Mission: Point of View
Lieutenant Commander Ritsu Tainaka, the Chief Engineer for Theta Fleet Engineering and current commander of the USS Hibiki looked at the viewscreen confused. The USS Calypso's signal was flashing on and off and their transponder code was bouncing all over the place. The ship also seemed to have stopped in the middle of no where. This was confusing her and most of her staff.
The Hibiki was no ordinary Starship. The old Ambassador Class Starship had been heavily modified to support other ships within the fleet and was primarly home to Engineering labs and work areas. The Hibiki was what one could call a Corps of Engineers ship, and was tasked with rescueing and supporting any Federation or Civilian ship that needed assistance Engineering wise. Ritsu sat in her command chair, wondering what the hell was happening over on the Calypso.
"Niamh. Open a channel to the Calypso, get me Commodore York" she ordered as she tapped in her chair arm console.
[Calypso]
Sam saw the flash of an incoming signal for just a moment, then it disappeared. A moment later, it flashed again. She sighed and tapped the button to answer. "York here."
"Commodore" Ritsu said. "Is everything ok over on the Calypso?" she asked simply. "We're picking up some very unusual activity from your ship, you're also dead stop in the middle of deep space" Ritsu explained.
"That would about sum it up," Sam replied wryly. "We're having some computer issues and the engines are offline."
"I see" Ritsu said resting her chin between her thumb and index finger. "The Hibiki can be there in about four hours" she explained. "We are a SCE ship, we'll swing by and help you with your engines. If we can't repair them then we'll tow you back to safety" Ritsu explained with a smile. She always liked playing the rescue ship. "How intact are your dilithium crystals?"
"As far as we can tell, they're intact," Sam said. "With the computer problems, testing has been sporadic."
Ritsu nodded. She looked down towards her helm officer to change course for the Calypso. "Anything else we need to know that might speed things up?" she asked. "I'll have several teams ready to assist you once we're in range"
"We're not sure what's causing the computer problems," Sam admitted. "But the Chief Science Officer believes we passed through a cosmic string that stalled the engines."
"A cosmic string..." Ritsu pondered for a moment. "That would just about do it. That's more than enough to stall engines and possibly seize up your warp cores magnetic constrictors" Ritsu explained. "We've set course for you, so let your engineers know that we'll be there shortly" Ritsu said. "However a complete analysis on your warp core and nacelles would help speed things up. I believe we can have you back and under your own steam within a couple of hours of us getting there"
"I'll inform engineering of your pending arrival," Sam said. "And see if we can get you the analysis you need."
"Thanks" Ritsu replied. "We'll be there shortly, for now I suggest you shut down your engines as to not damage them further" she advised. "The Hibiki will be able to remote control your ship should the need arise"
"The engines are offline," Sam replied. "I don't think there's any chance they'll restart before you get here. Thanks for the help."
"Not a problem" Ritsu replied. "See you in a few hours" the channel cut off as the Hibiki's engines fired up to full power and jumped to Warp 9. The SCE ship would soon be alongside the Calypso.
