up to her. "I guess so," he added, looking at the racquets in her hands.
She handed him a racquet and walked in. The room was set up like a racquetball court with many targets over the walls and floor. "You toss the ball up and hit it towards one of the targets. When you miss a target, you lose that round. Ten rounds per game. Understand it okay?"
Karma looked around the room and nodded. "I think so," he said to her.
Kalyka bounced the ball a couple times before throwing it up and hitting it squarely onto the target in front of her. It headed straight for Karma.
Karma swung at the ball and missed. He looked at her then at the ball as it bounced against the wall. "I don't think that was suppose to happen. Maybe you gave me a defective racquet."
Kalyka retrieved the ball. "Don't give up so easily. Follow the ball with your eyes and watch as you hit the ball with your racquet." She started the game again and hit it towards the one in front of them, giving Karma a good shot again.
Karma watched the ball and swung the racguet. He hit the ball and watched as it hit one of the targets.
"Good job!" Kalyka cried out. She swung her own racquet and hit it towards the side because that's where she could get it to hit a target and it went towards the other side of her that Karma was not on.
Karma swung at the ball again and hit it. He watched as it flew at the wall and missed the targets. "Damn," he said, looking at her. "This is hard."
Kalyka smiled at him. "Don't worry. It just takes practice. Ready to try again?"
Karma wiped a bead of sweat off his forehead before nodding at her. "Ready," he said to her.
She threw the ball up and hit it towards the target, hitting it a little off center.
Karma ran to the side and hit the ball again, hitting the target and angling it away from her.
She ran to get it, hit it with a backhand, and it went directly towards Karma.
Karma saw the ball and tried to move out of the way. He ducked, and realized too late that he moved straight into its path. He fell to the floor and put his hand on the side of his face. "You that scared of me already?" he asked teasingly, looking up at her.
Kalyka tried to keep from laughing. "You're supposed to hit the ball, not run from it."
Karma looked at her and started laughing. "I did hit it," he said to her.
That got Kalyka laughing. "Yeah, and then you ran from it the second time it came towards you. That was a great shot to have!"
Karma continued to laugh as he stood up. "I didn't know we were suppose to aim for each other," he said looking at her. "I'll have to keep that in mind," he added with a wink.
Kalyka shook her head. "You don't do it intentionally, you just aim for the easiest target to hit. Care to try a fourth time?"
Karma smiled at her and said, "I'm ready when you are."
She tossed it in the air again and hit it at the one in front of her, but it went to the other side. She hoped Karma would get to it in time.
Karma ran for the ball and hit it behind him. He wasn't sure where it went because he was too busy trying to keep from hitting the wall.
Kalyka ran towards the ball and hit it behind her, to Karma's left, towards the target on that side. It came towards Karma in a golden shot.
Karma turned and saw the ball coming at him. He swung at it and hit it toward one of the lower targets.
Kalyka ran to the side and hit it hard to the side, making it come to Karma's left.
Karma ran for the ball and swung at it but missed. He stumbled to the ground and tried to catch his breath as he stood up. "I never realized how out of shape I am."
Kalyka caught the ball and came over to stand beside him. "Tell you what. Three more goes and I'll buy you dinner." They both knew that there really was nothing to 'buy' but rather that she would go to Ten Forward with him.
Karma looked at her and smiled. "I think dinner is the least you can do after this brutality," he teased as he moved into position.
Kalyka raised her eyebrows at that. "My, aren't we confident." She served the ball and hit it to the right, a little to Karma's right.
Karma had started to say something but stopped as he ran to hit the ball. He hit it back at the targets and saw it bounce in a high arc, knowing it wasn't going to end well for him.
Kalyka watched it go, then it came right at her head. She swatted at it and hit it towards the wall and it came right at Karma's lower torso. She winced. She knew how this was going to end...
Karma saw it coming and knew there was nothing he could do. He braced himself and turned to the side as best he could. The ball bounced off his hip and he winced. "I think I've had enough," he said to her.
Kalyka ran to him. "You okay? I thought it was going to catch you somewhere else."
"I'm fine," he said to her. "I just think it's time we call it quits for the day."
Kalyka picked up the ball from where it had stopped and helped him up. "Where did you want to have dinner? Mess or the Locker?"
"I think the Locker would be better," Karma said to her.
"Okay, do you want to go there first or Sickbay for that bruise?"
Karma looked at the bruise and smiled. "I don't mind getting something to eat first."
Kalyka smiled. "Alright." They left and headed to the Locker as friends.
