Deadly Diplomacy

Ilse stopped in her office and picked up a PADD with crew updates and the current conditions of the civilian lounge manager long with the others that had been transported to the base for selective surgeries. She paused long enough in her office and queried the computer. "Computer what is the location of Commodore York?"
"Commodore York is in her quarters."
Ilse took a deep breath and thought ~swell, do I bring this to the Captains attention or not~ unsure she tapped her com-badge as she picked up a tricorder and placed in in her pocket. "Frost to York."
"York here."
"Ma'am, I am sorry to disturb you but can I meet with you for a few moments, to discuss the crew that have returned and those that have not?" Frost queried
"All right. I can give you a few minutes. Would you like to meet in my quarters or my Ready Room?"
"Ma'am, I am at your disposal whichever location fits with your schedule better." Ilse replied
Sam glanced over at Damon who was sifting through a pile of PADDs. He would be busy for a little longer and wasn't likely to be bothered if she had a short meeting, so she decided to stay where she was. "My quarters then."
"Yes Ma'am" Frost replied and headed out to the Captains' quarters. Once she was there she pressed the chime and waited.
"Enter." Sam wore a casual pair of well-worn jeans and a yellow t-shirt. She stood to greet the doctor. "Have a seat," she said, indicating the overstuffed chair opposite the couch.
Frost came to attention after she entered the room.
"At ease. I'm not one for formality, especially in my quarters," Sam replied, waving off the salute.
"We are still trying to figure out if I should salute her when I come home." Damon joked as he picked up the next PADD in sequence. "Thank goodness for the Marine card."
Sam took a small pillow off the couch and threw it at Damon playfully. He knew full well she disliked being saluted -- especially by him. The pillow hit his shoulder and bounced harmlessly away.
Frost smiled slightly, it was good to see that the Captain took time to be with her family and enjoy her down time when she could get it.
"What can I do for you, Lieutenant?" Sam asked.
"Captain, I have heard a few whispered words from some of the other crew that Doctor Bowen's mother isn't doing as well as she thought she would be and can't return to duty as she had planned." Ilse said
"That's correct," Sam said. "Leanne had to extend her leave. At this point, she's not sure how long she'll be gone."
Frost's forehead puckered for a second longer then necessary as she chewed on that information. "And so Dr. Hart is in charge then?"
"Doctor Hart transferred to the USS Orsino," Sam said. "You were next in line but you were also away on an extended leave. Right now, there is no head of department."
"Oh" Frost replied, her forehead stayed puckered as she wasn't going to correct her superior, that she had been on the station assisting with a surgery on a klingon's leg and learning what needed to be done to help him through therapy. "So, when is the new chief arriving?"
"Since Leanne isn't sure what her long-term status is at the moment, there isn't one," Sam said. And if Starfleet did send her a replacement, she was likely to say no anyway. Sam didn't trust anyone sent to the ship right now. "As the senior doctor, I'd like you to be the acting head of department until Leanne knows if she'll be able to return or not."
"Yes Ma'am." Frost said
Damon finished sorting through his reports and pushed them aside. "What do you need from us in terms of setting the department up for your care?"
Frost looked at the Marine a funny look on her face. "Absolutely nothing Sir. The medical staff, like all the crew aboard the Calypso has always been one of the best. Basically, I simply step in and we continue as we always have." Frost said and wondered to herself who she could assign as her assistant. She had to take a long look at the crew.
"Yes, we have a competent crew," Sam said, "But you've also lost several medical personnel, including two doctors. But if you believe those who remain are adequate to the task, we will let you get back to work --unless there's anything else you wish to bring up?"
Frost hesitated
Sam pulled up the current medical staff on her computer and quickly scanned through the list. There was something she'd seen about Hart... Yes, there it was. "We received a replacement for Dr. Hart at the Starbase. His name is Lieutenant Verdeath Newmark. He's a surgeon. I suggest you meet with him as he will be your new Assistant CMO."
"Yes Ma'am." Frost said
Sam nodded. "Good luck, Lieutenant."
