Mission: Shadow Dance
ON
For the second time that day, Sam organized a group to beam down to Jenefra to have a talk with Keelan and Jennifer.
Arnon arrived in the Transporter Room prepared for the away mission. Hopefully they would be able to extract Tate this time around.
"Hello, Lieutenant Barak. I'm glad you'll be with us," Sam said.
Illise entered shortly after Arnon. She had a tricorder attached to one hip and a small sample case slung over a shoulder. If something environmental or technological had contributed to Tate's rapid change of heart, then she hoped to be able to find some evidence of it. Even if she found no evidence of either, then at the very least illuminating those possibilities might assist her doctor's in determining a treatment. Illise smiled wanly at Arnon and Sam and took a place near him on the transporter pad.
Sam nodded to Illise, glad the scientist was there.
Conway walked in the door, but not all combat ready. He nodded to the others, and waited by the wall with his hands behind his back. In the 'At Ease' position he looked at the Commodore. "Ma'am, others will be here shortly if you require the smash and grab option."
"Have a team ready to beam down if that becomes necessary," Sam said. "But no force. We have to maintain decorum."
"Aye Aye Ma'am," Conway said as a total of four more stood by him. "Retrieval team set to go on your orders."
Kali and Orvack walked into the transporter room. Kali was now familiar enough with the computer to ask directions.
Orvack stood by Kali at all times. He said nothing and remained every stoic in his appearance.
When everyone was accounted for, Sam stepped onto the transporter pad. "Let's go."
Kali held tightly to Orvack's hand, letting go only long enough to be transported down to the planet.
The team again materialized outside the council room. "I would like to speak with Jennifer Tate," she said to the nearest guard.
"Miss Tate is unavailable." The guard replied gruffly.
Sam decided that, as she was familiar with Jennifer, and she didn't think pulling out her tricorder would get a positive reception, she simply used her telepathic ability to scan the palace for Jennifer.
She was there, but Sam could barely sense her. "Where is King Keelan?" she asked next. Sam would have to find another way to get Tate to talk to them.
"The King is attending to matters of state and has requested he not be disturbed." The guard paused for a moment.
"What is your purpose here?" He stated.
Kali was not going to let Samantha York speak for her. This was her home, and these were her people. She had to prove herself if she wished to regain the loyalty of the palace guard. "My purpose," she said, stepping out from the back of the group, "Is to regain my rightful place as the ruler of Jenefra and to bring the traitor Keelan before the people to account for his role in the murder of my father, King Mrowen; and for the slaughter of the Qunari people who are our ancestral cousins." With the help of Spartacus she was now dressed in a formal gown that befit her new role as Queen. "Jennifer Tate is hereby pardoned for her alliance with the Usurper." She looked around at the palace guards and servants who had gathered to see what was going on. "As will all those who forsake Keelan and swear allegiance to me."
She turned to the guard. "Bring Jennifer Tate to me."
The guard bowed his head graciously but did not move. "You are most gracious Princess, even to those undeserving of such. However I'm afraid I cannot bring Miss Tate to you. She has openly admitted to her treason and must be dealt with according to our laws. I'm afraid, even a head of state cannot grant her freedom. She must be judged."
"You defy me?" Kali said. "She did not kill the King. This has been proven and the true assassin uncovered. He was one of Keelan's men, one who was sent to kill me as well. Jennifer Tate's only crime was believing Keelan--as was yours. Do you wish to receive the same punishment you demand for a woman who is not of our people?"
Kali signaled to another of the guards, one she knew was still loyal to her. "Bring me Jennifer Tate." She raised an eyebrow at Sam, who told her telepathically where the analyst was hiding. "You will find her in the dungeons where she believes herself safe from her people."
The guard nodded. He signaled to three other guards and quickly exited the room.
"As Keelan will have to account for his crimes, it would be best if Jennifer Tate return with you to your ship," Kali said to Sam. "She will not face punishment and she may find it...uncomfortable to be here once I am in charge."
Sam nodded in agreement. Jennifer needed to come back to the Calypso and get help.
