Mission: Deadly Diplomacy
[CONTINUED]
[OLD]
Remy smiled again, feeling her conflict as he stood up again and placed his hands behind his back. "Now, Miss Manx, you can either help us help you or help us decide what goes on your tombstone and what to tell your sister, who is still a loyal member of Starfleet."
"You leave her out of this!"
[NEW]
"You leave her out of this!" Remy yelled back, slamming his small hands on the table, startling Kayte for a moment. "She already know's you're a traitor, a thief, and a murderer. She already knows you're hiding a mass murderer from justice. How much more burden do you want to put on her? Give her something to hold onto, Manx! Give her a glimmer of hope that her beloved sister is still inside there somewhere." He tapped a button on his PADD as multiple pictures began to pop up on the screens, this time of Kayte and her sister as children. Growing up and in Starfleet. Smiling as they put their arms around each other at their graduation. "She is the one person who has insisted you were a puppet in this mess. She has been at your side despite all the reports and objections by her superior officers. Help us take down Stryfe and I will promise you that she will continue to stand by your side."
Kayte was conflicted. Her eyes jotting around from picture to picture. Memories of her sister and childhood flooding in. Her eyes beginning to water at the words coming from Remy. "He'll... kill... me."
"We won't let him." Remy replied quickly, gripping his small hands onto the side of the table. "We will stick him into the deepest darkest hole that he won't be able to crawl back out. He will die in that hole, aged and forgotten, with no one to remember him."
[Observation Room]
Logan looked back at the window, watching Remy. He never seen him at this level. Playing at someone's emotions. Using someones family and memories against them. Max must be giving Remy a lot of heat in order to bring Stryfe to justice.
Jayna raised an eyebrow at that. This seemed quite in character for Remy. "Seems to me like he's playing her like a pro," she countered.
"Probably because he has to." Logan said softly in reply. "I'm not sure he wants to further add to his Grumpy Dwarf reputation. It's bad enough being someone like him in his position."
"He's also a trained interrogator," she replied. "And that means full-on Grump."
"You don't understand." Logan replied with a sigh as he shook his head. "You don't know him like I do."
"Then explain," she said.
Logan let out a sigh, before clearing his throat and speaking aloud. "I've worked with Remy, for a long time, and I can tell you that his reputation is important to him and the one he has isn't the one he wants. It's tough for him to be someone of his size and rank. Not many officers will take him seriously and, as full Betazoid, he hears everything that people say. In and outside of their head. Now imagine getting that all your life? Doesn't matter how much you push to be the best you are always going to have something like that creeping up on you."
Jayna knew all too well about that sort of thing. Too many people in Starfleet still didn't trust anyone who came through the Maquis. "I've been on two ships with you and Remy," Jayna said. "If he wants a different reputation, he needs to stop acting like a bear with a beehive up his butt."
"You need to decide on whose side your on. One minute you like him and one minute you don't. This is not how we work. We're more then just a team. We're supposed to be a family, but I guess that's crossing a line with you." Logan said quickly and harshly, getting more and more frustrated that the message he was trying to get through wasn't getting through. None of this was working out the way he wanted and it was either him or Jayna's stubbornness that was making it difficult.
"Hey, just because I like him doesn't mean I'm blind to his faults," she countered. He didn't understand her, or what she was trying to say. She wondered how you could be so close to someone and still not understand them. It didn't matter how much she cared about Logan, if she didn't act the way he thought she should act or say what he thought she should say, she was in the wrong. "Look, Logan, he has a reputation because he has EARNED a reputation. If he wants people to think otherwise, he needs to change his behavior. That doesn't alter the fact that he is good at his job and he knows how to push Manx' buttons."
She turned back to the viewscreen, keenly aware that she was supposed to be observing, not arguing.
Logan closed his eyes and let out a deep breath, in an attempt to calm himself. As he gripped onto the console he took another deep breath inward and tried to think of something to calm him down. Working on Horus. Talk with Jayna. Teasing Spock. Slowly as he let it go of the console he opened his eyes and spoke. "You win. I know nothing. I'm just the mechanic and the muscle." Sadly, he turned around and left the observation room, tossing his ragged hood over his head and heading right to the nearest turbolift.
"No, Logan, I lose ... everything that matters," she said quietly.
[Interrogation Room]
Remy tapped his combadge and tucked the PADD under his arm. "Batiste to Security. Miss Manx is ready to cooperate. Please have someone escort her to the mess. Allow her a hot meal before bringing her back to the brig."
"Acknowledged. Security Out." The Officer on the other end replied.
"Miss Manx. When you are finished, I would like you to tell the acting Chief what we need in order to find the Nightstar and any defenses and offensives we may encounter." Remy asked as the Caitian woman nodded her head slowly. "Thank you. I will keep my word. I promise."
As the Security Officers walked into the Interrogation room, Remy walked over to the panel on the wall and tapped in a few commands, opening the intercom to inside the Observation Room. "Mister Logan. Please prepare the Horus. Ensure all its offensive and defensive weapons are at the ready. Miss Jayna, please coordinate with Security that we are ready to invade the Nightstar and retrieve our people. We're finally going to take down Stryfe. Make the calendar, Team. After the mission, we celebrate.
"Yes, sir," Jayna said. She wasn't going to tell him that Logan walked out. "Good job."
She sent a message to Logan, relaying Remy's instructions, not sure if Logan would even look to see what she'd sent. When this was over, when Wolfe and Lancaster were back on the Calypso, she would tender her resignation. Once she explained to Remy what was going on and that she couldn't bear to stay here with the way everything she said or tried to say coming out so wrong, he would understand. He wouldn't like it, but he would understand. Then she would go away somewhere no one knew or cared who she was and simply get lost.
