Mission: Pulling Together
Location: Various

[CONTINUED]

[OLD]

The legs were more complicated. Rhiannon decided to give the doctors another chance to respond to her calls.

"Page Doctor Alves and Doctor Williams again," she said. "But if they don't get here soon, we're going to have to deal with the legs ourselves."

[NEW]

When Lita Williams finally came into sickbay, she was slowing from a run. She pulled her hair into a quick pony tail and grabbed a nearby PADD. Her eyes winced as she imagined the pain implied in the initial prognosis. "Oh my Goodness," she said. And then she noticed Rhiannon. And then the bio readings. Williams blinked back her surprise as she studied them. The treatment administered thus far had been perfect. "Wow. Good job." She put a comforting hand on the nurse's shoulder. "A very good job," she reiterated. "What happened here?" She looked about Sickbay. "Where is Doctor Alves?"

Softtouch came all but bursting through the Sick Bay doors, still in his civilian attire he moved quickly towards the Doctor.

[Give me a moment to change into scrubs]." He signed with his special Gloves. [Strong emotional need to return, hope I did not read it wrong?]

[You were correct,] Rhiannon signed back. She turned to Doctor Williams. "Thanks for the compliment. Nurse Practitioner training let's me do quite a bit on my own. I'm prepared to proceed with the legs, but I though you might want to take a look. We got luck with the chest and arms. No compound fractures, no soft tissue damage beyond bruising and some minor cuts and scraps, no lung punctures. Do you want to do the legs, or just supervise while I do them?"

With her hands at her sides, Lita found herself nervously tapping her forefingers to her thumbs. She knew what she wanted to say, but couldn’t help second-guessing herself and her authority in such a new posting. Her primary job was to be Doctor Alves when Doctor Alves couldn’t — sickbay belonged to her. The ACMO closed her eyes a moment, and when she opened them again the decision had been made. “You clearly know what you are doing,” Williams said. “Getting in some more hours is an investment I’m happy to make. Please proceed while I supervise.”

"Of course, Doctor, I appreciate your confidence in me," Rhiannon said, again thankful that the third year of her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree was purely clinical and that much of it was in an emergent care setting. If not for that, she'd be way too inexperienced to do what she was about to do. Rhiannon motioned to the corpsmen and together they made sure the first break she was going to treat was lined up properly. Rhiannon held out her hand. "Bone knitter please."

A corpsman slapped the device into Rhiannon's waiting hand. Carefully, Rhiannon knit the bone back together. When the break was mended she let the corpsmen set the next break. Once set, Rhiannon knit that one back together. There were several fractures, some worse than others, fortunately none compound. The worse the fracture, the longer it took to heal. One they had to be particularly careful with because it escaped being compound by a hairsbreadth. They very, very carefully set that one and Rhiannon knit the bone back together. Finally, she was done. Rhiannon ordered the biobed to give Jayna one more intensive scan to make absolutely sure nothing else was wrong. She looked to Lita.

"What do you think, Doctor?" Rhiannon said. "Scan looks clean to me. Am I missing anything?"

Williams couldn't keep the smile from her lips as she nodded at the readings from her medical tricorder. She had watched over Rhiannon's work carefully enough, but her official reports demanded that she document the facts of the work. Beyond the cold numbers, however, one thing was very clear: "You have a natural talent. A surgeon's hands," Lita said. "If you ever want to pursue that talent further, you let me know. Immediately." The ACMO loaded a hypo to help revive Jayna, and she handed it to the nurse to administer.

"Thank you, Doctor Williams," Rhiannon replied as she administered the medicine Williams handed her and set the biobed controls to drop the sterile field and slowly bring down anesthetic field. "I'll keep that in mind."

Rhiannon turned to the corpsmen.

"Okay," she said. "Jeanette, thanks for starting the IV. Let's keep giving her fluids at least until she wakes up and a bit longer while she rests. Start an anti-inflammatory drip as well. She'll be sore from being knocked around. If she's experiencing more pain than the NSAID can handle, let Doctor Williams or myself know right away. That much pain likely means that something's wrong. Someone get her a robe so she doesn't have to streak through Sick Bay over to one of the changing rooms, where she can put on the scrubs Mike's going to go grab right now. After that, escort her to a recovery bay where she can, you know, recover."

There was a polite chuckle from the corpsmen. Rhiannon was young, but she knew her job, she was good at it, and she treated them with respect. Rhiannon put the order for the anti-inflammatory in Jayna's chart and handed it to Jeanette and the corpsmen all moved to follow her instructions. By this time, the medication Lita had ordered was taking effect and the anesthetic field was down. If all was well, Jayna would wake up soon.

Jayde felt groggy as she woke up. "Logan? Where's Logan?"

Rhiannon was at Jayna's side instantly.

"It's alright, Lieutenant," Rhiannon said. "You're in Sickbay. You were pretty banged up but we've put you back together, good as new. Mister Logan is still on Vulcan, I believe, still investigating. I'll try to contact him for you in a moment. First, though, how are you feeling? Are you experiencing any pain? If so, how bad on a scale of one to ten?"

"My ears are ringing," Jayna said. "And I feel a little groggy." She carefully checked her body by moving parts. "Pain is a three or four, so nothing serious. I remember an explosion..." She wanted to reassure Logan that she was fine, that he shouldn't worry. And she also just wanted him to be with her. But if he was on the Horus as she thought, it might be better to let he and Remi do their work.
