Sam began to do a slow circle of the building, looking for any signs of a second entrance.
"Why not make a door?" Marek asked pulling out his phaser. "I hardly get to use these." His finger on the trigger button and a grin suddenly appeared on his face.
Noelle looked at the building and circled around the opposite way to make sure the area was clear "Be careful, this could be booby trapped." She said as she looked for anything unusual.
"True, but after 2000 years I'm not too concerned," Sam said. Nonetheless, she was careful to check for anything unusual.
After one full circle of the building, she went back to a section of a side wall."I think this is the best place to go in."
The doctor followed without saying a word.
Marek simply followed.
Sam outlined a section of the wall. "Let's try here." She pulled out her phaser and noded to Marek.
Jason pulled his phaser out, too. Even if security here have their own weapons, he preferred to use his own, just for his own safety. He put a hand to the wall to feel the texture of the old brick, which appeared to feel rough in nature, and let go as they moved deeper into the structure.
While the others created an opening, Noelle stood guard, her eyes scanning the tree line and what she could see beyond. She took out her tricorder in an effort to see if there was anything coming, but it wasn't functioning. She glanced back at the others and then turned her attention back to the front, she walked around the sides of the building to do a better recon.
"I'm bad at history, but this structure looks like something the Romans or Greeks would build on Earth in the B.C. time line. I didn't care for history in the academy, but it was a requirement...", the doctor said.
"It does, doesn't it?" Sam said. She was quite curious to see what was inside.
"Yes, ma'am...it does. I wonder where everybody went as the building is left standing for 2,000 years? There are no markings on the walls, yet," Jason said as he looked carefully at several walls around them.
"Good construction," Sam replied. "Stone doesn't erode as quickly as other substances." They finally broke through the wall. Sam stepped back while the air escaped. She pulled out her tricorder and scanned the air. "It's musty. Wear your breathing masks."
"That's right," he put his mask on, seeing the others followed. "Does the reading work inside here?" Jason's voice sounded hollow like inside the mask. He pulled the tricorder out to see if the inside has any effects to the instrument.
Sam slipped inside the room and flashed her light around. The room was dusty. Dust flecks danced in the light beams. Other than that, the room was empty.
Undaunted, she went from room to room, looking for signs of the ancient inhabitants.
Three beeping sounds came out of Doctor Hart's tricorder. He stopped walking to move his instrument side-to-side and wondered if it is really working. "I'm finding 3 lifesigns that are weak...maybe animal. I'm surprised that this is now working inside here...", he said.
"Interesting," Sam said. "So there's something outside causing the interference. We'll have to check that later. For now, I want to see what we have in here."
They carefully went room by room, checking everything on the main floor. Every room was empty of everything but dust and the occasional pile of rubble. In the far corner, they found a staircase going down.
"Well, this looks promising." Sam grinned at the others and headed down. Again she wished Damon were there.
She headed down the stairs carefully, her tricorder and light as a guide. The stairs opened into a large room. Two doors sat on each of the facing walls. She first checked the room. Then, after finding nothing again, started on the doors.
Noelle had two of the marines that were with her remain at the opening "Sound off if there's a problem." She said "If you get over run, fall back into the building." She ordered as she took off after the rest of the team. She caught the last part of the statement that things were working inside the building.
Noelle walked over to one of the doors and listened at it to see if she heard anything from the other side.
Sam went to another door and scanned it with her tricorder. "Nothing here." She carefully opened the door and looked inside. It had a half dozen empty shelves. She closed the door and moved on to the next door.
The next door contained a small metal tablet with some engravings on it. Sam couldn't translate them immediately, but slipped the tablet into her bag to look at later.
The next door was broken. "Can I get a hand?" she asked one of the Marines, who helped her move the door aside. This room contained a small stone figure much like a toad. This went in her bag with the tablet.
The doctor went into another room while the Captain was next door to it. He searched around the room, finding 3 rats scattered into a hole in the wall. "Well, that was the lifesign on my scanner," he softly said to himself. He found shelves that were empty, but something shiny under the last shelf on the floor caught his attention. He bent on his knees, keeping himself from touching the dirty and dusty floor, and looked under it. The object appeared to be a gold nugget. Just as he picked up the object, the floor gave away and he fell through.
Sam heard the crash and ran into the room. "Doctor? Are you okay?" she called.
Jason moaned as he felt the pain and heard the Captain from above. He couldn't see what he fell into as it is too dark. He looked up at the dim light, figuring that he fell about eight feet, and saw the Captain looking in. "I'm not sure, Captain. It's so dark down here...my foot hit something."
Sam tapped her combadge. "York to Calypso. Lock on to Doctor Hart's signature and beam him directly to sickbay."
There was a good deal of static before Sam heard. "Captain ... communication ... shuttle ... engage."
The transporter tried to lock on the doctor and failed. A moment later it tried again. This time the doctor dematerialized.
"Got him. Return ... bridge..." The static increased for a moment before the connection dropped.
Sam turned to the others. "Let's finish this and get back to the ship as quickly as we can."
The other rooms held nothing of significance. Neither did the hole the doctor fell through.
"Okay, let's get back to the ship and see what we've found."
