[OLD]
Kali had no idea what a Vulcan was. She found much of what the man said to be confusing. "I don't know," she said. "But I can try."
[NEW]
"Can you hear me?" she asked, trying very hard to speak as she had with Orvack and Samantha York.
Yes, Arnon thought back a Kali. Can you hear me?
Kali smiled. "That's nice to know."
Then she remembered the bracelet Orvack gave her and how it was to help with mental communication. "Let me try again," she said. She slipped off the bracelet and set it in front of her. Then she tried again. "Can you hear me now?"
"Interesting," Arnon said. "I can't hear you when you aren't wearing the bracelet. Through my own abilities I could sense that you were concentrating on something. I could even sense the neurons firing in your brain, but not the thoughts themselves. Does the bracelet amplify your telepathic abilities? Do the Qunari need them as well?"
"The bracelet and the stone are Qunari," Kali said, looking to Orvack. "I did not know I could communicate this way until Orvack gave me my bracelet."
"Enough!" Orvack yelled telepathically into Arnon's mind, his voice was strong and seem to strain in Barack's mind. "It is not a parlor trick. My people have been using this method to communicate for a long time. With the air of the bracelets we can focus much easily, and with the larger ones, we can communicate in from much larger distances. It is not a trick to be used for your amusement. It is our way of life. Do not treat it as such." Almost immediately after he finished speaking, a deep growl formed in his throat, as he narrowed his eyes to Arnon. He took the man's tone and question as an insult to something he has known all his life.
"No. You do not understand," Kali said, trying to talk directly to Orvack. "He is not making light of this, he simply wishes to know how we communicate. I welcome his questions because it helps me better understand the gift I have been given." Orvack had little experience with other species. Keelan's war only showed that strangers could not be trusted. She had been raised to be a diplomat, to rule her people, and now, she hoped, to unite the Jenefrans and Qunari and lead the people into a new future as members of the Federation.
"What makes his experience more valid with that of a species who has used and lived with that gift for as long as they can remember? Our people know more about the sacred stones then they do. This is as new to them as it is to you, Kali." Orvack replied telepathically as his demeanor soothed slightly. He let out a soft grunt before continuing. "I understand their curiosity, and once everything has been settled between out people, I will gladly share what we know. But, you need to understand, my people will not welcome them as easily as you have. We've spent a majority of ours lives running, hiding in the shadows, like animals being hunted. Until this peace is finally an assured thing, they will be as pushed away as anyone else would."
"There seem to be many among this Federation who communicate with their minds," Kali replied. "And yet they know nothing of the sacred stones. Could these stones be another reason Keelan attacked your people? To steal your stones? Perhaps these people can help both our people learn to communicate, and to find out if there is someone selling the sacred stones. If so, they may be in a position to stop them, and thus protect the Qunari." She looked at him for a long moment. "I am trying to help both them and us."
"I apologize," she said to Arnon. "Orvack is only protecting his people and their sacred stones."
"Of course," Arnon said. "I was merely trying to determine specifically how Qunari and Jenefran telepathy work. I guess to some up my point, the emissary traits appear to be genetic traits for telepathy or at least for being able to utilize the stones. For those that need the stones to communicate, it appears that the stones amplify...or perhaps focus, the wearer's telepathic abilities. It's a curious evolutionary development, particularly in regards to the Qunari, who rely on telepathy for communication. Ah, well. This has gone a bit off track. Sorry. Please continue the briefing."
Kali wished she understood what he meant. It sounded fascinating. Perhaps there would be time in the future for him to explain this too her.
Leroy had muted himself again as he received orders on where he needed to land. Taking a short warp jump, he smiled to himself as he saw the Earth for the first time in years. "Calypso, I'll be signing off. If anyone wants me to deliver messages to home while I'm here, let me know."
"Thank you, Leroy," Sam said. "We'll send on any messages after the briefing. Good luck."
She looked around the table again. "Thank you for your comments. They were greatly appreciated. I think, at this point, our best course of action is to go back to the planet nad speak with Commander Tate again. We'll ask her to come back with us, and if that doesn't work, we will beam her back to the ship. There is enough evidence to show that she is mentally unstable and needs treatment. Those who wish to join me can meet in the transporter room in ten minutes. Dismissed."
