[USS Calypso - Science Lab]
Sakura had been instructed by Lieutenant Faye to head to the science lab where it seemed that Lieutenant O'Connor who was in charge of the Science Department needed some type of assistance on something that they were working. She had glad to get a break from working the communications channel. She had listened to enough traffic from the three sides on the planet. She needed a break. So when she was given this assignment she welcomed it. She walked into the science lab with a smile and looked around.
Ronnie looked up from a map of the sector and smiled. "Can I help you?"
Sakura looked at the Lieutenant slightly unsure. "Well, perhaps. I was told by Lieutenant Faye that Science needed my help with some sort of communication issue...."
"And you are?" Ronnie asked. She didn't intend to sound rude. She just wasn't sure what sort of help Lieutenant Faye had in mind until she knew who the person was.
"Ensign Sakura Miyazaki, Communications officer." Sakura responded
"Ronnie Lancaster, science officer," Ronnie said. She led the way into a small lab. "The neural implant receives a signal from a booster on the planet's surface. That device, in turn, receives a signal from somewhere else. To date we've discovered over a hundred boosters. No telling how many are scattered around the planet. Most seem to be around the main city. What we need is to find out how they're sending the signal and from where. If we can tap into it -- hijack it -- we can stop the mind control and maybe send a present back to whoever's behind it."
Sakura listened to what the Lieutenant had to say but she had no idea what she was talking about. "I apologize Lieutenant Lancaster but what exactly are we talking about?"
Ronnie blinked. "I thought you'd been briefed." She shook her head. "No matter. Madam Onasi had a neural implant in the back of her neck that appears to be some sort of mind control device. One of the away teams found some booster packs that send a signal to the neural implant. I've narrowed it down, but there's some sort of encryption that prevents me actually locating the frequency. That's why I need help."
"Another encryption...great..." Sakura said under her breath as she listened to what Lt. Lancaster had to say. She nodded and smiled at Ronnie. "Well, I can take a look at what you have so far and hopefully with both of us working on it we can figure out a way around it."
Ronnie nodded. She turned on the force field and powered up the signal to show Sakura what she'd uncovered so far. "Now, let's see what you can do with that," she said.
Jerry wandered in and leaned against the doorway, overlooking the two women. "Anything I need to know about that's happening around here? Captain's not breathing down my neck yet - but she's pretty darn close."
Sakura didn't respond she allowed the science officer she was working with to do just that as she leaned in closer examining the signal that was being displayed. "Intriguing..." She said it under her breath and began using the console. "I have seen a similar pattern once before..." She hadn't realized that she was speaking out loud as she worked.
"Still working on it, sir," Ronnie replied. Then to Sakura she said, "You have? Where?"
Sakura looked over to Ronnie. She just realized she had said that out loud. She smiled. "I saw it at the Academy. It was for a class project that I did in my last year there. This frequency hasn't been used in everyday use for at least four centuries." Sakura said as she looked back down at the computer console.
"400 years? From where? See if it works with the setup we have here," Ronnie said.
"If I remember correctly there was once a civilization that once lived close to the Orion territory boarded. The Orion's decided to expand their territory and they conquered the planet and brought this civilization into their Empire. At least that's what the recorded history." Sakura explained as she looked at the setup. "This should work."
"The Captain may have information in the science database on the culture. Give it a go and we'll see if it works," Ronnie said.
Sakura looked at Ronnie. "One other thing, during the research I discovered that at times the Orion Syndicate would use this type of frequency." She turned back to the console. "Here goes nothing." She pressed a few buttons on the console and the test began.
After a while, Ronnie turned to Sakura. "It works. We've made three successful attempts. Looks like you've got a winner."
Sakura nodded. "Yes, it does seem that way." She smiled at Ronnie. "Hopefully we will be able to take this from the testing platform to practical use."
"What do you have in mind?" Ronnie asked. This looked promising, but she wasn't sure what the next step should be.
