1,063 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Peace, or Something Like It
Location: Councelling center

Erin waited til she had a free moment in her schedule before going to see Lorne Jaxara.
The captain had'nt told her much, but news certainly does spread on a starship, she the councellor knew excactly why she had been called to see the Leiutenant.
''Mr. Jaxara? Could we meet and talk?'' She requested, tapping her COMMbadge.

Jaxara sighed. "I'm in my quarters. Unfortunately, I'm not on duty, thus I can't leave. Feel free to drop by." He mumbled, half asleep, laying on his couch.

Erin made her way down to his quarters, thinking that the mumbling sleepy man on the other end of the comm-line hardly lived up to the stories of a raving rule-breaker.
However she had learned to never judge of appearance, so the councellor was more than wary when she arrived outside the quarters and knocked.
''It's me. You awake?'' She called.

Jaxara, nearly forgetting Erin was headed to his quarters, had rolled over, and almost fallen back asleep. He stood up, wearing his pajamas, and stumbled over to the door. "Uhm. No." He said, as he opened the door. "How can I help you?"

Erin took one look at his dishevelled appeareance and grinned. ''Sorry to disturb. I'm here under orders to talk to you about...''
She shrugged. ''Well im not going to patronise you, I'm sure you know what this is about.''

"Either you are here to discuss strange dreams with flying elephants, and a giant midget, or my general mental capacity." Lorne said, with a laugh. "Yeah, the Captain thinks I have lost my last screw."

''Oh yeah, the elephants are of upmost priority.'' Erin said with a laugh, stepping into the qaurters, as discussing a possible mental breakdown in the corridor was not advisable.
''So talk me through it. What happened?''
She knew already, but wanted to hear his side.

"Read the reports. I'm getting sick of repeating it." Lorne said. "Why the hell do I fill out reports, if everyone asks me to repeat it to them? It seems hopelessly redundant, and annoying."

''Oh I read the reports.'' Erin assured him. ''But I can get a good reading of your body language and emotions when you're recounting the story.''

"Well, I don't feel like talking about it." Jaxara said. "She said I had to see the counselor. She didn't say I had to talk about stuff with you."

Erin crossed her arms. ''I beleive that was the point. But if you prefer, I can get her to give the order for you to talk to me.''
''However, I'd rather it didnt come to that.''

"Well then, that's fine. I don't mind talking with you. I just don't feel like talking about 'it'." Lorne said. "It's just that simple."

Erin sighed. ''As much as I love idle chats, we need to get this matter cleared up, and the sooner the better. When you DO feel like talking about 'it', give me a call.''
She'd give him a day or two, then after that the captain would just have to be more specific about her orders.
''And as much as I hate to be the nagging crewmate, you wont be absolved of this mess untill you work through this. I dont mind if you dont want to talk about it now, but it will be adressed soon.''

Lorne shrugged. "Nothing to talk about. It's all in the reports. It was nice to see a lovely face, but otherwise, I doubt this is being productive from either point of view."

Erin shook her head. "The reports are impersonal. My job is to get inside your mind, find out why it happened and make sure it doesnt happen again."
'The fact that it isnt productive is whats worrying. You're not helping your case by refusing to be helped.'

Lorne shrugged. "You aren't especially doing a good job of encouraging me to do so."

''Should I have to?'' Erin shrugged back.
''I'm not going to argue you into talking to me. At the end of the day you dont have much of a choice if you want a clean bill of health, so theres no need for me to use my debating skills.''
Erin looked at her hands for a few seconds, considering.
''I'll inform the captain, and I'll call back in a few days. Hopefully you'll feel like talking then.''

Jaxara shook his head. "Not about this. There's nothing to talk about."

Erin thought furiously for a moment before changing tack.
''Okay, if you dont want to talk about it: fine. But you have to understand, people are scared. I dont care if they were blanks- its unnacceptable behaviour on a starship, and you know that, otherwise you wouldnt have checked yourself into the brig.''
She gave him a pointed look.
''So I have an idea, and it involves certain holodeck activities to be taken a few times a week that will help you deal with anger manegment. I wont force you to talk about it but I will insist you work on your temper. Fair enough?''

"Fair enough." Lorne said, and sighed.

Erin looked at him sympathethically. ''I know, its tedious. Trust me, I'd rather not be here annoying you about this, but its my job.''
She produced a pen and wrote down a few programme names and handed them to Lorne.
''Theese are some programes- theres some meditation, combat lessons, lectures on anger manegment... choose what one suits you best and let me know how your doing in a week. I'll want to check on progress.''

Jaxara nodded. "Sounds great. Something to do. This place is getting boring now."

''I'd say so.'' Erin nodded. ''Most of the programmes are pretty fun.''
''I'll see you in a week, then.'' She tipped her fingers off of her forehead in a small salute by way of 'goodbye' before letting herself out.

Jaxara shook his head, and laid back down on the couch, pondering how a counselor could be so insistent to talk about an event, and not want to talk about the underlying issues surrounding the event.

He yawned, and fell asleep.
