Samantha left the XO and headed to the security office to see if she could speak to Nartu.
Nartu was working in his office when Sam rang the chimes.
"Come" said he, while still sitting down.
Sam walked into the room and nodded to the Chief. "Do you have a minute?"
Nartu looked up at Sam, and replied:
"Sure, always. What's on your mind?"
He motioned towards the most comfortable looking chair in the room:
"I just replicated that chair this morning. I thought it would make my office more inviting to guests. Please, have a seat. I'm sure Terran tastes in furniture and decor are more refined than my own. Cardassians have their talents, but home, or in this case, office improvement are not one of them".
"Thank you," Sam said, sitting down. "I'm here on a delicate matter," she said quietly. "I'll be blunt. I'm here to find out what happened with you and Ensign Getal." She paused for a moment. "I want to hear your side of the story, if I may."
Nartu's face didn't change expressions, he had expected this.
"Well, as I told the Captain and our XO, everything is in my report. I pride myself on filling in every detail, no matter how insignificant. And when it comes to honesty, I'd rather get kicked out of Starfleet than lie about ANYTHING. However, what would you like to know?"
"What the confrontation was over. And why," Sam replied. "I don't want to read what you wrote, I want you to tell me what happened. I know you'll tell me the truth."
Nartu felt slightly annoyed, but answered anyway:
"Well, it all started when a couple of days ago when I was assigning my Departmental personnel their duty rosters. Then, of course, came Getal. You know Getal, right?"
"Yes, I've met him," Sam said with a nod. His parting comment hadn't left her with a good impression of the man.
Nartu continued: "Good. Well, I handed him his assignment, and his reaction was to yell at me, tell me I was treating him 'worse than a Bajoran slave girl', and to curse at me in Cardassian! So, naturally, you can see why I was a little pissed. But, like a good officer, I held back my anger. I told him to do his duty and as his Superior Officer it was Getal's duty to obey my orders. Of course, not much good that did."
Nartu stood up, and starting pacing.
Sam shook her head. "Not a good way to start off, is it? So what was it that finally set you off?
Nartu turned toward Lt. York. "Well, after all this, I relieved him of duty on the grounds of insubordination. Since I had given him a chance to explain himself and to correct his mistakes, I felt I had justification to act in that way. I drew my phaser and set it to the minimum setting, hoping I wouldn't have to use it."
Nartu stopped walking and sat down at his desk. "I held out my hand and asked for his phaser and comm badge. Again, he defied my orders. He yelled at me and implied that if we had been on Cardassia, he would have killed me already. Therefore, it was my judgement that I had to neutralize him. He obviously would have resisted had I not knocked him out with my phaser blasts. By implying that he would have killed me had we been on Cardassia, I knew that he would in a matter of seconds attack me in some manner. I stand by my actions, Lieutenant, and I believe you will as well.
"I'm not Cardassian. Or Bajoran," Sam said. "But I don't think I would have pulled a phaser on another Starfleet officer." She shrugged. "Nor would I assume another he would attack me. However, as I said, I'm not Cardassian, so I can't fully understand your view of the situation. I appreciate your explaining it to me."
