Sam looked at Phil and nodded towards the dance floor. With a grin he stood and came to their table. "Let's show 'em how it's done," he said.
[NEW]
They danced that number and the next two before going back to their respective seats.
Sam gave Damon a quick kiss before she and Phil joined the others on the dance floor.
They found a space near the side where they wouldn't bother the other dancers and began an intricate series of moves. Both were fans of Big Band music and the dance styles that accompanied them.
After a few songs had been played Kaj stayed at the mic to talk with those present.
"Whew, well how's everybody doing tonight, having fun yet?"
The resounding cheer brought a smile to his face.
"Alright, now for our next trick I'd like to ask the stunning, the captivating, the utterly mesmerizing Commander Samantha York to come up on stage please?"
Leroy looked over at the man and almost started laughing. He wasn't clued in on this and had only been invited because he knew how to play an instrument. Looking around the rest of the players, he caught surprised looks as well.
Randy glanced around and saw the looks of surprise. Apparently this wasn't the norm.
Ted was smiling and shaking his head, trying to hold back his laughter while his kids giggled and pointed at Sam
Erin could hold back a surprised grin. This was going to be indefinably interesting.
Damon was taken by surprise by the request and he looked over to Samantha who was still on the dance floor. With a growing grin, he took a sip of his drink and leaned back into his chair. He was interested to see what she would do.
Sam looked at Phil, "Thanks for the dances." Then she looked at Damon and shrugged. She had no idea what Kaj had in mind. But, she was willing to play along.
Sam walked up to Kaj on the stage. "I'm afraid you'll have to settle for me instead, Lieutenant," she replied with a grin.
Kaj feigned surprise before gesturing to his mic.
"Your song skipper, lead us into it and we'll follow. Lemme make sure the troops are rallied here."
He then turned to the rest of the band and nodded to Sam while he made sure the guitar he had slung was tuned and ready to go.
"Alright, we know the drill, Old Devil Moon on the Skippers go, just chug along and she'll do the rest."
Sam nodded and began the bluesy love song from one of her favorite Broadway musicals.
I look at you and suddenly
Something in your eyes I see
Soon begins bewitching me...
She tried very hard not to sing directly to Damon, or stare at him while she sang, although she was thinking about him.
Sam kept one ear tuned to the band so they'd be on the same tempo, but she fully expected them to keep up with her as a good band should.
She finished the song and waited for a moment after the last note died out before nodding briefly to the audience and stepping back from the mic.
Sheridan was amazed at the CO's voice.. He applauded discretely and ordered another drink. The tunes were smoking but soon he would have to get back to his quarters. Yeoman Finney had volunteered to watch his son Max while he took a short break.
Damon was enthusiastic in his praising her performance. He was more than a little surprised that she could sing that well. He curled his tongue and let out a sharp whistle to add to the noise of the room. He was glad that he wasn't the only one.
Sam appreciated the response. Although she sang a lot, it was usually when she was working on a dig or doing research. She didn't generally sing in front of people -- if you didn't count numerous nights around a campfire on any of a dozen digs. She walked back to her table and sat next to Damon, giving his hand a tight squeeze in gratitude for his support.
"I had no idea you could sing." He was genuinely surprised and looked the part. "That was beautiful."
"It helped pass the time in the field," she replied with a self-deprecating smile.
