Mission:
Prelude: Blowing away the Cobwebs
Location: Chief of Security's Office
Alex walked gleefully down the corridor. Her hips swayed in both a sensual and joyful way. The corridors were still pretty much empty, so she could sing a song quitely without making a fool of herself.
When she reached the Security department, she walked past the people who were working and straight up to Nartu's office door. She rang the chime gently and waited for an answer.
Nartu had replicated a bottle of Romulan Ale, had changed into his dress uniform, and had slicked back his hair like his idol Elvis. He was thinking about whether to play music for the Lieutenant or not, and what type. He had developed a taste for 1950s Earth rock n roll, but he wasn't sure what Alex preferred. However, he had also replicaed a bouquet of flowers with a nano tracker (just so he could have an excuse if she was put off by the gesture).
'Wow' he thought, 'this looks more like my quarters than my office. Geez, what men do for the opposite sex. Well, let's hope she feels the same way about me that I do her'.
When he heard the chimes, he flinched a bit.
"Come in."
How could she describe what she felt when she walked into that office? It was both shock and...flattery. She didn't expect all this, and again, she didn't know what to say. For once in her life, she wasn't even smiling because she was so confused. She arched a perfectly shaped eyebrow at the man. He was certainly not like any Cardasian shed ever met....she liked it, and...is that an Elvis hair style?...."Wow.." Was all she said. It came out breathlessly.
Nartu didn't know what to say either as he stood up:
"Um, yeah. Thanks." He laughed nervously, looking down at his feet.
There was a brief pause, in which both of them never spoke, then Nartu broke the silence:
"Um, oh, I almost forgot."
He bent down behind his desk and produced the replicated bouquet of flowers. He offered them to Alex.
"I just replicated this for you. I hope you don't mind roses, because I couldn't find anything else that could flatter your complexion."
Her natural smile finally came back as she took the flowers and held them to her nose. "Awe..that's so sweet! Thank you!" She was impressed. Most guys that dared to ask her out were overconfident jerks, but he seemed quite nice. Not that this is a date...or is it? He sure made it seem like a date, what with the flowers and such.
Nartu was nervous and wasn't sure what to say.
"So, um, you like them." He smiled sheepishly.
She nodded. "Very much." She looked around. "This certainly is elaborate. I've never had anyone do anything like this for me before. Not this much at least."
Nartu shrugged:
"Well, I try. So, um, would you like anything to eat or drink? My replicator can make almost anything. Not that it's any different from yours or anyone else's, of course."
He smiled again.
Technically, she was still on duty for anouther 10 minutes, but she shrugged. There was nothing wring with a little bit of fun. "Um...sure. Not too sure what I want though. Do you have anything in mind?"
Nartu was waiting for that precise question and he jumped on it:
"Yeah, sure! How about some K'nar? I had some of your crewman modify my replicator to make it. It's a delicacy among my people."
"that sounds great." She said as she watched him get up. "So, I assume you've got a good look at your department so far?"
"Well, yeah, I guess. Unfortunately, I charged my Security Investigations Officer with insubordination because not only did he refuse to comply with my orders, but he yelled, scolded, and almost lectured me, his superior officer. I've seen plenty of Cardassians in my time, most with better manners than Getal. I keep asking myself how he even passed the Academy. But, that's none of your concern. Here, I'll get the K'nar."
He walked over to the replicator:
"Computer, two glasses of k'nar, 3 degrees celcius."
As the beverages and their glasses materialized, Nartu felt a sudden surge of confidence. He spoke up:
"I hope you like it cold, because on Cardassia Prime, it's a premium because of our hot climate. A cold drink for me brings back memories of both Cardassia and oldy of Quark's Bar on DS9. But, um anyway, how are you holding up?"
He gave Alex the glass and took a sip of his.
She took a small sip, than put it on the table immediately. Perhaps it was good for Cardassians, but she sure as hell didnt' like it. She smiled though. "With all these refits, Engineering is very busy. I've hardly had a chance to rest."
Nartu was unsettled by Alex's lack of consumption. Maybe Terrans weren't as fond of k'nar as he had previously thought. He quickly responed:
"I'm sure you haven't."
Motioning towards the drink on his desk, he spoke:
"Would you like something else, perhaps a Human drink? Something sweet, oh what do they call them, a glass of some…"
He paused for half a second in thought, then snapped his fingers when he remembered:
"Some Coca-Cola perhaps?"
He smiled slightly, and put down his k'nar as well. He wouldn't drink it alone.
'After all' he thought, 'Coke's not as bad as Klingon blood wine, and a sugary drink does sound slightly appealing.'
"Coca Cola would be great," She said. "I'm sure it's great for people who are used to it, but perhaps K'nar is an acquired taste?"
Nartu had never thought of k'nar that way. But, he supposed Humans had different sensory nodes in their tongues than Cardassians.
"I guess so." Nartu replied, then placed the two glasses of k'nar on the replicator.
"Computer, replace these two glasses of k'nar with two glasses of coca-cola, Earth style circa 1962. Override nutritional safety protocols, and have it at the temperature of 3 degrees centigrade. Actually computer make that two glass bottles of coke circa 1962 3 degrees celcius."
No more than a second after he spoke, the glasses of k'nar disappeared and two vintage looking bottles of Coca-Cola materialized in their place.
Nartu took the two bottles and gave one to the woman standing next to him:
"I thought it would taste better intact, with all the sugar and other ingredients used during that time."
He raised his bottle in a motion of cheers and spoke: "To new relationships!"
She smiled and raised her glass also. "To new relationships."
