Mission:
Transitions
Location: Holodeck 1, Starbase Typhon
-ON-
Erin hurtled through the bushes, her bare feet pounding through the compact dirt and small shrubs on the holodeck, inches ahead of the snarling creature that sped along after her, snapping visciously.
The Kazon picked up speed despite the pounding in her lungs and reached the starting steps of an ainceint starcase carved into the side of the mountain, over the lush jungle of her favorite holodeck simm.
Scrambling breathlessly up the first few steps, she grinned at the creature below, trying in vain to make it up after her.
After resting, she made her way up to her favorite place, the hilltop overlooking the steep drop where a waterfall plunged to the depths of the forest below.
Humming to herself, the kazon sat on a rock and watched the sun turn the sky pink.
Suddenly the beast stopped making noise, which vaguely sounded like the hiss and click of a hatch shutting. In an act of cosmic turnabout, Kaj Mikkola had walked into a rather risky holodeck program, only this time he was the one in harms way rather than Erin.
Kaj had been looking for Erin, and was distracted by the beauty of the environment and subsequently had not noticed the rather large furry fanged beast in front of him until it made a rather menacing low noise. Immediately Kaj looked at the source of the noise....
It was safe to say that Kaj was well-versed when it came to danger. He had survived the Dominion War, getting close not only with various spacecraft but in hand to hand fighting numerous times. However one thing Kaj was very much not accustomed to was being in close proximity to large and dangerous creatures without some sort of weapon to at least give him a small chance, so to say he was a bit nervous would have been a galactic understatement to say the least.
Without even a wayward blink and the scenery very much gone, Kaj felt behind him for the hatch, but if there were deities of inconvenience they had in fact chosen to work at that moment and the entry arch had disappeared, leaving nothing but breezy air behind him.
In typical understated fashion, the only words that Kaj could manage were "Aw crap..''
The beast circled, snarling. Its long yellow fangs could have easily ripped open a mans chest and as the circles grew tighter it was dangerously close to Kaj.
With an explosive bark,, the creature lunged furiously.
For his own part Kaj was locked into focus with the creature, and the millisecond it lunged he threw himself sideways, landing hard on the ground. However the momentary discomfort was negated quickly by the thought of those huge fangs and Kaj quickly got up and started running flat-out to get away from the beast. However the crashing and roaring behind him was a clear indicator that the current tactic he was using would not be successful.
Suddenly he remembered a trick the Marines had shown him during a siege to avoid being hit when caught in the open. Planting one foot he suddenly changed directions, ran for a few seconds then repeated the action in the opposite direction, hoping that the zig-zag tactic would thrown the creature off
The creature was seemingly agile for its bulk and changed tack almost as fast as Kaj did, obviously used to chasing down fast prey.
It let out a howl as it closed in on the pilot. Usually the howl was used to summon others from the pack to come and help with the hunt, but thankfully only one dangerous animal had been programmed into the sim.
Erin had been settling on the rock for a nap when the howling from below started up again.
''Odd.'' She sat up lazily, raising an eyebrow at the small speck of a person far below that was being chased by the beast.
''Shit.'' She jumped up, throwing herself down the steps, racing for the bottom as fast as she could.
This was not good.
''That safeties are off!!!!'' She yelled, stumbling over a rock on the way down. ''The safeties are off!!!''
Kaj yelled over his shoulder as much as he could and subsequently found new speed when he observed just how close the creature was.
"Oh that's great now freeze the damn program before I become holo-beast kibble!"
Despite herself, Erin grinned throwing herself off of the last few stone steps and hitting the ground running.
''Computer, freeze programme, the nice man's scared.'' She called teasingly.
The scene froze and the beast, inches from Kaj's leg, stalled in mid-lunge.
''Erase beast programmes.'' She told the computer and with a beep the beast disappeared back into pixels.
''Heights.'' She said conversationally, as if he should have known. ''They cant climb, head to high ground.''
She folded her arms, suddenly aware that she was just wearing a simple short Kazon-style toga. Good for running, not good for company.
''So this time its my simm that nearly kills you. Any reason your lurking around the holodecks at this time in the morning?'' She asked with a grin.
Normally Kaj would have noted the rather unique clothing and would have said something, but at that moment he was doubled over and trying to catch his breath in spite of the sudden cardiovascular workout, adrenaline, and other biophysical reactions that went into suddenly being accosted by a saber-toothed gopher, or at least that was his best assessment during his attempt to get away from it.
"First off... at least I had a bit.....of control in my program....just what....the hell.... was that thing?!"
The exclamation seemed to have helped him catch his breath, because he managed to look in Erins direction then stand up rather suspiciously smoothly, and even if he hadn't switched gears all of a sudden the look in his eyes coupled with the slight grin in the corner of his mouth and a subtle raising of one of his eyebrows certainly gave away what he was thinking at that point, although he didn't outright admit it.
"And I was actually looking for you. I had some downtime and was going to brush up on my EVA skills. Thought you might like to tag along, but I see you're a bit busy to say the least."
Kaj brushed a bit of simulated dirt and bits of plant off of his yellow and black 103rd Fighter Squadron t-shirt and gray relaxed fit dura-fiber pants that he was wearing.
"Well, I'll leave you to it, this seems a helluva lot more exciting than EVA ops but it's your program after all...."
As he spoke he slightly angled towards the door, not actually leaving or staying, as if he was caught in the middle for some reason.
''Thats an Ah'fraa'hk'' Erin nodded to the place where the creature had been. Delta quadrant specialty, mostly in Kazon space. Good for roasting.''
She glanced toward the door and back to Kaj, considering.
''Well since you came all this way looking, why not stay?'' She suggested with a shrug.
''I did nearly have you killed by my furry friend over there, the least I can do is show you around...''
Kaj stroked his chin for a moment. Granted in a few hours he would be on his way to enough spills thrills and insanity, but that was of a different nature. Besides, the opportunity to spend time with Erin dressed in something a bit more provocative and fun than a standard starfleet uniform was too good to pass up.
"Alright, but if I'm gonna stick around I'm at least going to at least give myself something more for self defense other than my mitts. Computer, Alphan Kpinga with sheath and bandoleer."
Kaj held out his hand as a new object materialized, eventually taking shape in the form of a cross-strap and sheath with what at first looked like a two foot long blade of some sort. However, after Kaj threw the cross-strap over his shoulder he unsheathed the weapon it was clear that this was a different weapon, with only 6 inches of the total length being a rather simple looking but robust blade, and the rest being a long 18 inch handle made of some sort of black wood that was mostly wrapped with some sort of brown hide.
Turning it over a few times in his hand he re-sheathed it with a grin.
"There, now I feel somewhat safer. So fem-Tarzan, what is this place, doesn't look like anyplace Ive ever been."
Erin spun around and threw her arms in the air, a sweeping gesture at the rocky jungle cliffs to one side, and the slow folieage buildup to thick forest on the other from the mini-desert they were standing on now.
''This is a mesh of all the planets I lived on as a child. The Halik sect moved around a lot from planet to planet to keep the children safe from the battles till they were old enough.'' She explained, pointing at different landmarks.
'' The mountains from one, deserts from another and jungle from yet another. It means I can just sit back in my own environment for awhile.''
She shrugged, looking down. '' Its hard to feel at home when home is years away and years ago, but here is my own little sanctuary!''
The kazon grinned deviously at Kaj.
''Bet you've never went waterfall diving, huh?''
Kaj looked at Erin with the same grin that flashed across his face before the two went flying at breakneck speeds through canyons.
"I've been cliff diving, but never waterfall diving. Lead the way, sounds like a lot of fun.''
Erin grinned and raced towards the stone steps again, scrambling up them with practiced ease and waited for him at the top. It was a good 10 minutes climb for an experienced hiker, but the alien was so used to the way she could have done it blindfolded.
Although Kaj wasn't nearly as graceful or practiced in his own ascent stubborn pride and willpower wouldn't let him fall behind, at least not too far. Besides, if he did he would miss Erins graceful movements as she ascended. She was no longer a starfleet officer in that moment, but a creature in her element and something truly wonderful to behold. She had mentioned during their first encounter that him in the cockpit was his natural element, but he knew that sort of thing paled in comparison to the physical display Erin was putting on at the moment.
A few minutes later, standing at the precipice of a roaring waterfall that poured from the rocks beneath their feet, Erin turned to Kaj.
''All right Natch, the rules are very simple: go limp and avoid the rocks at the bottom.''
Without a word of warning she jumped off of the waterfall, pulling Kaj with her, down into the swirling mammoth whirlpool below.
Unfortunately Kaj could only comply with one of those instructions. Erin had managed to catch him off guard and rather than the traditional head or feetfirst graceful dive that would have worked, Kaj managed to hit the water on his shoulders, knocking the breath right out of him.
Still, Kaj being Kaj he managed to find his bearings quickly in the weightless environment of water, and after a quick orientation he quickly stripped off the Kpinga and his shirt, then swam like hell for the surface.
Breaking the surface with a loud intake of breath, he treaded water as he looked around. Shouting just as much to be heard over the volume of the waterfall as much as his already-elevated adrenaline, pivoted looking for Erin.
"A little heads up would have been nice! What's next, getting shot at by raiders!?"
Erin surfaced a few feet away, shaking the water out of her braiding and gasping for air as she laughed.
''Should have seen... the look on... your.. face..'' She coughed, shoulders shaking in glee, swimming towards him.
''Geez, you really ARE a pilot. One waterfall dive and you loose your shirt. You fellas just cant keep your kit on can you?'' She grinned, raising her eyebrows.
''And no, the raiders are next week.''
Kaj looked at Erin with a mixture of disbelief and approval hiding laughter written all over his face.
"Oh yeah, start waving a big stick at me and ill drop trow completely. And your diagnosis of insanity MUST be earned through experience cause lady, you are NUTS! You stay over there, you have that drowning look in your eyes."
And with that Kaj playfully splashed Erin with the cool water, letting the held laughter come out.
''Hey, its an excuse to hang out with other crazy people.'' Erin grinned, splashing back.
''And don't worry, the amount of caffeine in your system would make drowning you nearly impossible, you addict.''
She swam to the shore and hauled herself out, trying to keep her wet clothing from clinging to her legs.
''Don't look, you.''
Kaj held up one hand as he finally found footing in the water.
"I won't, promise."
However the other hand was submerged and had every finger possible crossed. Consequently when he covered his eyes with both of his hands he left plenty of gaps to peer through, as well as tried to negate giving away what he was doing by biting his bottom lip.
Erin wrung her clothes dry and stretched.
''You're a terrible actor.'' She said wryly, not even looking over her shoulder. She has studied human behavior enough to know what someone was going to do if a woman in a wet short dress got out of a pool.
''If that's how much you think promises are worth I'll be sure to disregard any future ones.'' She turned with a grin.
''So had enough of an oggle or should I do it again?'' She added with a mocking grin.
Kaj returned his own grin, but the telltale look in his eyes was becoming more and more easy to identify.
"Oh I could, only if you're offering though."
He rose out of the water finally, creating a min-waterfall of his own even as he struggled to get his boots off.
"And I am a terrible actor, but in this case it was only because you're too attractive to pass up on looking at Urk!"
In his zeal to get his wet heavy boots off Kaj managed to loose his balance and during the fall grabbed Erin. Quickly realizing his mistake he shifted their relative positions so at least when they hit she would land on something softer than rock, namely him.
Erin wasn't really sure what was happening until they hit the ground with a soft thud.
She braced for the fall, but ended up smacking her shoulder off of a substance softer than the ground, which, when she opened her eyes, turned out to be Kaj's chest.
''Oh very smooth. Lets hope you fly better than you walk.'' She was in the middle of teasing when she realized how close their faces were and her smile froze.
Kaj had noticed the same thing and his grin was also frozen right where it was plastered. However whether it was primal urge or something more spiritual, the rest of Kaj didn't just stay put. His hands unshakably found Erins hips then led his arms to embrace her by her waist and the small of her back, and his face came slowly but steadily towards Erins as his eyes closed.
Erin didn't even think. Her hands found their way to his back and the nape of his neck and she pushed their mouths together, pushing him backwards a little and leaning into him slightly.
Somehow she doubted this was a good idea, but primal Kazon instinct was hard to stifle.
Kaj was surprised but excited by Erins enthusiasm, and when their lips met it felt to him like a searing flame was lit throughout his body, a flame that seared every inch of him with tingling desire for this woman. At first the kiss was soft enough, but it only took moments for his absolute hunger for her to prompt him into a much deeper and passionate kiss.
Erin kissed him back heartily, feeling something that she hadn't felt in quite a while as she kissed Kaj, deepening the kiss.
The holographic skies above rumbled and began to rain but she barely noticed the soft drops hitting her skin.
One of her hands found the way to his chest, resting on it slightly as the other still gripped the back of his neck.
She was breathing quite hard when they broke for air a few minutes later.
''Well this was unexpected.'' Her grin was a little lopsided, but she hadn't actually moved away.
Kaj's hands had done their own exploring and one ended up resting on the back of one of Erins thighs and the other one was in her hair. His own grin tugged at the corners of his mouth but his face still conveyed the same desire.
"Yeah it was...sorta..."
There was a slight flicker in Kaj's eyes. There was something that wanted to be said but was being blocked somewhere between his brain and his vocal chords.
Erin leaned in, grinning.
''Say it.'' She prodded, looking intently at the pilot.
''Your eyes say that you're hiding something.''
Mostly thanks to Kaj, her braid had come undone and she tried to sweep her stubborn hair back into order as she spoke.
''Dont worry, I wont psychoanalyze, this hardly counts as a psychiatrists session.''
Kaj finally grinned a little, running his fingers through Erins hair with his hand that was already there as he spoke and looked into her eyes.
"One doesn't refuse women such as you now do they?"
Kaj chuckled before continuing.
"Look, we have a lot of fun together, between the random lunches and dinners together or just taking a break and chatting when on duty, I've always enjoyed spending time with you for those reasons and more. I'd be lying if I said I didn't notice the way your hips swivel when you walk, or that utterly primal look in your eyes that's there when you're not on duty which is intoxicating."
Kaj's one hand moved from Erins hair to cup the side of her face, and the one on her thigh started to caress her skin with his fingertips. As he summed it up he gazed into Erins face, the grin melting away as the words finally came forward.
"Basically I've been attracted to you since nearly the moment we met. You're beautiful and upbeat and always free somehow, and I doubt I could ever get enough.''
Erin sat back, wide-eyed. That was not what she had expected. Yet somehow, it wasn't a bad thing either.
A little smile tugged on her lips and before she knew it she was trying to stop herself outright laughing.
''I'm sorry, its not you.'' She eventually choked out, biting the insides of her mouth to stay serious.
''Its just... I've never heard a human say a Kazon was beautiful before. Which is weird...'' She looked up at him through half-closed eyes. ''..because you're one of the only humans I've found attractive.''
She looked at him, her grin fading. ''Lets just say that I promised myself ten years ago that I'd never ... get attached physically or any other way to any other race but my own. And now it has, and... somehow I don't really mind.''
Kaj had been worried when Erin sat up and gone wide-eyed, then started to get perturbed when she started to laugh. But after her explanation he chuckled and smiled, then sat up, gently holding her by her hips and kissing her sole exposed shoulder before giving her a soft little kiss on her lips and speaking again.
"Yeah, funny thing about those promises to yourself they tend to get broken, and the more rigorous or specific they are the quicker they're broken.
I'm glad you don't mind but why the draconian edict of not getting involved with anybody that isn't Kazon? It seems awfully lonely to do things that way. And I'm glad somebody finally called you what you are, you're definitely beautiful, but then again I am biased."
Erin looked at the man seriously. ''From my sect alone, we only have 15 Kazons left in this quadrant.'' She voiced something that had never been said to an outsider before.
"Before we left our home on the sleeper ships, there was a large battle brewing- tensions between most of the sects were reaching a limit, and the Halik sect was severely outgunned by the Olga and the Relora. 15% chance of survival. Even the survivors would be grounded with broken ships and wounded.
For all we know, we're the last of our sect in the universe- that means I'm one of 6 female Kazons. Getting attached to outsiders ... could mean the end of our sect altogether.''
She looked up at Kaj, reading his response.
''It might be lonely, but I cant let the bloodline die out, right?''
Kaj's face screwed up with trying to empathize but that route quickly became fruitless. Try as he might he knew very well that there were some things that he couldn't relate to directly when it came to what Erin had told him. Still, he could at least try on a personal level.
"Maybe, but maybe not. There was a point in human history where supposed bloodline purity was an issue. Laws were passed prohibiting two people with different skin tones from so much as having anything more than a friendly relationship of any kind let alone marrying of having children. It took awhile but eventually we learned, and we learned to get over some xenophobic fears later on too."
Kaj stopped himself from going into a long history lesson.
"The point is I understand how strong historical and ethnic ties can be, god knows my grandmother wanted me to settle down with a nice Finnish girl not long after I turned 21, but at some point you have to respect your own heritage but go your own damn way. Its hard but you don't need a counselor to know that you have to do things that feel right, even if they're not correct."
Erin nodded. ''You're right. But its a little different for us. Kazons were bred in war, Kaj. The fact that we ran makes us traitors. Hell, even WE see ourselves as traitors. Letting our sect die out is too much insult towards our families.''
''That's why THIS is technically wrong.'' She leaned forward and kissed the pilot.
''But I have about an hour before the guilt kicks in, lets make the most of it.''
She kissed him again and grinned.
''If it means anything, I'm glad you've no hot Finnish wife in the wings.''
Kaj returned Erins kiss, then started to play with the flimsy material of the toga at her hips.
"I agree on both counts, and I'm glad you don't have some brutish...mate... in the wings, might turn out worse for me than for you in that regard."
Erin chuckled. ''Oh probably.'' She pushed him gently unto his back, straddling his hips properly and let her hands roam over his chest as she kissed him, longer this time.
Kaj's hands roamed up Erins hips and sides, peeling her wet toga off of her as they went. The intense burning desire re-ignited again and Kaj responded with intensifying their kiss.
The rain increased and Erin could feel it drumming down her spine. Her hands roamed down further, unbuckling Kaj's belt and 'helping' him undress as much as he was helping her.
''Not how I imagined this to end up as.'' She grinned in between kisses.
Kaj shifted a little, he hadn't imagined it turning up this way either but then again he didn't pre-plan this sort of thing, just went with it as it came.
"I've always thought that in matters like this imagination was best left to more...immediate needs."
He couldn't tell which was more exhilarating, the feel of Erins slick skin being slowly revealed by his fingertips or her own activity with her hands, either way it was exciting.
Erin shuddered as the feel of her skin against his sent pleasant shocks through her nerves.
Abandoning all logic and thought she just gave in to the moment, not wanting to miss out.
The rain continued to fall, and they symphony of the raindrops hitting various surfaces was joined by the calls of many of the simulated jungle creatures, and somewhere in that symphony Erin and Kaj's own noises fit in. At first they were distinct but quickly became just as primal as the rest of the symphony around them.
Some time later the two were still in that clearing by the river, only with much less clothing on and entwined in each others embraces. Kaj kissed Erins nose and brushed some of her hair back as he sighed.
"Wow, how did you do that thing, you know with the ankles and hips..."
Erin chuckled sleepily, the endorphins still buzzing around her brain, one of her hands was stroking his hair.
''You know, I have honestly no idea. Its a well-known fact that Kazons are more adventurous but I was never thought that one. Glad you liked it though.''
She grinned, propping herself up on her elbows.
''This may sound very manly, but I'm starving. Computer, run backup programme 34r4a please.'' There was a beep and a plate of sandwiches appeared in front of them.
She offered him the plate, grinning guiltily. ''Sorry to ruin the mood but...Sandwich?''
Kaj sat up and shifted an incredulous look between Erin and the materialized sandwiches before finally grinning and kissing her on the lips softly before taking a sandwich and taking a big hearty bite. Hungry as he was as well he wasn't a complete animal and made sure he swallowed before
"Ruin it? I was gonna suggest something similar, but in deference to the surroundings and what it means to you I was going to go with something more... native? But this is perfect, hits the spot, plus sharing it with you makes it that much better."
For awhile Kaj said nothing, just munched on sandwiches next to Erin while his fingertips caressed up and down her naked back. Eventually though another thought came into his head, and by now he had learned enough that Erin would get it out of him anyway if he didn't say it immediately.
"So you know this is the last time we'll see each other for a few days, I have that enduro race on that jungle moon, and I know you have a few things you're up to as well although you know you're more than welcome to come and watch if you can make it...
I just hope this won't be awkward for us, this intimacy to near immediate separation thing."
Erin munched on the sandwich quietly, thinking.
''Oh it most defiantly will.'' She assured him. ''Stuff like this usually is, but I can get past arkward.'' She grinned a lopsided smirk.
''And yeah, if no-one on the ship goes crazy and tries to drown themselves in mint julep, I think I'll be able to make the race.''
She looked at him intently for a few seconds. ''I was right about you.'' She mused. ''You didn't seem to be a 'notch-on-the-bedpost- kind of guy. But its hard to tell with pilots.'' The Kazon chuckled.
''Even if it is arkward, I'm glad you said something.'' She smiled at him.
''Just for the record, I've enjoyed our random chats and lunches too.''
Kaj rolled his eyes and adopted a mock tone of frustration for a moment.
"Oh for the last time, it's navigator, I do more than just punch buttons and steer the ship wherever the skipper tells me. You do that just to get back at me for calling you a headshrinker once in awhile don't you?"
Kaj snickered then leaned in and planted a kiss on Erin's neck, reveling in both the physical and the emerging emotional closeness between them.
"To be honest, more than one of those random meals together weren't totally random, I've kinda gotten an general timeframe of your general schedule and altered mine a bit, although to be fair I also wanted to cut down on spending as much time as I normally do with the engineers. They're good people but god almighty you get them started on tech..."
Erin nodded. ''I had noticed. I pulled up everyone timetables to make sure no-one was being overworked or stressed, and I did notice some recent changes in yours.''
She suddenly grinned.
''And yes, Engineers are great people at their jobs, and decent conversationalists but I really dont want to hear about how much they love their hyperspanners.''
The Kazon stretched and grinned again. ''Well your grandmother is'nt going to be happy. Rolling around in a holographic jungle with an alien... not exactly married to a sweet Finnish girl, huh?''
Kaj chuckled and rolled his neck a little.
"Well if either of them were alive I might get a funny look from either of them if they knew, but then again I have a cousin who married a lovely Denobulan woman recently so who knows.
And what of your clan-mates, wouldn't they frown upon this kind of interaction with a non-warrior outsider?"
Suddenly Kaj's arms went to Erins waist and the two went back down, this time with Erins back against the ground with Kaj gazing into her eyes and his hands at her hips.
"You know, I rather like the sound of that whole rolling around deal."
Erin sighed. ''Oh yes, they'd be absolutely furious.'' She rolled her eyes.
''Fraternizing with an outsider.... weakening the bloodline..... starfleet has changed you.... what of Rha'an, he needs a mate......'' She mimicked an angry male Kazon's voice.
''But you know what, they can go and- whaa-!?''
She found herself on the ground, looking up at Kaj quicker than she could blink.
''Oh do you now...'' She braced herself, ready to flip them over again when she had the chance.
''Is this how pilots seduce women, tackling them?'' She teased, her hands moving up to his shoulders.
Kaj grinned, lettings his fingers gently stroke Erins thighs and hips.
"Nope, usually it involves flying less than a hundred feet off the deck and upside-down, with your knees, and that's just the start of the foreplay."
The half grin returned as Kaj leaned down, drawing their faces closer yet again.
Erin grinned, waiting til their lips brushed before suddenly twisting, rolling them over again so she was on top, teasingly holding her lips just out of reach.
Kaj grinned as he gazed into Erins eyes, finding that primal look that was there earlier. His hands started to seeminlgy roam on their own, although in the back of his mind he was keeping track of what noises were elicited when his hands went where.
"Hmm, is this because you have an innate desire to dominate, or is it another fun little trait of yours I have yet to discover?"
Erin grinned. ''Neither. Kazons are simply a little rougher than humans.''
Her grin turned a little dark. ''Hope you're up for that.''
Kaj's own grin deepened a little, a good indicator of things to come.
"Huh, well I would say do your worst but I get the feeling that was coming my way regardless. As they say on my homeworld, open the solar sails and hang on."
And with that Kaj craned his neck up to kiss Erin passionately and deeply, simultaneously executed with his hand gently but firmly grabbing the back of her hair and holding on.
Erin kissed him back roughly, yet at the same time making sure she did'nt hurt him.
Her hands tightened on his shoulders, pulling them closer together. The Kazon started moving her hips ever so slightly against his.
Things would have to be worked out and figured out later of course, most importantly whether or not the fire between them was the hot and fast-burning type or if there was enough fuel to go the distance. However for that moment in time that to him was far too short, it wasn't even on Kaj's mind. Their surroundings may have been as false as a proverbial three dollar bill but Erin was very much real and commanded all of his attention through the sheer force of her passion, something that swept Kaj up and carried him along for the ride.
