Mission:
The Forests of Mythraeli
Location: Stellar Cartography
Timeline: Backpost - Talri's arrival
Late in the afternoon of her first day at work aboard the Calypso, Talri was still browsing the star charts, noting down the subtle differences from the ones she was used to. Hearing someone at her door, she called 'Come in!' this time remembering to use Standard and not her native Vulcan.
Nava walked into the office and smiled "I'm Lt Nava. The diplomatic officer aboard the ship. I heard we had a new crewmember and wanted to introduce myself." She said walking over to Talri, yet keeping a respectful distance from the Vulcan, not wanting to invade her personal space.
A Ferengi in Starfleet was unusual enough. A female Ferengi in the diplomatic section? Even more improbable. Enough, in fact, to pique Talri's interest. She looked up at Nava and nodded. 'Do sit down,' she said politely. 'My name is Talri, and you are correct. This is my first day aboard this ship.'
Nava sat down "I'm Nava and yes it's odd to have a Ferengi in the Star Fleet Diplomatic Corps." She said "How are you finding the Calypso?" She asked.
Talri raised an eyebrow. 'Have you telepathic abilities, Lieutenant Nava?' she enquired. 'Or is it simply that everyone you meet eventually remarks upon the unusual nature of your chosen career?'
"It's mostly that people comment on my choice of career path." She said "It's highly unusual to have a Ferengi in Star Fleet, let alone to have one in the Diplomatic Corps. It has been a heated discussion in my home with my parents." Nava laughed "I suppose I would have been better in business but I enjoy the challenges."
'It is good to challenge oneself,' commented Talri, nodding in approval. 'That, in fact, is one of the reasons I am here, although to answer your question, I have not been here quite long enough to decide what I think of it yet.'
"What do you enjoy doing in your free time?" Nava asked as she sat enjoying Talri's company.
'I spend much time in meditation,' Talri replied. 'I also practise ke-tarya. I find that physical activity does much to focus the mind. I read often, and I write...' She tilted her head slightly, interested, 'And you?' she asked. 'I confess I do not know much about the recreational activities available aboard a starship. Perhaps you would tell me which pastimes you prefer?'
Nava smiled "I play piano and use the holodecks mostly." She said "I also find that I enjoy reading and spending time in the lounge."
Talri nodded. 'I find holodeck technology quite fascinating,' she said. 'I have not yet had opportunity to try it for myself.'
"It is definitely relaxing." She said "Especially a nice waterfall and a quiet evening scene. I often use that to meditate in the evenings or when I need to focus my mind." Nava said "I've widened my horizons in many areas and found that a simpler form of Vulcan meditation is very useful."
'It is,' Talri agreed readily. 'It helps one's focus tremendously, although it is quite a surprise to find it practised so far from home. If you do not mind the question, who was it that taught you?'
"One of my professors at the Academy. I was very impulsive and Prof. T'Stal was most helpful in helping me learn to meditate." She said "I think that was the first time I ever saw a Vulcan actually come close to showing emotion." She said "I managed to push his buttons." Nava laughed "I practice it now to help keep myself focused and grounded."
Talri nodded. 'It is quite difficult to...as you say, push the buttons of one of our people. And yet he was able to teach you. Perhaps I should tell it to my son. He too is at an age now where he can be overly impulsive.'
Nava grinned "How old is your son?" She asked "And after I started working the T'Stal, I became less impulsive and now find it rather an annoying trait of mine. So I try to keep it in check." She said
'Control of one's emotionally-directed behaviors is important,' Talri agreed. 'My son Liet is six years old. It is a difficult age for many Vulcan children. I am confident, however, that in time he will overcome the difficulties he faces in fully embracing logic.'
Nava nodded and stood "It was nice to meet you. Let me know if you need anything." She said bowing her head slightly to Talri.
'Thank you,' said Talri, inclining her own head in return. 'I am pleased that we met.'
