Samantha made her way to the security offices. She wanted to meet the Chief. She'd seen him briefly on the bridge, but as they would be working together from time to time she wanted to have a chance to chat with him a bit.
She walked up to his office and rang the door chime.
Nartu was reorganizing his office from his "visit" from Lieutenant Adeyemon two nights previous. He hadn't gotten a chance to check out his office again since that night. He heard the chimes and was startled by it. He paused for a moment, and then responded:
"Come in, please."
Samantha walked in and took a quick look around the office. "Hi," she said cheerfully. "Do you have a minute?"
Binjole looked up at the beautiful officer:
"Sure. What type of Department Head would I be if I didn't?"
He gestured towards a vacant seat in front of his desk:
"Would you like to sit down?"
Sam chuckled t his reply and sat down. "I'm Samantha York. I thought I'd stop by and say hi." She looked over at the tall Cardassian. "I like to get to know the people I'll be working with."
Binjole could tell immediately that he liked the Lieutenant.
"Well, my bio does cover a lot, but what would like you to know? Or more importantly, tell me about yourself."
Sam chuckled. "How about, I tell you something and you tell me something and then we'll both be the wiser?" She paused for a moment. "If you've read my bio, you know I'm primarily an archaeologist and historian. I also collect old books. Print books. The older the better."
Nartu was intrigued: "Interesting. Well, I am an avid fan of the Earth rock 'n' roll star Elvis…"
He motioned towards his hair: "I bet you could already tell that, though."
He laughed then continued:
"I enjoy a good glass of k'nar or as I found out earlier, a bottle of Earth Coca-Cola. And I enjoy serving both the interests of the Federation, Starfleet, and Cardassia."
"Ah, yes. As someone raised on Earth, I appreciate Coca Cola, although I prefer Dr. Pepper, personally. I also appreciate Elvis. He, along with Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Barry changed the way Terrans made music. Elvis deserves his title of 'The King of Rock and Roll' in my opinion." She had noticed his pompadour. Now she understood why he wore his hair in one.
Nartu nodded in agreement: "However, when the Beatles hit the scene with their appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in the year I believe……1964 I think they changed the way popular music was made. Besides Elvis, I quite enjoy them. Three part vocal harmonies, complex bridges and guitar riffs, they are very fascinating both to study and to listen to. Even though I personally prefer Elvis over the Beatles, I enjoy them both. Cardassian music is so, well, bland. My people have been warriors for so long our arts and culture have suffered unfortunately."
Sam nodded. "That can be a common side-effect to a warrior culture. A people become too focused on war and they lose part of their sensitivity. That is reflected in their arts. The arts change to reflect the warrior mentality."
Nartu agreed: "Which is interesting, since Klingon art and music is some of the more unique compostions I've seen".
"Yes, it is. But it does tend to reflect a more warlike approach to life," she said.
Nartu was thoroughly enjoying this conversation, however he remembered he had a Department Meeting in 10 minutes that he had to prepare for.
"My apologies, Lieutenant, but I just remembered I have a Security Meeting in 10 minutes. I would love it if you could stay and chat, but I must get ready for it. How about off-duty, around maybe 1500 in the Lounge?"
Sam thought about it for a moment, mentally reviewing her schedule. "I can do that. I'll see you later, then." She stood, shook the Ensign's hand, and left his office.
