Mission:
Broken Mirror
Location: Briefing Room
[PREVIOUSLY]
Listening with a genuine curiosity, the Marine Captain glanced toward Damion before speaking, "We might not be intending on coming across the Terrans," Rye spoke, not wanting to step on any toes but he felt his query needed asking, "But historically, they've had a habit of worming their way into places where they can cause the most chaos and that is probably going to be here this time out. If we do happen to encounter them, how are we going to deal with whatever trouble they cause?"
[CONTINUED]
"Many has a point." Damion added as he leaned back in his chair. "I understand you want to avoid them, but should they interfere, we have to deal with them. It's ill advised to have this ship flying around the alternate Universe thinking they have an imaginary cloaking device powered trickly by your good intentions."
"Which is why it’s best to avoid them if we can. Believe me, I would very much like to deal with this situation here, but because we don't have the luxury of making sure they stay in this universe we have to consider chasing them to the other side. This technology has proven to be dangerous in the hands of people who, at the moment, are strictly using it to steal from you and escape." Alex said firmly as he looked between both men. "Should the Terran Empire get involved, either on purpose because they know of the technology or on accident because one of their ships stumble upon us, the ramifications of them getting their hands on this technology could be disastrous." He shifted his gaze to everyone around them room as he continued. "Imagine a Terran Ship appearing in Federation space or right at the heart of Starfleet around Earth. On the other side it's their home world so it’s not like they would have much of a trip. Now add a fleet to that one ship, catching you all by surprise. You said so yourselves..." He looked to Captain Rye then to Damion. "Their history proves, if given the chance, they would take it. That is why, gentlemen, I wish to avoid them because the alternative is far worse than a group of thieves running around with a fancy way of avoiding capture."
"None of us want to have any interactions with the Terran Empire," Sam assured Alex. "We're talking about scans and data as we have the opportunity. I don't want to be blindsided because we're afraid to look. But that is all we'll do. I don't think the Empire is involved in this or it would be more widespread. But we still have to make sure they don't take advantage of this situation, either. We don't know who is behind this, and we don't know if the Empire has become aware of it. So, it would be prudent to keep our eyes and ears open."
"lex." Alora decided it was time she added her input. "I understand what they're saying. They're talking about information only. Isn't that part of what we're here for? Only they'll be looking for more general information in case it may be relevant while we are looking specifically for where they got the tech to cross universes. I want to know if anything has changed since you were there. The information could be important. Surely if Max didn't intend for them to gather any data he would have sent us alone."
Alex looked to Alora and slowly a smile formed on his face. He placed his hand on hers and gave her a nod before turning to Sam and calmly began. "The Prowler has information on the Terran Empire which you are welcomed to and, should the situation prevent itself to acquire updated information, I see now harm. Commodore, I know how tempting it is to see out the Terran Empire for a more strategic reason or, as someone from this universe, to see or observe your alternate and even someone you may have lost here who still exists over there. I've been there before so I get it. I don't want that... curiosity to overshadow our current goal."
"We don't want to find anyone. No relatives, and no doppelgangers," Sam said. "That's not the information I want. As you know people from your universe have come here a number of times. I want to make sure we have the knowledge to defend ourselves if they do--and I am not saying these attacks are from the Empire. But someone is behind this and knowledge is power. And protection. We're here for the same reason you are: to find out what's going on and to stop the pirates. I'm a scientist. I gather information for later analysis. That is what I want to do here." She might need to have a talk to Admirals Hunter and Burke about this if it looked like it might become a problem.
Alex held up his hand. "You misunderstand. I am not saying it’s what someone wants. I am saying I understand the temptation and for some people, especially someone who has lost someone recently or close, it’s hard to not want to see them again in some form. We don't know what will happen once we get there and, I am not a mind reader, so I am not speaking as someone who is certain this will be an issue. I am just placing it on the table because I have seen it become one. That's all. When dealing with the Mirror Universe you have to be prepared for such encounters. Since our Universes have met, the Terran Empire, has establish such protocols and how to handle such encounters. While I am not an officer there any longer that training has not gone away. I meant no disrespect or ill intentions. I apologize if you thought I did."
He took a second to before adding. "And, as an Intelligence Officer, I know the power knowledge can hold. Often it can help in a current situation or one further down, so I know why it’s important to have that information. Which is why I am offering what we have, on the Prowler, to you. My team and I are authorized to take trips to the other universe and we try to keep up to date on what's going on. Not only for our protection but for Starfleet's protection as well. And again, should we require a trip there during this mission, I am not again collection anything new. However, speaking of someone from that Universe, I would like you and your crew to please keep in mind something important. Not everyone there shares the same ideas or beliefs as the Terran Empire. They don't consider anyone an enemy. Given what most of them had to grow up with there, the constant fighting for power and the xenophobia, chances are they have never experienced someone who doesn't have an ulterior motive or who simple just treats them as an equal. There are some, in that uniform, who do what they do because they know other way and fear the consequence." He took a moment to ponder his words because placing his hands on the table and adding. "Should we encounter a Terran Empire vessel, I do not want to initiate a fight, unless there is no other option."
