Personality & Traits

General Overview Talri is a traditionalist Vulcan, deeply spiritual and committed to following the teachings of Surak. She rarely if ever allows herself any emotional response, and views such behaviour as weak when seen in other Vulcans. She is devoted to her husband and children, and does not see any inherent contradiction between this fact and her current separation from them. Talri is very private, and difficult to get to know. However, those that manage to get on her good side will find her softer and more forgiving than she first appears.

Like many Vulcans, Talri is a touch-telepath. For this reason, she avoids unnecessary physical contact. She is also a strict vegan, and her tastes in food turn towards the simple and ascetic.
Strengths & Weaknesses Her dedication to cthia, that is logic, allows Talri a clarity of judgement and purpose untroubled by emotion. She reacts well during crises, and has a philosophical quote for seemingly any setback she may encounter. Self-reliant and confident, she is unafraid to pursue her goals - or to change them, should it seem necessary. Growing up in a more remote Vulcan desert region has made her strong and physically fit from a young age.

Talri has very little experience with offworlders or non-Vulcans. Humans in particular strike her as odd, and she is as of yet uncertain about how to deal with them. Her rejection of emotion means that she has little tolerance for the problems of others, especially when her offers of a logical solution are unwelcome. New to Starfleet, Talri is still unfamiliar with many of its customs and organizational procedures, particularly since she is not aboard a Vulcan-majority ship!
Ambitions Talri has joined Starfleet as the next stage in her journey of self-discovery, as she puts it 'the outward walking of an inward path.' As such, her ambitions are mostly very personal and private. To advance her career, however, she would like to discover something new to add to the star charts she has spent years revising and perfecting. She also harbours a long-term desire to achieve kolinahr, the purging of all emotion, although she freely admits it may be many years until she is ready
Hobbies & Interests As a practitioner since childhood of the Vulcan martial art ke-tarya, Talri trains regularly, and she hopes that she will be able to continue to do this by utilizing the holodeck. She is also skilled in khaiya-tal, a form of archery. Much of her free time is spent in meditation and reflection, and she continues to write about her insights, having already published two books for children on the subject whilst studying at the temples. She enjoys spiritual music, particularly that produced at the Temple of Lihsi-vai, although she maintains that recordings do not to justice to the experience of hearing the chanting and music first-hand.
Languages Vulcan, Federation Standard, some Rihannsu

Personal History Talri was born in 2346, in the small desert village of Korindet-Sivek, on T'Khasi, known offworld as Vulcan. She was the eldest child of T'Veda and Seldan, and was named after her maternal great-grandmother, who was then the family matriarch. From a very early age she was taught t'san-s'at, the way to eliminate emotion, as well as the disciplines of physical and mental control. She was a bright and serious child, and dedicated herself to her studies, earning the approval of her family. At the age of seven, in accordance with custom, she was betrothed to Sovrek, a boy from a neighbouring village.

In 2356 Talri underwent the rite of Kahs-wan. She spent ten days alone in the desert, surviving only by her own skills and courage. Talri had heard that this trial sometimes killed young Vulcans, but her family seemed confident of her ability to succeed, and thus so too was she. It was, however, a very trying ordeal for her. Talri had trouble finding water, and remembers at one stage sending herself into a deep meditative state, slowing her very breath and heart rate to limit the energy she required. She remembers her utter stillness as a pack of predators passed by, the certainty of her fate should they spot her. More than the hardships, however, she recalls the wonder of the starlight in the darkness, and the look in her mother's eyes at Talri returned, not only alive but looking more assured, mature, from having discovered her own capabilities and having triumphed.

The next years were spent in study. Talri relished the acquisition of knowledge and knew at a relatively young age the field that was to become her passion - stellar cartography. As she retells the story, it has much to do with the stars above Korindet-Sivek in the desert, the vastness of the sky - but it would be equally true to say that this is where young Talri's aptitude was strongest. She graduated near the top of her class from T'Laika College, aged seventeen, and almost immediately began her further studies in Astrometrics at Shi'Kahr Academy. Talri's father had thought to send her to the Vulcan Science Academy, but she protested, explaining that the city of Shi'Kahr was far closer, and their program almost, if not quite so prestigious. She wanted to remain closer to home. Swayed not only by Talri's conviction but by the logical arguments she set forward in favor of it, her family agreed.

It was not until the last year of Talri's studies that she began to falter in what had heretofore been a relentless pursuit of her goals. Suddenly, Talri found herself unable to concentrate. Even more distressing to her, she found her emotional discipline slipping, something no amount of meditation seemed able to correct. After shouting at one of her teachers and storming from the lecture hall, Talri's regret was such that she knew something needed to be done. She returned home, only for her mother to see the problem at once. Talri, then 21, was entering pon farr. She was reunited with Sovrek, called away from his own studies, and with no objections from either, the pair were married.

Talri later returned to ShiKahr to complete her degree, but, drawn as ever to what she considered to be deeper, more spiritual knowledge, she elected not to progress to work at the Astrometrics Institude, but to study at the foot of Mount Seleya, at the Kurat Temple Complex, just as Sovrek was doing. Talri would spend four years here, exploring the limits of her knowledge and abilities, studying philosophy and ethics, and gaining in awareness-of-self, and in doing so, awareness-of-interconnection. During this time, she would write and publish a book, 'Meditations on Kurat,' intended for preteen children, as well as compiling many private writings into her journals, which she keeps with her to this day.

In 2373, aged 27, Talri left Kurat and walked out into the desert, believing that what she next needed to learn could only be there. She found her way eventually to the tiny, isolated Temple of Lihsi-vai, and this was to be her home for the next two years, although much of her time in meditation was spent not in the temple but out in the open. In this time she wrote more journals and a second book for children, 'Lihsi-vai: Meditations on the Desert,' intended for those preparing for Kahs-wan.

At her deepest points of insight, however, Talri began to realize that the contemplative life in itself was not enough, that the inner changes she had wrought needed application. She needed, she decided, to go back to where she had been before, guided by her newfound strength and insight. It came as a surprise to the other temple devotees who had been her friends and companions, but Talri knew better than to ignore her deep intuition. She returned to Shi'Kahr, to the Academy, and earned herself an advanced degree in Astrometrics, after which she finally felt ready to take up work at the Astrometrics Institute.

Talri worked as a stellar cartographer for five years, finding the work both interesting and fulfilling. She used the data collected by those working in the field, collating and comparing it, and deciding where and how the official star charts ought to be modified. She marvelled at the new phenomena that were discovered, often conducting her own research, at second-hand, on the stranger occurrences.

She and Sovrek, living together again as they had at Kurat, also grew closer as a couple, and in time decided they were ready for children. They would have a son, Liet, in 2382, followed in 2384 by their daughter Amril. While caring for her young children, Talri undertook work for the Institute as a consultant, solving some of the problems that other cartographers could not. However, it seemed to Talri as if something was still calling her away. Her steps outward had not been large enough, she realized. If she wanted to do this job well, she needed to go offworld. She needed to be the one to discover these additions to the charts, to give herself a perspective other than the limited one of T'Khasi.

After discussing the matter with Sovrek, Talri left Liet and Amril in the care of her parents, still in the village of Korindet-Sivek, and attended the Vulcan branch of Starfleet Academy. Given her existing knowledge and experience, the classes she needed to qualify as a Starfleet officer took her less than a year to complete. Once qualified, she eagerly awaited her assignment - only to be taken by surprise when it was to the USS Calypso. The Calypso did not seem a bad posting to Talri, it was only that she had expected - she had assumed that her ship would mostly be crewed by Vulcans. The Calypso, decidedly, was not.

It was not in Talri's nature to turn down a challenge, however, and she told herself that she would not have been sent there without reason, and that much could be learnt from an experience that might seem difficult at first. Resolved to make the best of things, and to make her newest career move a success, she left her homeworld for the first time to set off for the starship that was to become her new home.
