Mission: What Dreams May Come?

[OLD]

"I was born and raised in the Yucatan on Earth. Lots of ancient ruins in the jungle. I used to pretend to be an explorer as a child. So, when I grew up, I became a scientist and joined Starfleet. I still love ancient civilizations. So, I guess you could say I never really grew up." She grinned and continued. "I'm also a wicked futbol player. What about you?"

[NEW]

"Well I am a Kiroisan not a Trill, we look alike to some people, the spots and all. I was born and raised on Kiros Prime. My parents had someone selected for me to marry, they had arranged a marriage as is the custom on my world.

You see my family was nobility, still is I suppose and the marriage was supposed to make our two houses stronger. We were both good friends but did not want to marry. I was in love with a beautiful girl named Rachel and he was in love with another boy.

My parents knew that since I am an empathic metamorph I would have eventually adapted so they did not care that neither of us would be have been happy and his parents felt the same.

Rachel and I were going to elope but then she died a mysterious death. She was murdered. I don't know whether it was my parents, Darcell's family or some rival family just out to stir the viper's nest, but I was taking no chances. I fled my world and came to Earth

That's why I became an investigator. I got my Masters in Crime Scene Investigations last year. Rather than join the Academy and take the officer route, I chose to enlist instead.

Maria looked at him for several moments, her gaze full of sympathy. "I'm so sorry. That's a terrible thing to have to go through."

"Thank you," he responded with a wan smile. He almost reached out to her, but stopped himself. He wanted the touch of another but was afraid where it might lead. "One of the things I plan before I die is to find out who killed her.

But my story is not all darkness and tragedy. When I came to Earth I found a family. Cloistered monks, I had not heard really about Christianity and am still not sure I adhere to all the tenants but they were good to me an enabled me to University and Graduate School."

"Monks? That would be an interesting way to grow up." Maria had grown up around Catholics, but didn't know much about monks, personally. "I'm very glad your life has not been all sad. Life is too short to spend it in sorrow and regrets. We all have them, but we need to use them to grow stronger and appreciate the good things." She stopped and smiled. "Sorry. I'm not trying to be a counselor. I just like to enjoy life." She shrugged and dipped another French fry into a cup of sauce before popping it into her mouth.

"No I agree. Life is too short. That is why I try to enjoy myself. And don't worry about playing counselor, I don't mind. I am probably one of the few Star Fleet Officers that actually seethe benefit of a counselor, even the unofficial kind.

Do you like rock climbing?"

"I've only been once or twice, but I enjoyed it. Do you rock climb?" she asked.

"Yes, I do. I like the real thing when I can. I've climbed Spider Rock, Meetora, and Mount Roraima on Earth and the Crags and Mount Chulave On Kiros Prime, plus half a dozen or so of my own creation in the holodeck.

I like free climbing the best, but I know that is not everyone's cup of... tea. I'd love to take you sometime. Er uhh, that is you'd be interested."

"If you don't mind taking someone who's not an expert, I'd love to. It sounds like fun," she said, her eyes sparkling.

"Sure, we'll start with something fairly simple. Maybe Spider Rock. It's only about 800 feet or so high and comparatively easy. Give me a day or two to get settled in and I'll set something up. What would be a good time for you?"

"Any afternoon or evening. I generally work mornings. 800 feet? That sounds doable. Why is it called Spider Rock?"

'Because of a Navajo legend. Spider Woman who had supernatural powers. When the Navajo moved from the third to the fourth age they were besieged by monsters. She gave power to Monster Slayer and Child Born Of Water to go and find their father Sun God. He in in turn showed them how to destroy all monsters from the Earth.

She made her home at the of Spider Rock. Her husband Spider Man taught the people how to weave."

"That's a great legend. I'm not as familiar with North American mythos as I am with the rest of the Americas."

"Yes well it can get pretty windy up there, I was caught in a storm once. Not a good thing. I don't think we want to try to free climb that."
