After Doctor Hart advised her to leave sickbay to get some rest, Leanne couldn't argue with him of excuses to continue to work. She rolled over on her bed, and stared at the ceiling as she was unable to sleep. Leanne laid there for a minute or two and sat up.
She sneezed a few times and picked up some tissues at the side of her bed. "I hate being sick," she told herself. "At least it is a mild case of the cold like symptoms."
Leanne looked at the monitor on her desk across the room, and thought about calling her parents. "It's probably late...maybe." She got up and went over to sit down in front of the monitor. She touched a few buttons to request a call to Earth in the city of San Antonio in the state of Texas.
The Federation screen logo changed to show a picture of her mother.
"Hi, mother," Leanne said with a nasal sound of a stopped up nose.
"Hi, are you okay?"
Seeing that her mother was concerned, "Just a cold. I'm resting in my quarters and I was bored, so I thought I'd call you."
"I heard that," her father said in the background. He came up to the screen to sit next to her mother. "What's going on?"
Knowing that her father's concerned was to do with him being a physician, Leanne gave him a smile. "Daddy, you don't need to be worried about me. I just have a cold...", she paused to sneeze.
"Bless your heart, sweetheart," her mother said.
"Thanks, mother...", she said with a smile.
"Did you take some Enitherocin?" Her father asked.
Knowing that the medicine can kill the cold virus less than twelve hours, Leanne knew that she doesn't have a cold. She had to keep quiet about some strange virus that has not been determined yet. "No, I did not, daddy. They are doing lab work to see what kind of cold I have, before they know for sure what I should take. We've had two others that came down with this. Don't worry..."
"Okay, baby. Just get some rest and plenty of fluids...you know that. I'm going to let you talk to your mother. Love you," he got up and left the screen.
"I take it everything is okay?" Her mother asked.
"Yes, mother. I called to talk to you because I was bored laying in bed."
"How is working for Calypso? I can't imagine you being in charge."
Leanne smiled. "Good. I like my position and taking charge. Well, how's the ranch? All the horses still in good shape?"
"Same as usual. Horses are fine. Seems quiet after all you kids moved out."
"Do you need me to come back home?" Leanne joked.
"Oh," she smiled as she knew that her daughter is joking with her. "Maybe come visit us sometime. I still make those pecan pies and have watermelons here. Mouth watering yet?"
Leanne laughed, "Mother! Don't tempt me...", she sneezed.
"Sweetheart, you better go get some rest...just like what your dad said. I don't want to keep you up. Maybe come see us for Thanksgiving?"
"I have to see how things go...I'm starting to get tired now," Leanne said with a yawn.
"Good night, Leanne. Get some sleep and call me anytime if you need something. I love you, sweetheart."
With a smile, "Good night, mother. Love you, too." She watched the screen changed back to a Federation logo. She yawned again as she got up and went over to her bed. Leanne pulled the covers back and got in. She called for the lights to dim and turned over to her side, as her eyelids slowly came to a close.
