759 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: The Devils Snare
Location: 10 Foreward
Timeline: Current

Alex adjusted her casual outfit in the mirror. She'd just got off duty, and was going to the mess hall to grab a bite to eat. She wore a black dress that was short as it stopped at her fingertips. The top of the dress was a large V neck, the bottom of which stopped just above her stomach. A black belt with a single golden loop was secured around her slender waist. She styled her hair so that it had lift. It's brown silk shined all the way down her back. She hadn't cut her hair since high school.

She left her quarters when she was sure she was ready. Perhaps she looked a little too dressy for dinner alone, but she would never ever go anywhere not looking her best. Several flattering stares found her as she traveled the corridors. People looked on. Men, looked as if their day had been brightened significantly by the sight of her, while most women gave a scowl.

She entered the mess hall to more looks. She ignored them and made her way over to the replicator, but was quickly distracted by Chris, who was looking out of the forward windows and hadn't noticed her. She smiled and made an approach as quiet as a church mouse. When she was close, she reached her hands around his waist and hugged him tight, her curvaceous figure melting into his back "Guess who..." She whispered softly.

Chris smiled at her touch, putting his hands on hers. "I have missed you these last few days. I wish you didn’t have to work so hard. Are you doing okay?" Chris asked before turning to face her, her arms still around his waist. Chris now putting his arms around her, pulling her in tight as he rested his forehead on hers.

"I'm fine." She said as if she could never have been anything but fine. "I have a fairly busy job." She let go of him and walked over to the replicator. There, she ordered a lasagna and sat at the table nearest to where Chris was standing. "I haven't eaten all day. It's times like this I miss those picnic lunches you send me." She smiled as she lifted her fork.

Chris sat down opposite of Alex. Yeah, sorry about that. I dropped the ball there. I will be more vigilant when you are working hard there and make sure that you don't go hungry. I know you don't always have time to get something."

She giggled. "It's not your job. There's not responsibility to do it."

"Someone has to keep you fed so you don't get to skinny. When you are down there, you loose track of time and forget to eat. We can't have that." Chris explained as he began smiling.

She giggled again, taking another bite of her food. "I'll live." She finished chewing and looked at him, her beautiful eyes sparkling. "So, how have you been? You must enjoy working on the Bridge?"

Chris smiled, "It can be fun. At least I know what's going on most of the time with the ship. You have a station up there too ya know. You cam monitor Engineering from the bridge, but you knew that."

No thanks...I'm more of a 'Hands on' type of woman. I'd much rather do my own work then delegate. I enjoy Engineering far more than I do the Bridge."

"But there will be a till during a hazardous mission that the Captain will need you up there to see whats going on first hand. That is why the Engineering station is up there. That will give you an excuse to come up and look around from time to time." Chris replied with a smile.

She smiled. "Maybe...if only just to see you."

"Of course, I'm there all the time, but you can always see me off duty whenever you want." Chris winked.

"I have the rest of the day off..want to do something?" She asked, having no idea what he had in mind if he did.

"Unfortunately, some of us don't, however I am free after sixteen thirty hours. If you like we can do something after that?" Chris asked.

"I'll call you then." She said, getting up from her seat.

Chris could only watch a the person that he had begun to care about walked away with out even so much as a good bye.
