1,304 words; about a 7 minute read
Mission:
Subjugation
Location: Von Braun shuttle
ON
The shuttle trip was slow, but to avoid observation it was a necessity. They "drifted strategically" through the ship graveyard to where the first of the ships sat.
Guiding the shuttle with RCS systems, to the misguided belief of everyone, was actually easier, than impulse. They drifted, and the RCS systems simply alter the manner in which the ship drifted. At impulse, on the other hand, it was fast paced, and the inertial dampeners were absolutely necessary to stay away from squishy paste. Here, they were set below minimum. They were, quite simply, off.
Maddison idly tapped her fingers against the console. The ship moved along. "Transporter range in 50,000 KM. At this rate, that's about half an hour." She pondered the wreckage collection. "If..." She trailed off. "...they left our shuttles behind... do you think... they left other craft behind on the other ships?"
Allen looked through a viewport at the graveyard of dozens of ships. "I would think it difficult to believe that we were the only lucky ones to be left with shuttles. Federation technology outpaces most of these designs, if any shuttles were taken, they would be ours." He looked to Maddison and nodded his head. "I'd say it's a safe bet there are more."
"We should consider finding them. They may have technology we can use, that won't be so easily detected." Maddison said. "Grappling hook launchers, would be appreciated. While you guys are hunting through space debris, I'm going shuttle part shopping."
"Don't forget to look for a big pair of fuzzy dice." Allen grinned.
"I'm not sure whether or not game-play would be appropriate, but if you find it really necessary, I'll see what I can find." Maddison said, shrugging.
"Every little bit helps." He said, sitting back into his chair.
Lizzie chuckled at the conversation. "I much prefer a bobble head to fuzzy dice. Maybe a little chihuahua we can put by helm??"
Patrick closed his eyes and thought back to a summer many years ago. His uncle stealing him away from work for a day to go to the beach. He remembered those fuzzy cubes hanging off the mirror in his uncle's car. A day of fun in a life of nothing but work, at least until he'd realized his uncle had been too drunk to drive them home and Patrick had to call his dad to ask for a ride home. That ride had been much darker, and seemed to have lasted forever.
Maria rolled her eyes and continued gathering her gear.
"Well then." Maddison said. "We're getting ready to land. I'd say dock, but there's no atmosphere. As Robert would say, let's rock and roll."
"You could say we're getting ready to board, though not sure if it works with this scenario." Marek said as he checked the gear on his person.
Patrick buttoned up, got his helmet locked, and got ready as they got to transporter range. He double checked his equipment and made sure everyone else was properly buttoned up.
"Okay, let's see what we can scavenge," Lizzie said, grinning at the others. "I hope they find some viable hydroponics"
Jourdan who was sitting at the engineering station spun around in her chair. "From these readings, I do believe that there are shuttles aboard. However, from what I can tell the doors to the shuttlebay are sealed shut" She explained. "When we're aboard, we'll split up. Take phaser rifles and an engineering kit. I'll be heading towards Engineering. Hopefully there is something left behind that we can use"
"LIzzie and I will take science," Maria said. She looked to Patrick. "Do you wish to come with us?"
"Actually, I'm thinking the computer core. A lot of the stuff we need are computer parts to restore our systems. I'm used to jury rigging older computers to newer systems and sensors, so I might be best suited for that." Patrick actually wanted to go with her, running around an empty ship alone was not something he looked forward to, but...
"All I really want for Christmas is enough HVDC cable to start a direct route power supply to our nacelles. Once we get them kicked in we can sustain enough power to really make some headway." Allen said. "Guess that means I'll be heading to engineering as well."
The shuttle drifted towards the badly damaged Intrepid Class ship.
"Take us in there" Jourdan said nodding towards a huge hull breach. On the other side was a stripped cargo bay. "Looks like they don't believe in doors to get to Cargo Bays. Set us down in there. If we can work on getting minimal life support online throughout the cargoba, that would make it easier to load aboard supplies" Jourdan explained.
"Okay, everyone into an EVA suit" She ordered opening the locker and passing them out. "Time for a little spacewalk"
Lizzie was NOT looking forward to this. She hated space walks. They gave her vertigo. But, she needed to look for plants for food and oxygen.
Marek was cool with spacewalks, not that Romulans did them on a regular basis, especially since he did extra training at the academy for repair situations in space. "I know it can be daunting but you aren't alone," he told Lizzie.
"And I'll be able to pull you out, in an emergency." Maddison said, with a nod.
"Good, because if I start to hyperventilate, I won't be screaming for help," Lizzie joked as she finished getting ready.
Patrick said, "Partner up to check suits, it's just common sense, an extra set of eyes now could save you breathing vacuum later."
"An excellent idea. Do you want to assign partners, or let us pick for ourselves?" Maria asked.
"No offence, but if we are about picking partners don't set me up with the one who hyperventilates." Allen said with a nod to Lizzie. "It's like a yawn; if you start, I will too." He gave her a wink.
"And here I hoped you'd give me mouth-to-mouth if I did," she teased.
Marek decided to get Lizzie's attention and came up behind her. "Roar!" He grabbed Lizzie's shoulders and shook her. This would teach her not to ignore him, he prepared himself to duck.
Leo looked at the two and shook his head. He was just along for the ride, and strangely didn't know what he was looking for. "Where do ya'll need me to go," he asked after sealing his EVA.
"Come with one of us. Who knows what we'll find when we get to the ship," Maria said.
"I could use some help freeing up some cable, Captain. It will mean a fair bit of cutting." Allen nodded to his superior.
Maria and Lizzie finished getting into their RVA suits and waited to be paired up for the EVA walk.
"Alright Allen, check me over and we'll get ready to do what we need to." Checking his weapon he clamped it to his back in easy reach. As soon as he would grip the stock or pistol grip, it would release into his grasp. "And then we'll see what we can do for the Von Braun."
Figuring if she went first there'd be someone behind her if she got into trouble, Lizzie made the first jump, using a short rocket boost to guide her in the right direction.
Maria followed after. She wasn't very practiced at this, either, so was relieved when she arrived safely at the other side.
Marek jumped out and upon reaching the other side got to work.
