Something's Not Right

Mission: Point of View
Location: Engineering?

The room was silent except for the ambient hum of the warp core and the occasional sound of Engineers making there way about the area.

The silence was broken by the scream of a female which could be heard in close proximity to Samantha York.

Sam turned and looked towards the sound, then ran towards the woman. "York to security. Meet me on deck 6."

The woman appeared from behind an auxiliary station moving towards York. "Ma'am, I'm alright but someone needs to talk to you, she's behind that console." The young petty officer said indicating a dimly lit area to Samantha's front.

"Then what made you scream?" Sam asked.

"Actually that's because she was so quiet I didn't hear her come up from behind me. All she said was she had to speak with you on an urgent matter. It was weird, one of her eyes it was a really bright blue."

Bright blue? Could it be... But how did she get on the ship? "Why didn't she just call me herself?" Sam asked, moving towards the person in hiding.

"I really don't know." The petty officer replied confusedly. "She just told me she wants to speak to you."

"Very well. You're dismissed, Petty Officer. Thank you," Sam said. If her friend wanted to keep her presence unknown, Sam would play along -- for now. She walked into the dimness. "Done playing dead?" she asked.

"I'm afraid the game has changed Samantha." Alexandra said stepping out from the shadows wearing a fitted all black jumpsuit. "I apologize for the entrance, but it was imperative no one knew of my return, atleast not yet."

"The game has never been exactly what you thought it was, Alexandra. So, what do you think has changed?" Sam asked quietly.

"Morat is not trying to kill me, infact she's doing everything in her power to see to the exact opposite. She wishes me to be alive and I don't know why. I had thought my death or creating distance between myself and this ship would stop the attacks." Alexandra replied bowing her head for a moment. "Regrettably I was mistaken."

Sam folded her arms. "Yes, you were -- about a lot of things. As you now know, this is not just about you. In fact, she seems to be..." Sam paused, not sure she should continue what she was thinking. She had no proof, nothing but a gut feeling, and Alexandra was of the opinion that Sam wasn't capable of dealing with this sitatuion on her own so why would Alexandra believe anything Sam thought? "Never mind."

Alexandra scoffed crossing her arms over her chest raising the brow above her blue eye. "Get it out Samantha, I've never stopped you before and honestly I'm not exactly sure what her grand scheme is, all I know is something has changed. It's like SHE has changed."

Sam shook her head slowly. "Have you talked to your father? He's here, you know."

"I have not spoken with him as such would be unwise, age and paranoia have made him irrational although Tate seems to keep him on somewhat of a leash. I knew he would come the moment Morat appeared, he always does." Vance replied with an undertone of slight annoyance.

That only confirmed that Alexandra wasn't open minded enough to consider what Sam suspected -- that it was another of Alexandra's family that was the real target of Morat's wrath. "So then, why are you here?"

"Because I have questions that need answers, just like you. I need to figure out what Morat's grand plan is and why after all these years has she changed the rules. None of this makes any sense Samantha, none of it." She replied subtly frustrated by her inability to come up with answers.

"Then do what any good sleuth will do. Go back to the beginning and reevaluate the evidence. I think you've been following the wrong leads for quite a while now," Sam said. "However, you seem to be too proud to believe that you made a mistake, so you may not recognize the answers when you see them."

"Proud? Proud is definitely one word I would not use to describe myself at this time. Perhaps it is you whom have the closed mind as you certainly would not have thought me proud." Vance replied visibly upset by Samantha's comment. "Of all people on this ship I would think you would have been more compassionate, I suppose once again I was mistaken."

"Alexandra, instead of coming to me with the problems you were having with Morat you chose to fake your own death and disappear, leaving Amarylis and the rest of the crew to Morat's wrath. You didn't think we needed to know what was going on and you didn't thin we could help. I call that pride. Whatever is going on involves you, your father and Amarylis. You need to talk to them. And you need to let us in on what's going on." Sam paused. "You came back because the situation has changed. Are you ready to tell me exactly what's going on?"

Alexandra sighed knowing Sam was atleast partially right. "I was also working on a different theory at the time, a theory which has been proven incorrect. I believed Morat's focus was on me and my absence would separate her from this ship. However, you undoubtedly noticed a faint transporter signature close to the time the shuttle was destroyed. The signature however was not initiated as part of my plan but instead by another of Morat's resources looking to preserve my life. Looking on a wider scale, further research would show those ships were destroyed and found three sectors from the location of the explosion. Morat's tactics have changed and sadly that is all I know at this time."

"Again, I think you should talk to your father and to Amarylis. The three of you -- and anyone who associates with you -- is at risk. It does not seem to matter if you are there or not, the association seems to be enough to trigger her wrath," Sam said. "But it does seem to focus more on you and your family -- and anyone who associated or has associated with them."

Alexandra perked her brow at Sam. "I was under the impression Amarylis was transferred to a Starfleet medical facility?"

"No, she's still here, as is your father," Sam said.

"Then we must assume Morat's motives have expanded beyond those she once held or someone is withholding information." Alexandra commented.

"My vote is for the latter," Sam replied.

"Has something led you to lean towards this conclusion?" Alexandra asked.

"Yes," Sam said, not enlightening her. "But if you want to know more, ask your father and Amarylis." She paused for a moment. "Come on, I'll take you to them. It's better that you not be seen right now -- at least until we can find the rest of the spies. I still think we have one or two running around."
