Mission: The Forests of Mythraeli
Location: Conference Room

[Conference Room, USS Calypso]

[OLD]

Talri had been listening intently to Tav's idea. It was good that he had come up with something. Communications was, after all, not her area of expertise, and the small breakthrough she had made had been hard-won. If he could make something useful out of it, so much the better, and she had found herself nodding in approval.

[NEW]

She raised an eyebrow faintly as Kyt made her request. The woman did not have a scientific mind. Not that at this point it came as any sort of surprise to Talri.

"If it's a form of life I just hope what we're going to try to do won't cause it harm, but then, we need to get our people back," Tav said, a solemn tone about his voice. "I can get started on the comms modifications straight away."

He looked to the Captain and the others for their approval.

"Agreed," Sam said. "We need to get our people back, but not at the expense of whatever is down there -- as long as it's not hostile. There's no reason to harm innocent plant or animal life if we can do anything to prevent it."

Doctor Bowen sat straight in her chair as she looked at the Captain. "Don't forget that my medical officer has a chip implanted behind his ear...like a beacon. Since Doctor Hart goes on a lot of away teams, he preferred to have this chip in case he ever gets lost. Maybe it will be hard to locate it because of the interference on this planet?"

"It does appear that way Doctor, the interference is blocking everything and it has to be the flora; what else could it be?" Mak asked.

A moment ago he thought it was an undetectable form of life, now it's the plants. Tav couldn't help but think Mak had a vivid imagination, but of course he could be right. It seemed much more likely that something jamming would be technological though.

"From what I understand, Doctor," Tav said, hoping that someone would correct him if he was wrong. "This interference is blocking any and all of our transmissions. If the chip works on either RF or subspace then it will probably have been jammed too, but we could improve our sensor resolution around that frequency to give us a better picture."

"I've never heard of plants can interrupt the atmosphere...or have any kind of intelligence," Leanne said as she looked at Mak and Tav. "Their cells are very different from the human body, too. Well, I was hoping that his chip will help locating."

"It still might," Ronnie interrupted. "We've tried scanning for the ID, to no avail. But if we can boost the civilian signal to cut through the interference, we might be able to piggyback a scan to locate him and the rest of the away team."

"Let's try it. If it works, we'll have a few seconds to send and receive data. It might be enough to get the answers we need," Sam decided.

"Great," was all Leanne could say at the moment. At least something might help, she thought as she leaned back in her chair.

Mak became impatient and wanted to do something. "We better get to it," he prompted, though not in an aggressive way.

"Only if Talri agrees," Ronnie said. "We're not going to rush into this if it's not going to work. We could end up doing more harm than good."

Talri nodded slowly. 'This is not my area of expertise,' she told the others. 'If Lieutenant Ross believes that it will work, then I have no objection. We must find a way to make contact.'

"We can try, we're certainly not going to harm the technology, I've no idea what we will do if it is a plant," Tav commented.

"I guess attempting to try and find a way to communicate with the intelligence is crazy?" Mak asked Ronnie.

"We don't know what it is yet Mak," Tav commented. "If we identify it as intelligence then it's worth having a go, but until then it would be like shouting at a rock and expecting a conversation back."

Ronnie nodded in agreement with Tav before she answered Mak. "It's only crazy if it doesn't work. If it does work, we call it first contact."

'Indeed,' agreed Talri. 'Not having the benefit of hindsight, our only option is to proceed.'

"Then let's adjourn this meeting and meet on the bridge in fifteen minutes?" Sam looked to Tav for confirmation. "We'll test your theory then."

Tav nodded in reply, fifteen minutes was a bit of a rush with thirty-odd decks to navigate, but he would manage it.
