Sam sat down in the living room of her and Damon's room in New Paris and tapped her combadge. "York to Sinclair. What is the status of the Calypso?" She wanted to know what was going on with the mercenaries and how the ship was faring.
Karma glanced at the view screen and tried not to laugh as he tapped his combadge and said, "Now's not a good time to talk, Skipper. We have a small issue we're trying to deal with at the moment."
"Do I need to be there?" she asked. "Is the mercenary situation getting worse?"
"We're currently under attack by two of the mercenary ships," Karma said after a moment, "so coming back to the ship at the moment is possible." Karma paused to assess the situation on the view screen then added, "We have the situation under control."
"Keep me informed, Commander. York out."
She walked over to Damon and sat down. "I don't like this," she said, wrapping her arms around him.
"Neither do I." He admitted "But there is little we can do about it now. They will be fine, they have the same training we do and are just as capable in a fight."
"I know," she said softly. "But it's my ship and I wish I were up there."
Damon felt the same way about his Marines. He knew Leroy would do his job and lead them well, but he was still worried that something might get overlooked.
He kissed the top of her head and looked down at her in his arms. "We need to take our minds off it. Let's talk about the conference."
"Delon was invited to dinner by the head of the Alliance tonight. She could be a valuable ally," Sam said, "He was going to stop by here after. I hope his not showing up means everything's going well."
Damon snorted "You expect him to have had that good a time, do you?"
"I don't know what to expect. I only hope." She laid her head on his shoulder and sighed. "I know I should wait. It's probably nothing more than a friendly gesture on her part." She looked up at him with a wry grin. "I hate waiting."
Damon let out a laugh as he shook his head. "You're with me. I kind of figured that waiting would be one of your expertise's by now."
There were a dozen things she wanted to say in answer to that question. She did want more from their relationship, but she didn't want to push him and risk losing him. It had also been an incredibly busy year. Instead, she buried her face against his shoulder. "I love you," was all she said.
"I love you too." He said with a smile at her reaction. He knew that he was holding out when it came to their relationship but he wanted to be sure. He was sure about her, he wasn't sure about himself.
"What I don't love," he continued after a moment "is the idea of being stuck in that conference room again listening to those faction heads get no where with their talks. Just a whole lot of posturing."
"I know. Neither do I. There is so much anger and mistrust it's a wonder they agreed to be in the same room with each other." She looked up at him with an impish grin. "You at least have the option of returning to the Calypso when Karma takes care of the mercenary ships. I have to stay down here -- at least until they agree to some sort of truce."
Part of her was glad the conversation had shifted. She'd had a fight just getting Damon to admit he loved her and wanted to be with her. As much as she wanted more, she was afraid if she pushed the issue, he'd leave. She hugged him tightly for a moment. "We should go to bed. I don't have the luxury of sleeping in tomorrow." Although it would be nice to skip the morning session of the conference, it wouldn't look good.
"No, it probably wouldn't considering their reaction of us being here. It's a shame too, I might have tried to convince you to stay in bed a bit longer if we wouldn't be missed." He gave her a sly grin.
Sam chuckled. "Well, we do have some time right now..."
Damon tilted his head down until he was millimeters away from her lips. "I'd be a fool if I didn't take advantage of it." He whispered before kissing her.
