[OLD]

The outside looked like a war-ravaged demilitarized zone. Buildings were covered by what appeared to be boarded-up windows. No one walked the barren streets. Rubble from semi-demolished buildings littered the ground.

[NEW]

'Trent, you go right, I'll go left. Meet you on the other side," Kara said.

Trent nodded and started his way to the right of the building. His hand came up and tugged on his vest so that it fit more snuggly and his other hand tightly wrapped around his carbine's weapon grip. He wasn't nervous, but something about this place felt 'off'.

Kara tapped on her combadge."Melo to Shintaku. Let us know if you see anything coming. We're checking the ground."

"Chi to Melo Roger."

Trent looked over the building closest to where they were, a dilapidated three story warehouse. The windows to the building were all boarded up and a thick fence boarded it's perimeter. He tapped his comm badge "Kushner to Melo. Sergeant, there is a building here I wouldn't mind checking out on the east side. Looks pretty well caged off, not like the other buildings around." He stood in place waiting for her response.

"Let Shintaku know what you're doing and take someone with you."

Trent nodded. "Trent to Shintaku. I'm headed to that gated building off to the east, might need eyes on it."

"Trent to Marks. Kiren, buddy, meet me at my location okay?"

"On my way." Came the response.

Kara and Melendez split off and began carefully checking the exterior of the building for booby traps and secret openings. If the black market was as active as they'd been led to believe, there would undoubtedly be other ways into the building.

The front of the building was cleared and they turned the first corner. "Over here," Melendez said, indicating a small metal box with a pipe going into the ground. "What is it?"

"I don't know." Kara pulled out a tricorder and scanned it. "Some sort of transceiver." She tapped on her combadge. "Melo to Tramira. Come out the main doors to your right. We found something."

Kyt came out, quickly. "Present." She looked down, at the device. "Someone's cellular device. Outdated communications device. Runs on Radio waves, and a type of radiation. Still a common network to find on a great many planets. Had them on Bajor, compliments of the Cardassians. They didn't want to give us anything too advanced." Kyt said, picking it up. "It appears to be actively in a call." She turned it off. "It's like our comm-badge. Except that it requires the number of the device you want to call. It seems to have been called by..."

Restricted Number. The device stated, in the natural language of the people. The tricorder translated it. Kyt scowled at it.

"I'll take this for examination later." She said, depositing it in her pocket. "It shouldn't be too much work, once I have a spare hand."

"Better you than me," Melendez said under her breath.

Kara nodded. "Thank you, Lieutenant. We'll let you know if we find anything else."

Kyt nodded. "The odd thing, though." Kyt said. "It's a personal device. Like our comm-badges. They usually aren't disposable. If anyone comes by asking for it, give me a call, and I'll bring it out to them."

Kara nodded. "Will do, ma'am."

While Kyt headed back inside, Kara and Melendez continued around the building.

On the far side, they found a small opening that led to an underground storage room of some kind. There were several crates of supplies lined against a side wall. Kara and Melendez began a very careful search of the room.

The walls were rock with some sort of plaster over the top. Except for the back wall. It appeared to be wooden -- the same sort of wall that marked the interior of the warehouse. Kara began to run her fingers across the boards. It was slow, tedious work, but it finally paid off as she found a section of board that didn't match the rest. Feeling around it she found a small indentation and pushed. Click

A section of wall slid back to reveal a tiny space behind a large stack of crates. Kara signaled to Melendez and slipped inside. As she suspected, she was now inside the warehouse.

"Captain Mangalia," she called. "I think you'll want to see this."

Leo walked over, and looked at the panel. "Cover me," he said, spinning the carbine around and flicking off the safety. Clicking on the onboard flash light, he began to sweep, working his way quietly and quickly.

Kara covered him while he swept the room. They found one other opening. She let Leo deal with the second opening, which led directly outside, and went back to the secret room. Using a thumb print lock, she secured both entrances so that only Starfleet personnel could enter or leave. That done, she proceeded to set up the room as a Marine stronghold. It would allow them a second line of defense if they had to sneak around the building.

Melo and Melendez finished their sweep of the building's exterior, finding nothing more than the opening Mangalia had secured.

"Melo to Shintaku and Kushner. Building is secured." That done, she headed back inside to report to the Captain.
