~Why do I feel like I'm in front of a board of inquiry?~ Sam asked Damon, using her telepathy to keep the thought private.
[NEW]
Damon understood the reason well, they were worried. "Look guys, we're all a little on edge as to what will happen in the next little while. I for one am confident that this transition will go well. The Marine Company on this ship is an experimental program that has yet to really be tested, so there is nearly zero chance that they will split us up. Given how so few ships can maintain a Company, it only makes sense that they keep us all together."
Sam gave Damon a quick smile. "As Captain Raine has said, Theta Fleet is new. They need everyone they have right now. They're not likely to split us up. If there's nothing else, you're dismissed."
Nava spoke up "From a diplomatic stand point, it would be foolish to break up a tried and true crew." She said as she took a drink of her juice "From my experience with the upper ranks, they are looking for crews that are proven." She said simply.
Ted nodded and left. Now he didn't have to worry about fixing the lounge completely. It was to be mothballed. He would simply make it as presentable as possible in every way, shape and form to invite the crew in. Other than that, it mattered little what he did; it would be gone in a few weeks anyway.
When everyone else had gone, Sam walked over to Damon. "Thank you."
"No worries." He said as he took her hand. "So they gave you your own ship?"
She gave his hand a squeeze and smiled. "So it seems. Orders are for me to take command of the Calypso when it arrives at Typhon. It's one thing to babysit a ship, it's another when it's your own...." She shook her head. "Between you and me, I hope I'm up to the challenge."
"You've done great so far. Certainly hasn't been the best set of conditions considering our little infestation, but everything has happened by the book. As for a trial run, I would say this one is a success."
"Thank you." Sam leaned up and kissed his cheek. "I don't know what I would have done without your support. John's great and all, but it's not quite the same."
"I have a feeling that you will have to rely on him a lot more in the future. I'll always be here for you, but he IS your XO."
"Yes, he is. He's been busy hunting ghezun lately, but I couldn't run the ship without him. You, however..." She shook her head. "Nevermind. Let's just say that he doesn't quite compare." She grinned and turned to the table to clean up the leftovers.
"I'm not so sure I would be okay if you two shared the same relationship we have." He said with a smile as he reached down to help her with the table.
"Neither would I," she chuckled. "I'm afraid I'm a one man woman."
It didn't take much time to finish clearing off the table with Damon's help. When it was empty, she replicated a damp cloth and wiped down the table. She tossed the cloth into the recycle bin and grinned. "All done."
She did a quick check of the room to be sure everything was cleared up and put away. Then she stopped in front of Damon and gave him a big hug. "You are wonderful," she whispered before she slipped away and headed for the door.
Damon smiled as he watched Samantha leave, happy beyond words to have her in his life and very proud of her career milestone.
Despite the fact that he was left alone in the room, he found he wasn't quite ready to leave. Instead he sat on the edge of the table and looked out the large windows to take stock of the moment. He sat there, staring at the stars hanging in space like diamonds on a cloth of black velvet, finding himself getting lost in his own thoughts. It wasn't that long ago that he was transfered to this ship, but so much had happened since he arrived. He turned from the window and took around the room he was in. This ship had given so much to him; new friends, a revitailized career and, most importantly, the woman he loved. Damon wasn't the sort to get nostalgic, but, he couldn't help but feel sorry that he would be leaving this ship.
With a parting nod, he tapped his fingers on the table and started to leave the room. As he walked to the door he had to stop very abruptly to avoid colliding with the still closed exit. The door failed to open. With a frown he reached over and ran his hand over the door panel which only chirped in a very odd tone. Nothing happened. He ran his hand over it again with a similar result. Damon stood at the door with a sour expression on his face when suddenly a laugh escaped his lips. "One last 'screw you' huh?" He said to the ship with a growing smile. He knew that this was just another one of the ship-wide malfunctions, but he couldn't help but feel like the Orion was doing this on purpose.
Almost as if the ship answered him, the doors mysteriously parted in front of his face. Damon was taken by surpised and he stood there at the opened doors for several seconds. With a shake of his head and a grin from ear to ear, he left the ready room for the last time.
