Mission:
Peace, or Something Like It
Location: Kazon Refugee Planet
Timeline: Prior To Departure from Typhon
***And now, the conclusion***
Erin could see exactly what Ja'afra intended to do and it involved making sure that Kaj never wrote again.
Sure enough, before she could react or utter a word of warning beyond ''Kaj-''
Ja'afra's brown hand closed around Kaj's hand, jerking his fingers backwards sharply.
''Hello Lieutenant.'' His voice almost sounded pleasant.
''Ja'afra, I swear I'll pull your lungs out through your mouth.'' Erin snarled, afraid to move in case the Kazon snapped the mans fingers altogether.
Ja'afra ignored her. ''Do you know who your arm was around?'' He asked Kaj softly, menacingly.
His teeth ground, the veins in his neck rapidly showed their circumference and his body seemed to be locked in place, but Kaj was not about to be bullied. Besides either Ja'afra's grip wasn't as good as he thought it was or he was holding back, because despite the pain it wasn't enough to shut down Kaj's wit, the scar on his back was testament to just what he could endure.
"Well, I would mfff, I would say I do but I have a feeling you'll tell me anyway, so go right ahead."
The Kazon's grip tightened a little, twisting Kaj's fingers.
''Let me make this clear, smartass. Thats my future mate. But I figure if she's whoring herself around, you probably knew that.''
Erin was about to add in a loud ''WAS'' to emphasise the clear past tense on the matter, but his last words make her reach for her knife and point it levelly at Ja'afra.
''Let him go or so help me I will plant this through your damn eyesocket.''
It wasnt even the insult- that was nothing. It was the fact that he was insulting her in front of Kaj- the last person Erin wanted to think that about her.
Ja'afra ignored her. ''So you have two seconds to tell me what you were doing with Erin.''
Kaj's head rolled to the side in an effort to take his mind off the new surge of pain. Clearly this had to be defused and the meathead trying to turn his hand into a bad form of impressionist art obviously understood only one language. Therefore Kaj decided to communicate in a fashion he would appreciate, courtesy of a little training with the Starfleet Marine Corps.
Fortunately Kazon and Human anatomy was very similiar, which made it convienent when Kaj suddenly lashed out with his foot and kicked Ja'afra in the knee. The microsecond he felt the grip on his hand loosen he grabbed Ja'afras hand and wrist with both of his and instantly turned it into a lever, using his own palms to push the hand over at the wrist as well as twisting it in a way it wasn't meant to.
Never stopping the sudden violent chain of motion Kaj pulled down on the wrist and into his body, forcing the other man off of his feet by using his own body weight and pulling down on his forearm. The second he was down Kaj was on top of him, putting his knee across the big Kazon's Jaw and pushing down with enough force to pin him in place or risk breaking his neck with any thrashing, all the while still keeping that painful wrist-lock applied.
By this point a defiant sneer was plastered over his face and a semi-manic look had crept into his eyes. Kaj didn't like bullies, and this one was learning that lesson physically. Next up was the verbal portion.
"I think an education is in order. Are you listening to me you kusip?''
Kaj gave the wrist an extra crank to drive the point home.
Ja'afra was obviously trying to hide the pain but he couldn't help choking as a knee was forcing against his jaw, hindering his airflow the slightest.
Instead of answering he stared back vehemently at Kaj, defiance evident in his pain-wracked eyes.
''You educate me? Dont try to be funny.'' The Kazon choked out, trying to loosen Kaj's grip on his arms.
''You're a human. Go ahead, break my wrist... you dont think I hav'nt been through worse?'' he closed his eyes, bracing himself for the pain.
''I know Erin, and I can tell you that she wont be happy with a human for long so enjoy it you pasty-faced flyboy.'' He dealt as much with mental cuts as he did with physical.
''Snap my wrist if you want, but eventually she's gonna get bored of you and I'll be here to gloat.'' His eyes glinted malevolently.
The chuckle that emanated from Kaj's wasn't one of mirth, and as he leaned over to softly growl into Ja'afra Kaj's weight pressed down more and more on his jaw and throat.
"Maybe she will, or maybe she won't. I don't know the future and unlike you I don't pretend to know all of the answers but what I do know is that Erin is freer, smarter, and in every way my equal and probably my better. She does not belong to me or anybody else, she may be my mate but I am hers, she is my co-pilot my...hunting partner if you will, and our bond burns more fiercely and runs deeper than anything you will able to comprehend in that empty canister you call a head.
No, I won't kill you, unfortunately there's too few of your kind left and unlike you I'm not a mindless brute. But if I ever even get a rumor of you disparaging Erin in any fashion like you just did ever again, rest assured there will be no fleet capable of preventing me from dropping a tri-cobalt round right in the middle of your ridges. I survived the Jem'hadar Breen AND Cardassians all at once, so that makes you nothing more than something smeared on my boot by comparison.
Now are you going to be civil if I let you up? Or do I have to let Erin work on her precision stabbing skills?"
Erin couldnt help but smile warmly, even if she knew Kaj was acting. It still made her feel happy.
Ja'afra gritted his teeth and stared back at Kaj, considering as his precious air ran out.
Erin flicked a knife and it embedded itself in the ground beside his arm to emphasise Kaj's point.
''He is'nt kidding. If he breaks you Im not going to back you up. I'll swear that you fell.''
Ja'afra relaxed totally, offering no resistance and trying to muster up whatever dignity he had left. It was obvious that he was not used to getting the living daylights kicked out of him over anything.
''Fine, I dont care any more.'' He said slowly, waiting for Kaj to let him up before he sat up and quickly got to his feet, striding off, holding his wrist.
Like most bullies, he was a coward in the face of defeat.
''Thanks.'' Erin held out a hand to help Kaj up. ''I'll explain everything, I promise. I owe you that much.''
She paused arkwardly, well aware that the current situation did not paint her in a good light. ''Good acting by the way. You handled it better than I would have.''
Kaj was busy for a moment re-setting a dislocated knuckle after accepting Erins hand and getting to his feet, something he had learned to do from prior experience. After a wince and the signature pop he shook his hand a few times before turning to Erin. For a moment he had a bewildered look on his face before the grin-re-appeared and he swept her up in his arms in a flourish.
"Well I AM supposed to be your mate, right?"
He asked before planting a big wet kiss on Erins lips.
"C'mon, by the smell of things they're roasting something over an open flame. Dunno about you but I'm about ready to gnaw somebodies arm off."
Erin grinned in releif and kissed him back. ''Sorry about the knuckle, I didn't think he'd go that far. Come on, you have to try this meat. Its essentially pig, but spit-roasted pig!''
Taking his hand, she pulled him over to the small crowd that had gathered around the cooking area and grabbed two wide wooden bowls, handing one to him and heaping her own with freshly cooked meat and other vegetables and sauces laid out before nabbing a bench to sit on and patting the space beside her.
''Okay, just to clear something up- anything Ja'afra said about me was based on things I said over nine years ago when the only humans I knew were armed federation forces.'' She started to explain herself.
''Secondly, he's full of bullshit. We were chosen as a compatible match by the elders as were all of the young kazons, so the race wouldn't die out... etc etc.... there was a certain time in which you could change your mind and i changed my mind in the last two weeks. It wasn't what I wanted, I wouldn't have been happy. I dont want you thinking I didnt tell you because I was hiding something, I didnt tell you because I dont consider it important any more.''
At first Kaj didn't answer, albeit not through any sense of indignation or irritation. Rather he was in the middle of the first bite of his portion, and the look on his face said it all long before he spoke.
"First off, this needs to be programmed into the replicators, or at least we need to give some of the spices and sauces to ted to work with, cause this is the best spit-roasted animal I've had in a long time."
Before he turned to look Erin in the eyes Kaj swallowed. It wouldn't do to accidentally fling a chunk of roasted animal or vegetable at her when being honest.
"Well to be honest it was off-putting at first, but I understand, so don't worry. Besides I wasn't exactly up front about the burn on my back either until pushed so even if I wanted to complain I really couldn't."
His hand found hers and intertwined fingers, and his forehead gently pressed to hers. The next bit wasn't for anybody elses' ears but her own, hence why they were delivered at a whisper.
"By the way, I wasn't fully acting back there when I told that goon about how I feel about you. In fact you might say I was barely acting most of the time."
Before Erin could respond he spied a familiar little face in his peripheral vision, and decided to check in with its owner. Pulling his face away from Erins he stuck two fingers from his free hand in his mouth and whistled in a particular direction.
"Lieutenant Fe'ere! Front and center!"
Erin felt her heart beat faster at his words and closed her eyes, smiling. There was no description for the odd content that she was feeling at that moment. It was something she had'nt felt in a while and the releif that he was'nt angry at her or offended was almost overwhelming.
It was only early days but he was the one person she didnt want to loose.
Opening her mouth to reply, she was interrupted as Fe'ere bounded over with a grin, having found the means to clip the communicator to his top.
''Heya!'' He greeted his new freind cheerfully, chewing happily on what looked like a roast leg of chicken.
''I forgot to ask you, whats a lieutenant?''
Kaj doubled over and slapped his knee while he laughed, for in addition to the brazen inquisitiveness of the kid was the truth that there was really no one-size-fits-all answer. Once again Kaj ruffled Fe'ere's hair and grinned as he tried to come up with a good answer.
"Well, a Lieutenant is a starfleet officer, what we call a junior officer. It's a unique position, you still learn new things every day but you also get to be in charge of more things too. It's fun, but its even more fun being captain, especially if you get your own ship."
Kaj leaned over and looked Fe'ere right in his little eyes.
"How would you like that Fe'ere, would you like to be the captain of your very own starship?"
The kids eyes lit up. ''And go to space!?!?!'' He demanded excitedly.
''I've always wanted to go to space! My moms from there, but she wont tell me anything about it.'' He confided with a little pout.
''Are there pigs in space?''
Erin chomped away on her food to stop her from giggling outright.
While Erin succeeded in suppressing her giggling Kaj couldn't and chuckled. Shaking his head he soldiered on.
"Well not in space per se, but there are these people called Klingons, and they take these animals called Targs with them.... tell you what, I'll let you figure that one out when you get older, some things should be discovered on your own rather than told.
Now, if you want to go into space the best way is to apply to starfleet academy when you're old enough, and you'll know when that is. Keep trying and don't give up, and I'll put in a good word for you.
In the meantime you'll get your very own starship once I get back to mine, but there are a few conditions you'll have to agree to."
Fe'ere's grin faded at the last bit and he wrinkled his nose. ''I hate conditions. Do I have to do my chores or something? Blech.''
Kaj's head nodded back and forth a bit, but it had to be said.
"Yes, because being a good starfleet officer means obeying commands and helping others, and right now your mother is your captain, so you listen to her.
No, my conditions are simple.
First, if you're going to be a captain you'll need a crew, so you put a crew together to help you run the ship. Second, since you're captain you have to lead by example, so you be the very best person that you can be and lead your crew by doing the right thing.
And last but most important, never ever ever stop asking questions or exploring. There's a lot of weird and interesting things to discover, but you have to get out there and look for them, they won't come to you.
Can you do all of that Fe'ere?"
The little boy looked up at Kaj with a mixture of awe and confusion.
''I'm only five.'' He said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world, holding up five fingers to emphasize his point.
''Well then by the time you're old enough to join starfleet, you'll have plenty of practise.'' Erin added cheerfully.
Fe'ere considered, before nodding and a huge gap-toothed grin split his face. ''All right!'' He exclaimed. ''Gotte get my crew!''
He raced off towards his freinds and soon they were huddled in a group, arguing over who got to be what on their new ship.
Erin turned to Kaj. ''Thanks to you, that five-year old out-ranks me in starfleet. Thanks.'' She teased, giving him a nudge.
Kaj sheepishly over-exaggerated the shove then leaned in and kissed Erins cheek.
"Oh don't worry, if he's a captain then his mom's an admiral, you know that."
Erin laughed. ''I'm sure Ma'ava will be pleased.'' She called over a Kazon with a jug and poured them two large glasses of an odd pink liquid that smelt of berries.
''Try it. We found theest plants in the woods here that make the best wine.''
She paused and grinned, holding out the glass. ''And before you ask this totally is'nt me trying to get you drunk or anything. Not at all.''
Raising an eyebrow and giving Erin a rather false incredulous look, Kaj swirled the liquid in the glass.
"Sure, I know this ploy, next ill be waking up tied to a bed with you standing over me holding a cat o ninetails."
Kaj smiled at Erin then took a sip of the wine, then suddenly re-directed his gaze downward into the cup like he had just been stung by the very glass itself.
"Well it's... potent. I have to say I've never tasted anything like this, sort of like a sweeter blood wine with a hint of kanar.... I like it."
Kaj smiled and gazed out upon the assembled Kazon. Here was not a beaten people far from home, here was a tribe unified and happy together. He had seen more modern places more miserable than what he was seeing at the moment.
"Your people are incredible Erin, and you're probably the best person they could have representing them in starfleet. If it's not presuming too much I'd like to help, help get things here that they could use to advance their cause in the Federation. That kid, Fe'ere, I can't help but wonder how many others like him look at the stars and wonder whats out there. So much potential..."
Erin was in the middle of knocking back her own glass of wine and ended up coughing and spluttering in surprise.
''Seriously?'' She demanded when she could talk again.
''The federation's good to us, but no-one has ever tried to help before. They all think we'll do better left as farmers and hunters. I think they're afraid that if Kazons get ships and too much power of their own, the war will restart in this quadrant.''
She took Kaj's hand again. ''Thank you. It would mean so much to the sect, and to me. How do you propose to help??''
Kaj looked up at the night sky for a moment. Truthfully he didn't have more than a general idea, but bigger movements had been started on less.
"Well education for one, I know of a few good teachers who wouldn't mind coming out here to lend their own unique brand of education to the kids here. It's a start but it may be enough. This is only my first time though, hence why I'm telling you. You know what they need, what they would be willing to do, so if you came up with a list I'd be happy to put it through proper as well as personal channels."
Kaj squeezed Erins hand then let go in order to wrap his arm around her waist, staring into the fire for a moment while basking in the glow and the sensation of its warmth and Erins warmth intermingling.
"I have to admit, I didn't know what to expect and frankly was a little intimidated. Now I'm wondering why I never bothered to come sooner.
Erin laughed. ''The only information about us is what Captain Janeway and the voyager brought back with them, and we were hardly painted as heroes. I'm not surprised you didnt come before now.''
She leaned back into his arms, staring into the fire. ''Not many people do, in fact I've met a good few people in my time who never even knew we were here.''
''You said a few minutes ago you wondered how many Kazon's look at the sky and wonder whats out there. We all do. Even the children. Space is in our blood, and you'd be doing the sect one hell of a favour if you granted even a few of them the ability to find out whats up there.''
Kaj gazed into the fire, letting his mind drift a little in that moment.
"If I ever get the chance to come back with you again, remind me to bring Lusa, she'll think she went to Karelian heaven early for good behavior.
I'll do what I can, but I can't be the only one. When we get back though I do have a project though, well one for the kids here anyway."
Erin raised her eyebrow, knocking back more of the wine.
''And whats that? Or should I guess?'' She teased curiously.
''Which reminds me- I have to meet Lusa. I like dogs, haven't seen one since my days at the academy though. My room-mate had one and all it did was dribble and eat the furniture.''
Kaj looked at Erin without the smirk, meaning he was at least semi-serious when he said
"I promised Fe'ere a starship if he put together a crew, and since I don't intend on becoming a liar anytime soon I intend on following through on that promise."
Kaj finally grinned a little and finished the rest of his wine. Setting the cup down he fully encircled Erins misection with his arms and planted a small kiss on her neck before continuing.
"And you'll meet Lusa soon, and don't worry, she's not much of a dribbler, eating furniture on the other hand, well to be fair she's still a puppy."
Kaj sighed in his own contentment. and once again his mind began to drift in that relaxation. However that also meant the small filter between his brain and his mouth also relaxed, something which lead to rambling and the ever dreaded foot-in-mouth-itus.
"You know I don't believe in fate or luck or any sort of faith..."
Erin leaned over stopping the verbal avalanche with a long, deep kiss.
''Neither do I.'' She assured him with an understanding, if not cheeky smile, her finger-tips lingering on his jawbone.
''Some things though.. I cant help but thank coincidence for.''
She looked up at the darkening sky as the murmers from the other Kazons around them rose and fell like the waves.
''I hope you dont mind, Aavik cant fly us back, seeing as he's drinking. Would you mind staying the night?'' She grinned, craned her neck back to see him.
The thought of mock resistance had crossed his mind for a fleeting moment, but the long kiss from Erin and gazing into her eyes that were practically golden by the firelight melted away any notions of that.
"Why would I want to be anywhere else other than with you in this place right now?"
Kaj smiled and kissed Erin softly, lingering and enjoying the taste of the wine mingling with her own essence before coming back up and holding her tight.
"Not that I want to be the clock-watcher but since we are staying over tonight we ought to catch the first transport back to Typhon ASAP, we ARE starfleet officers after all."
Erin nodded. ''No problem, Aavik has to head back early tomorrow morning, we'll be back before they know we're gone.'' She assured him, enjoying the breif buzz the wine was bringing and just enjoying the moment.
As if some unspoken signal was given, the majority of the people around them began getting up and clearing the food away, pushing the tables back and making room as instruments were brought out.
Erin looked from the goings-on to Kaj. ''Please tell me you know how to dance.''
Grinning then standing up, Kaj bowed slightly at the waist and held his hands out palms up for Erin to take.
"May I have this dance? I've made Anubis cruisers and Danube runabouts a like pirrouete, so it wouldn't do for me not to be able to dance as well now would it?"
Erin sit forward and grabbed his hands, pulling herself up as the music started- basic drums, string instruments and wooden pipes and whistles mingles in the air as Erin pulled Kaj into the centre around the bonfire as other people joined them.
Yet everyone seemed to hold back, watched what the human would do.
''I'll warn you, I'm not the best at dancing, so I'll follow your lead.'' Erin muttered with a sheepish grin.
Kaj was about to say something in his usual banter but then a thought occoured to him.
"Um, your info didn't exactly cover traditional Kazon dancing, so you might need to lead a little. Then again I've never known you to be shy about taking charge."
Kaj grinned devilishly, obviously that was meant in more ways than just Erins' general demeanor.
Erin's already copper skin flushed a little at the comment and she punched him in the arm, grinning a little. ''Shut up, you.''
''Wow, I really did not want to hear that.'' Ma'ava called, walking by. Erin mock-glared after her.
''Okay, really its a lot of swaying, just move in time to the music. There's no rules'' She just let herself go, moving in sync with the rhythms and pulling Kaj along with her, grinning
Kaj followed along for a bit before sweeping Erin up in his arms and taking the lead with a long swinging dip, stalling at its apex to drink in the sight of Erin's lithe body stretched out from his arms. From that moment on he completely surrendered himself to that moment in time with Erin, feeling just as free as he did the first time he got behind the controls of his first shuttle, only this time none of the stress or nervous anticipation, just sheer bliss in that moment.
A few Kazons clapped or cat-called.
Erin waited til he pulled her back up before breathlessly taking his shoulders and moving with the swirling movments of the rest of the other dancers who had joined them.
The festivities lasted long into the night, as their fallen comerade was hailed and remembered by the drinking dancing tribe.
It was a few hours past midnight when Erin took Kaj's hand and lead him over to a vacant house.
''They're letting us stay here for the night.'' Her eyes sparkled mischievously.
''Though that does'nt necessarily mean we have to sleep.''
Kaj's head cocked to the side and his mouth opened for a moment, but then suddenly closed, replaced with a sudden but oh so-gentle motion of him picking Erin up by her waist and looking into her eyes.
"Why Ms. Tal, I believe you are trying to seduce me, successfully."
Erin grinned wider, trailling her fingers down the length of his spine under the shirt.
''You think, Mr. Mikkola??''
She leaned closer til there was hardly an inch between them and whispered against his lips.
''I think you might be right.''
The surge of desire that raged through Kaj when Erins eyes were locked on his at that range, but it was a sure bet that Erin could tell the magnitude of the effect with the tensing of key muscle groups through Kaj's body, some of which she was holding onto with her own limbs.
"Well then, there's really only one way to make sure isn't there?"
Before Erin could answer Kaj succumbed and met her lips with his, communicating the intense desire in it and the way that he pressed her into him as he carried her into the small house.
Erin responded, pressing her lips against his and winding her fingers through his hair with one hand, managing to swing the door shut with the other.
After all, for what was transpiring, it probably would'nt be the best thing for her tribe to get an eyeful.
The sun rose bright and early, its rays slicing in through the small gaps in the walls, and illuminating the large hammock that Erin lay in, curled around Kaj, her head resting on his chest.
There was a sharp knock on the door and the Kazon bolted awake, sitting up and falling out of the hammock with sharp yell of surprise.
After cursing her way back to her feet, she looked frantically around for her clothes.
''Yes, who is it?''
''Aavik. We'll be leaving in half an hour.''
''Ah...yeah, thats great. See you then. Thanks Aavik.'' She ran a hand through her hair, looking frantically for her stuff.
''Kaj, is there any point in asking you where my trousers are!?'' She hissed, giving the hammock a poke.
Poking wasn't going to do the trick, Kaj was accustomed to sleeping through rough-running warp drives and in less comfortable things than the hammock, so Erin's only reward was a slight shifting in the mass of the hammock itself followed by Kaj mumbling something along the lines of
"Isonlyfriday, mugubzzzz"
Before a sigh and then the slow deep breathing of sleep once again.
Erin turned to look at the sleeping pilot and smiled, then changed tack and gave the hammock a quick shove, making it swing in a wide arc.
She could remininsce later.
''Oi! Dont make me get back in there and sit on you.'' She mock-threatened, resuming the search.
''We leave in a half an hour.''
The shove did more than just move the hammock, and the best evidence for that came when Kaj hit the floor with an uncerimonious but suitably resonating crash.
Groaning and holding his head, Kaj got to his knees and looked at Erin with a confused cast before everything processed, and even then the confusion didn't totally die down.
"Ugh, I dunno if its the wine or the trauma but my head hurts."
Getting to his feet he grabbed the nearest pair of pants and was working one of the legs on when he stopped and actually considered them for a moment, then dangled them and adopted a goofy lopsided grin.
"I think these are yours."
Erin was about to apologise for smacking him off the floor when she burst out laughing at him trying to put on her clothes.
''Thanks.'' She replied wryly, dressing quickly. ''You're not half difficult to wake up, you know that?''
''Then again.'' She added with a wicked grin, going to the water basin to wash her face.
''You have a reason to be tired.''
Kaj chuckled and started throwing his own clothing on, walking over to Erin as he did so. Leving the robe-like tunic off and resigning to just the basic shirt he leaned in and planted a kiss on the back of Erins neck as she washed her face.
"Indeed I do, you'll have to show me the secret manual you're working off of one of these days, at this rate you're gonna make me go blind with sheer..."
''You two ready?'' Aavik's impatient call sounded outside the hut.
Erin whirled around, planting a kiss on Kaj's lips and grinning.
''To be continued.'' She quipped, turning to grab her shoes. ''Yeah, we're coming!''
A few minutes and goodbyes later they arrived at the shuttle when Fe'ere came sprinting out of the trees, waving his arms wildly. ''Kaj! Kaj!''
He ran up to Kaj and shoving a leather pendant with a small carving of a bear into the mans hand.
''Its for you.'' He mumbled shyly.
Erin smiled and hopped into the shuttle, not wanting to stick around if Fe'ere was shy.
For a moment Kaj had a genuine look of shock and surprise on his face as he turned the small talisman over and over in his hands , then it gave way to a big smile and the most enthusiastic ruffling of Fe'eres hair yet.
"Why thank you kiddo, it'l make me look good. I wish I could stick around longer but Erin and I have to go, but I promised you a starship and you'll get it. Just remember what I told you and have your crew waiting when it gets here.
Now go, I doubt Aavik wants to flatten you with his maneuvering thrusters. I'll be back sometime, you can count on that."
Fe'ere nodded and grinned, turning and running back a few metres to give room for the shuttle to take off.
''I will I promise!'' He called, waving.
Kaj grinned and watched the kid go before climbing in and taking his own seat next to Erin.
"If I didn't know any better I'd say that kid has his trajectory set right towards starfleet. His momma should be proud."
He nudged Erin with his shoulder and grinned at her while idly turing the pendant over in his hand.
"Guess than makes you a proud auntie then."
Erin laughed. ''I'm not his real aunt.'' She replied, nudging him back.
''But thats only a technicality. And I am damn proud of him.''
The shuttle was soon airbourne, soaring up towards the atmosphere and back to the Calypso.
