Mission:
The Enemy Within: Lying in Wait
Location: USS Calypso
ON
Lizzie eyed the strange spider-like creature curiously. "Any ideas what it is or where it came from?"
"I have seen many spiders. None like this," Apu said, making sure the creature was truly dead. There was something disturbing about it, but he couldn't place it.
Mak looked at the spider instantly and froze on the spot. "Whoa!" He managed to say.
"You know that's arachnophobia you just demonstrated Ensign. You can set up an appointment with me later to talk about it." Malcolm said walking up to the weird creature to examine it."Ugly thing isn't it." he said getting a closer look.
"I'll take that under advisement sir," Mak told Malcolm with a glare then shook off the shock. He turned to Lizzie and Apu; "I detected some physical fluctuations with some of the circuitry in this room. I'm here to fix it."
"What sort of fluctuations?" LIzzie asked. "I've noticed nothing wrong." She looked at the creature, which seemed to be disintegrating. "Unless that thing has something to do with it."
She tapped her combadge. "Jackson to York. Commodore, could you come to the arboretum? I think you need to see this."
"On my way," York replied.
Lizzie then looked at the Trill. "I don't think I've seen you on board, Lieutenant. Welcome to the arboretum."
"Thank you uhh." he looked at the pips on her collar."Lieutenant."
Sam walked briskly into the arboretum. It was rare for her to be called down here. Whatever it was, Lizzie sounded a little unnerved.
When she saw no one in the main arboretum, she slipped into the back rooms, finding the others in the workroom. "Hi. What's up?"
Lizzie pointed to what was left of the spider-like creature. "Any idea what that is?"
Sam walked over to it and had a close look. "Never seen it before." She grabbed one of the science tricorders and began to scan it carefully. "It's not alive. Technically. The readings showed that it had some form of life, but it wasn't exactly "living." It was more like a replicant of some sort, but if it was, it was more advanced than anything she'd seen -- or heard of -- before. She scanned it in greater detail, looking at cellular structure and composition. It was only then that she found something familiar and it made her go cold inside. "Computer, lock entity on Mr. Barnum's knife in a stasis field. I want it frozen so it can't continue decomposing. Do a complete analysis of the creature, compare it to all known constructs. I want it held for future study as well. Freeze it in whatever way works best to keep it from disintegrating further."
"What do you think it is?" LIzzie asked.
"I don't want this mentioned to anyone. Not until I can confirm my suspicions, but if I'm right -- and I hope I'm not -- we're dealing with Borg technology."
"The borg? Commodore pardon my bluntness but we haven't heard from the Borg for a few years now, not since their last failed attempt at assimilating the Federation. It doesn't seem likely they'll be keen about us firmly planting our boot it its rightful place, again." Malcolm said
"I'm not keen about having them show up, either," Sam said. She showed Malcolm the readings. "Those are Borg nanites. I don't know if that means we have another Borg incursion or something else, but I'm not going to turn a blind eye to this. I want to find out where they came from and how they got on my ship."
***Executive Officer's Quarters***
Vance was assimilating the ship's computer logs to gather information on the activities of the crew. For the past forty eight hours Vance had not had any significant contact with the senior ranking officers to avoid detection. The Commanding Officer's theory of her ailment had proved an excellent curtain to provide the resources for an effective and efficient execution of her task. The assimilation of Nurse lowe also aided the assimilation process and Vance now had at least fifty drones at her disposal.
Her process was halted at the mention of a strange creature seen in the arboretum. A civilian reported witnessing a science officer engaged by a spider-like creature. The report continued describing her baby with words unworthy of her precious child.
She focused her thoughts to her child, but there was no return. While it's existence remained in body it's mind was void of thought. Vance came to the conclusion that the federation officers were studying her creation and would soon know it's nature and her identity.
"Computer, initial protocol Vance November, Juliet, Alpha."
The computer bleeped and suddenly the white lit room was darkened lit only by the blinking crimson bars signalling the vessel was in red alert. However in this instance, the vessel was not ready for combat but running on emergency power.
Vance tapped her communications device. "Nurse Lowe, you must depart this vessel immediately. Further instructions will be given on the planet."
She briskly departed the room.
"Yes, ma'am," Lowe responded. She set her tea down and checked out, stating that she was unwell and needed to go to her quarters to rest.
[Arboretum]
The red alert surprised Sam. "Computer, why are we at red alert?"
"The ship is on emergency power."
"Why?"
"Unknown."
"Lizzie, Apu, find out what that thing is." She turned and practically ran to the bridge. She tapped her combadge as she exited the arboretum. "All senior staff, report."
"Here we go." Malcolm said under his breath as he promptly followed the Captain out towards the turbolift and ultimately the bridge to try and be of some use somehow.
