A social visit(?)

1,977 words; about a 10 minute read

Mission: Shades of Gray
Location: Chief Intelligence officer's report

It was not often, one saw a woman walking down a Starship's corridors, in civilian clothing, with an SCIS badge hanging out of her left breast pocket. While Janine did, usually, wear Fleet standard clothing, and don the single SCIS pip on her collar, whenever she had an active case going, she made it an effort to make it clear, she was not a Fleet Officer, and the brotherhood of the Fleet was not going to be used to cover up anyone's indiscretions.

Nodding to the Security Officers, and eventually, the random officers in the halls, and eventually still, the Intelligence Officers in the Intelligence deck, she noted the deserved psychological effect of her appearance hitting the crew.

Active SCIS investigations put everyone slightly on edge. Especially when they weren't hidden, as Daniel Daniels preferred to do. It put people guilty of crimes even further on edge. She made no attempt to actively notice anyone, but out of the corner of her eye, she'd catch someone sweating, or someone taking just a little too much interest in her, and she'd jot it down on a PADD, about half a hallway down the hall, to observe them more carefully.

When she reached the Chief Intelligence Officer's office, she knew full well, that protocol was to be observed. Civilians, or non-coms were given as much clearance as anyone else, if their duties required it, and her's certainly did, however observing protocol as a fleet officer would, made fleet officers far more useful, and conducive to regular discussions about ongoing investigations. The Chief of Intelligence was not someone she could alienate.

A deep breath, a careful scan over her notes, and she entered the Intelligence department.

-------------------------------------------------

"Deputy Field Marshall Donovan, to see Lieutenant Wolfe, please." Janine said to the receptionist, keeping her voice calm, and almost cheerful. She kept a somewhat neutral expression, and made sure that her badge was clearly visible.

"One Moment Please." Lora, Damions Receptionist (apparently) put down her PaDD, which was at an article in a Federation fashion magazine and hit a console at her desk. "Mister Wolfe?"

"Go ahead, Lora" His voice came back on the other end

"A Deputy Field Marshall Donovan is here to see you. Are you there?"

You could almost hear his hand being placed over his face over the comm. "Yes, Lora. I answered you, therefore I am here. Please send her in." He cut the link after a sigh.

"He will see you, Ma'am." She picked up the PaDD and went back to her reading.

Janine entered, and looked over her shoulder at the receptionist. She shook her head, before looking back at Mister Wolfe. "Hard to find good help, some times, isn't it?" Janine asked, with a bit of a chuckle. "I haven't had a good chuckle in a while, but she strikes me as no laughing matter."

"They said I needed a receptionist and they gave me her. Show's you how much exactly they value my job, Ma'am." Damion stood up from behind his desk and extended his hand. "Lieutenant JG Damion Wolfe and whatever it was, I didn't do it." He smiled and added a slight laugh.

Donovan shook the mans hand, and chuckled, as she nodded. "I'm quite aware, Mister Wolfe. I'm here, because you've been investigating the governmental, and political happenings on Michnar VII. I recently did a crime scene analysis, and psychological profile of the recent bombing of the Magistrate's office. I assume that such reports, which wouldn't normally find your desk, may assist you, in your investigation." Donovan said. "Sadly, interdepartmental discussions do not occur that often, these days, with departments, notably, Security, distrusting others. If I am to act as the acting SCIS Supervisory agent, which I am, I deem it necessary to stop those procedures, as you may have information which can assist me, and vice versa."

"Thats funny. I was under the impression the it was the other way around. That Starfleet Intelligence didn't trust anyone else." He sat back down in his chair behind his desk. A Bat'leth with the points facing down, one of his Retractable swords unfolded and facing downward, handle from the bottom, and lastly an Ushann-tor with the bladed end facing upward were clearly visible on the wall behind him. He reached for his black coffee and took a sip. "With everyone distrusting everyone else, its hard to understand how anything gets done now a days."

"If it were not for Supervisory ag..." Donovan closed her eyes briefly, and looked down at her hands. "Acting Security Chief Daniels, the paperwork would not be done, as of late. Acting Lieutenant Kyt wasn't big on the non-combatant side of Security. Needless to say, with everyone distrusting everyone else in the security, and related, departments, I'm not necessarily surprised by the events of late." She handed Damion the file. "That's everything I collected. Everything I wrote down. Everything I sketched. Every word my investigators said on that crime scene. Samples of DNA found at the crime scene. All of it."

She looked him straight in the eye. "And if you want to know why, I'll tell you. It's an established fact, that Starfleet Intelligence does things that aren't always ship-duty related. If you file this stuff, under AWOL officers, there'll be inconspicuous looking ins, and looking outs. It'll happen. A year from now. A month, a year, or two. Some day, she'll be found. And some day, she'll be brought to justice."

A PADD was placed on top of the file. It cycled through 81 pictures, the same 81 pictures, every minute.

"First." He put the file down on his desk and then took a sip of his coffee. "I think you need to get something straight. We are on the same side. In now way am I going to hide anything or hinder any investigation to regarding Lieutenant Kyt. Personally, I didn't know her as well. I only just got here and didn't get the proper time to get myself acclimated to the ship and her crew. Second. I feel the same way as you do. Her actions were in excusable. She cost the lives of innocents and in no way is she to be allowed to escape with her crimes. Murder is what she caused and Justice is what she will receive." He leaned back in his chair and took a sip of his coffee. "Starfleet Intelligence is just and anxious to apprehend her as Starfleet Security is." Damion finished by placing his coffee back on his desk. "Are we at an understanding?"

"No, Mister Wolfe, I believe you misunderstand me." Donovan said. "I'm well aware that we're on the same side. Some times, I think other members of Security aren't. I'm handing you this, because if it were Kyt, she'd tell me to keep things strictly in Security, and that's wrong. I don't want you to tell me what you know about Kyt. I know more than I'd care to. I want you to take my report, in every detail, and pass it up to your superiors who aren't on this ship. You don't have to tell them how you got it, just tell them it's something SCIS isn't equipped to handle." She put a finger on the PADD, with the 81 pictures. "Regardless of who these people are, or what they did, they had families, and not all of them were directly related to any kind of military coup down there. Of them, some of them deserve answers. And Justice. Security, nor SCIS will find her, if she's in the wind. Some day, Intelligence might. I want them to know who they are dealing with."

"So your tell me, that you did your investigation and reported to your superiors. They in turn told you to hand this file to Starfleet Intelligence because and I quote. "It's something SCIS isn't equipped to handle". Now either your telling me that she isn't someone who is gonna make a mistake because you guys trained her and wont be found, or your telling me Security is gonna look the other way because its one of their own?" Damion questioned as he looked at he file and then to her.

"Close." Donovan said, with a nod. "The Marine Corps trained her, but she's ex-bajoran resistance. She wrote that explosion with an artist's quill. It makes her look dead. SCIS can't handle black-ops-style trained officers, and the bajoran resistance is close enough. If she makes a mistake, it's intentional. And, as to Ensign Daniels..."

She looked down. "There's an investigation there, as well. Jaxara, and Kyt both. Excess use of force. No reports. Dereliction of duty. So honestly, Mister Wolfe, no, I'm not sure if Security is going to do a damn thing, if they do, actually, stumble across her. Especially if the one person who knows her best, Ensign Stran, finds her."

"Black-Ops-style training is something I know all too well, Donovan. Starfleet Intelligence is gonna take a look at this file and most likely insist that an immediate investigation of their own commence. Complete with interviews. Background checks. Past Incident Reports and all the trimmings. They are gonna want to make sure Security didn't miss anything. Probably assuming your theory is correct. Making sure nothing was missed in order to cover her tracks, but I can tell your thorough. I have this sense about people and with you its very strong. Almost shouting." Damion sighed as he took another sip of his coffee, finishing it up.

He was quiet for a moment, staring at the file as if trying to make something of it before he looked back to Donovan. "I'll do what I can to make sure it reaches the right people. Passing it to a few people I have worked with over the years that I personally trust. Ensure secure channels all the way. I'll make you my personal assurance that when she is caught, I will be there personally to ensure she makes it all the way to where she belongs. Agreed?"

"Past Incident Reports." Donovan said, withdrawing a PADD from the small of her back. It did not look like a normal PADD. It was thinner, flexible, and easily concealed. She pressed a thumb to the device.

"Thumb Print Recognized. Internal Affairs Voiceprint Clearance required." The device stated.

"Donovan Alpha, Delta, Seven." Donovan said.

"Clearance Accepted." The device stated.

"Transfer all past incident reports on Daniels, Daniel, Jaxara, Lorne, Tramira, Kyt, Stran to Intelligence Personal Access Data Device in possession of Lieutenant Wolfe." Donovan stated. The device beeped twice. "You." She said, pointing at Damion. "SCIS assigns an undercover Internal Affairs officer to every dispatch. As that's already been compromised, you may as well credit these files, as such. I believe Miss Levue will have other, related requests for you."

He picked up his PADD and looked over the information, to make sure he got all the information. Damion nodded and then looked to her. "I'll look out for her." He said as he leaned back against slightly in his chair and cleared his throat. "Anything else I need to be aware of? Will I be the only one who knows she is a SCIS agent?"

"Everyone knows I'm an SCIS agent. Everyone now knows I'm an undercover IA SCIS agent. Lieutenant Junior Grade Levue is the new Chief Security and Tactical Officer." Donovan said, "Sorry for the mess-up."

"Deputy Marshal Donovan to the Chief Security and Tactical Officer's Office. Immediately." Came a somewhat harsh voice.

"Gotta go!" Donovan said, getting up, out of her chair. "Hope to talk to you again, sometime", She added, as she walked out the door.
