Bad Memories

469 words; about a 2 minute read

Mission: Subjugation
Location: Mining camp isolation cell

Cameron was sitting in the middle of the small isolation cell, waiting for the guards to let him out.

This was his third stint in isolation, and he'd found it a nice brake from the mine, despite only being fed every second day and having no bed, no blankets and the only light came from the cracks around the door.

As he sat there, his mind started to float off into old memories, as it often did while he was in here. This time, it went back to an assassination he had preformed During the Dominion war. He was assigned to a Recon team as their sniper as he was one of the few marine in his Platoon who had Reconnaissance experience.

His team was on one of the old Cardassian Colonies in what used to be the DMZ and their target was a Cardassian Legate who was, 'making an inspection' of the garrison of troops assigned to hold the planet. Climbing up to the top of a hill, looking over the Capital, Cameron unslung his modified TR-116 rifle, lay belly down on the ground and started to get comfortable.

His spotter, a young female marine named Korra, knelt down beside him and pulled out two pair of Exographic targeting sencors, placed one on her head, than fitted the second to Cameron.

"what's wrong with a simple scope on this thing?" Cameron asked, adjusting the headset to a more comfortable position

"these work better Bourne" Korra said, laying down beside him "besides, can a scope see through buildings?"

"No" Cameron admitted reluctantly, "but that's the whole point. If you can't see your target clearly with the scope, than you need to find a different position, fortunately this town is fairly flat and low"

After a few hours of watching and waiting, their opportunity arrived. "Ok, here we go" Cameron said, flicking off the rifles safety.

"Ok, target's in sight" Korra said, zooming in her view of the area "a little to the left, left, left..."

"hang on, I've got a building in the way.....there, line of sight" Cameron said, reaching down and curling his finger around the trigger. After taking a few slow breaths to slow his heart rate, Cameron made one final exhale as he gently squeezed the trigger.

A moment later, the Cardassian Legate lay dead on the ground in front of a line of troops, a nice small hole through his head.

Seeing this sight again, Cameron snapped out of his memories and back to the present. Glancing around the dark room, he wondered how he let himself get into this mess in the first place. Shaking off the feeling, he turned over onto his belly, and started doing some push-ups
