A Pirate's Life

Kara gritted her teeth. Could the woman BE any more obvious? She considered telling the woman she wasn't needed, but it was really up to Cam if he wanted to accept her invitation.

"Calm down Staff Sergeant. The man was just assimilated by the borg, let him have this one." Amarylis said whispering into Kara's ear.
She relaxed and sat back, pretending to enjoy the drink while she listened to the conversation around her. One group of sailors was talking about the days' catch. At another table the conversation was centered around local gossip. That one caught her attention briefly. Then she focused on another table, where sailors were talking about recent pirate attacks.
She turned to look at the men, her eyes wide. "Oh, dear. Pirates? Are they coming here?"
The men at the table laughed. "Not bloody likely. Too many British Regulars. They stick to Devil's Isle. This ship is known for attacking close to land. Claims she does it so the crew can get to shore. Me, I think she does it because she's afraid to meet any real pirates on the open sea."
"She? There are female pirates?" Her hand fluttered to her chest.
"One or two, not worth the name pirate if you ask me. This one's got the Devil's own luck. Only reason she's still out there. But don't worry, lass, we'll catch her."
"How?" Kara asked breathlessly. "I mean, if she's managed to not get aught so far, what makes you think you'll get her now?"
"'Cause the last ship she attacked will be in port tomorrow. We're sending out four ships to look for her. She can't have gone far, there's been no wind for a week now."
Kara smiled in relief. "I wish you luck, then!" She turned back to her companions and smiled. "Looks like our stay won't be so boring after all."
"They wouldn't last five minutes with us. I'd be surprised if they could wield a blade properly let alone spar with the Black Pearl." Amarylis joked smiling at Kara.
"Probably not, but I would rather not test that theory," she said, grinning back at Amarylis.
"You need more ale...." Amarylis said calling the wench back over.
The waitress gave Amarylis barely a glance, choosing to pay attention to the two men. "More ale? Coming right up."
She stopped to flirt with the men at the next table before bringing four ales for each table.
"Honey, I don't mean to pry, but those men over there.....you aren't exactly what they are looking for if you catch my drift."
"It get me tips," the waitress hissed, glaring at Amarylis. "Bugger off if you know what's good for you."
"Settle down Ma'am, I'm sure my friend didn't mean anything by what she said" Cam said, trying to play diplomat, "I'm sure she just wanted to warn you about those men"
"You will take my friend's advice here and walk away...if you know what's good for you." Amarylis said coldly ready to pounce on the woman at a moment's notice.
"Stand down Beckinsale, not the time or place" Cam said, giving her a warning glare
Kara took her hand off her knife and let out the breath she'd been holding. Amarylis was close to causing a fight and that would not end well. She finished her drink and stood. "I'm going to get some air."
Cam looked after Kara, "Take Beckinsale with you, I don't want anyone to walk around on their own. Besides, I'd prefer she didn't start a bar brawl with the people here right now"
Amarylis got up and placed her arm on Kara's back. "Come on Staff Sergeant, the fresh air will do you some good."
When they were outside, Kara turned to Amarylis. "Okay, what's up?"
"I could ask you the same, you wanted to get some air." Amarylis replied.
"Between the drunken thoughts and the waitress trying to pick up every male in the place, I'd had enough," Kara said. "So I came out here where it's quieter."
"She was about a dumb as a deck plate and just as pretty too. She didn't even realize those guys weren't laughing because they liked what they saw, they were laughing because they liked each other! Probably amazed at how she missed them holding each other's hand." Amarylis said with a chuckle rolling her eyes.
Kara ignored the comment and walked further from the pub. It was a nice night and the light breeze blowing off the sea helped ease the noise in her mind from the increasingly loud thoughts. It had been a long time since she'd been in a room with that many drunkards. Even though they were holographic they still were thinking loud, lewd thoughts.
Amarylis sighed and approached Kara placing her hand on her shoulder and gently massaging it. "C'mon now girl, something is obviously bothering you and it's not just the noise."
"Thank you for your concern, but I'm fine," Kara assured her. She wasn't going to admit that Cam was getting to her.
"Darling I've seen fine and you are not it."
She walked in front of Kara and looked into her eyes. "It's Lieutenant Bourne isn't it?"
Kara glanced at her sharply. "What makes you think it's Cam?"
"I can see the way you look at him, you're close, not like relationship close but definetely good friends. You know I had a very good friend that got taken by the damn borg too, but we got her back just like Cam. I know it's not easy to watch and they never come back the same but we have to keep fighting to get them back. If they push us away we push harder and we don't stop until every last trace of those tin cans are gone."
Amarylis bit her lip holding back a wave of emotion as she thought of Alexandra.
"It has nothing to do with the Borg. As far as that goes, Cam's fine." It was more to do with his anger issues, which he'd been dealing with for years, apparently. But she couldn't mention that to anyone or risk getting him in trouble.
However, something about Amarylis' comment made Kara wonder what had happened in the Sergeant's life to warrant such a reaction.
"Wanna tell me about it?" Kara asked softly.
